I think the Minutemen have had their teeth pulled a little to much to put emphasis on the whole "rebuilding the wasteland game-play" of Settlement building.
Think about it - if you actually do go whole-hog into Settlements you can ACTIVELY SEE the wasteland becoming a better place.
Supply lines linking Settlements with food, water and protection and a united group ready to not just help each other but look out for the general good of other Commonwealth citizens seems pretty good to me.
The Brotherhood and Institute have a lot in common in FO4 in my opinion.
Both have all of this technology and resources at their disposal but they appear to do nothing more than use it to further their own ends and take big steaming dumps on anyone who has what they want / may get in their way.
The Minutemen don't even take the fight to the Institute until it becomes clear that there's no way to make the Commonwealth safe while they're there.

A melee build is perfectly viable if you do it one of two ways:
Stealth with Blitz, Ninja and Sneak. Blacksmith and Armorer are highly recommended. Early Stealth sort of sucks, but it gets much much better with level 1 Armorer, Leather Armor modded for Light Weight and Shadowed. If you multi-target with VATS, you will crit on each and every enemy assuming you are not spotted before turning on VATS. Stealth is iffy until level 24, Blitz is mediocre until the second rank. The other way is..
The tank. High STR, enough for Rooted. high END however much you want, I like Adamant Skeleton and Cannibal. But "Strengthened" Mods in your gearx4 will result in very rarely crippled limbs. 4 PER (5 with bobblehead to unlock explosives expert) for some ranged. Armorer and Blacksmith are required. Once you get some Metal Armor all Polished/Strengthened up, its amazing since most of the game is ballistic damage. Also consider Lone Wanderer for 15/30% damage reduction without a companion (dogmeat does not penalize you), maybe Toughness perk.

One last thing to add, Armor Piercing weapon mods have little use because they are mainly for things with a Skull next to their name (way higher level than you) or power armored folks. Bleeding damage mods fall off in usefulness around level 10. Go for raw damage mods.

On most Ballistics weapons this is usually Recon Scopes and not much more than that.
If you're going 100% pure ballistics then it's not needed, but if you're ever going to use laser weaponry, gauss rifle etc, then it's worth picking up.

Honestly it could be made a bit more clear via the Minutemen path that you're default position is just live and let live with everyone else since via every other faction you have to destroy the other two 'warring' factions.

Playing through the Institute endgame right now. So far I'm enjoying it more than the BoS endgame, mainly because it actually offers a smattering of actual roleplaying in this sorry excuse for an RPG. The BoS ending was just killing shit, but at least with the Institute I got to decide what I was going to say in the radio broadcast, and it seems I can use the Railroad as pawns to help me destroy the BoS.
Quick question though: where on earth is NS-1488, that Blade lookalike mofo? I can't find him anywhere in the institute.

Institute srb would want the railroad as an asset in managing synths and if the institute ever came around to freeing sentient ones the railroad has methods and infrastructure in place for doing.
Nobody would destroy the institute because the molecular relay is the most powerful device in the world. Just teleport armed mini nukes to people's bedrooms or coursers to defend your allies in danger. Destroying the institute destroys the best technology in the world and is a losing scenario for any faction.

I've only done a handful quests but that's at least the 3rd occasion when something is shoved down my throat that my char would literally never do. Sometimes I feel I should just press X, came back two days from then and be happy that the game played through itself for me.
