Some people say that equipping their first artifact brought their Light level down, as if the artifact slot had not been part of the LL equation before that, and I personally saw my LL go up when I equipped my first artifact BUT there is one caveat to my example: I was a Warlock and even though I had technically never had an artifact equipped, I had held Titan artifacts in my inventory for temporary storage, so that might have "activated" my artifact slot regardless.
