Let me elaborate on this. I'm more than ok with some levity in the series (Because if you take it too seriously, you get hte Dark Ages and 06), but recent games have gone too far in the other direction and have been pure comedies with no attempts at serious storytelling or even being exciting. It's just Sonic, Tails, and Eggman standing around cracking shitty jokes and having Sonic do everything while everyone else acts as cheerleaders. This wouldn't bother me so much if every game after 06 and before Colors did a decent to good job at telling an interesting story that still felt like it fit in a Sonic game (The storybook games are underrated, and people give the stories shit because "Sonic in the Arabian Nights/Arthurian Legend? That's jumping the shark" without actually giving them a chance.

Honestly, it's good to read them, because more than any other thing Penders wrote, including M25YL, the Knuckles comics showcase every single terrible aspect of Penders' writing. However, start with the Knuckles miniseries first, as it introduces some key aspects of the Knuckles series itself

No. Ian's the only writer to actually use him in an interesting way. And yes, it does come down to execution (A good portion of the ideas introduced could very well work and still fit in the Sonic universe, but Penders blew it. I'm seriously thinking about trying to fully rewrite the Knuckles series, but I have neither the time nor talent to do so)

Honestly, my biggest problem with those games wasn't even the gameplay style, it was the fucking controls. I'd kill for a new storybook game with a similar, albeit tweaked gameplay style. Also if you liked Secret Rings, you'll love Black Knight. It even has a better soundtrack, which is still one of the most underrated in the series

Or even better, have them face more shit about the fact that the Guardian of Angel Island is dating an ex-member of the Dark Legion AKA the #1 enemy of Echidnaopolis.
Or have the Brotherhood realize that they can't stay so isolated, especially since they're now interacting with the rest of Mobius at large and during a period of extreme change, and maybe have Knuckles realize that the roles and responsibilities as Guardian will be bigger and more important than ever. Or having the Brotherhood and echidna society be portrayed in a more morally ambiguous light (Because what they did to the Dark Legion and Dingoes was really fucked up) Or even better, have Knuckles lose a lot of trust and faith in Locke for lying to him, abandoning him, spying on him,and experimenting on him. Have Locke realize that his actions have consequences and actually try to fix his broken relationship with his son. Or you can even show Locke as being so emotionally distant that their relationship is permanently broken

Generations was advertising just before Simpsons came on for a solid two months before Christmas in '11, and you see shirts and kids playing the old games on their phones and the like. CN's watched a lot and Boom's doing pretty well last I heard, or at least by kids who aren't jaded 20+ year olds who want reboots of Ed, Edd and Eddy until the word stale has no meaning.

Pretty much, yeah. Story is still dragged down by too much exposition and a needless tie-in to StH 58, but Knuckles and Athair had the chemistry Locke/the Brotherhood SHOULD have had with Knuckles ("We have our own fates, Knuckles, and while I'll guide you I need you to learn to solve things on your own"). Also, it's the first (and ONLY) arc where Knuckles' actions carry weight and affect the outcome of the story.

Without Eggman or his defacto second-in-command Lien-da (stuffed into Thrash's bag with the rest of the echidnas), the Dark Egg Legion effectively collapses into a multitude of splinter factions. With G.U.N. no longer around, the human population is swiftly conquered by Regina, who uses her new power base to eventually become the world's #1 threat. New Mobotropolis is still around, and with Naugus and Max both gone the throne ends up back in the hands of Elias, but without Nicole there's no way to regulate the nanites, meaning the city is slowly crumbling as normal wear-and-tear is unable to be easily fixed. The biggest immediate threat is Mogul, who suddenly finds his Chaos Emerald missing and inquires as to what the hell is going on. Behind the scenes are Scourge and Finitivus, both looking to take advantage of the chaos for their own ends, as well as the multiverse, which is able to recover thanks to the disappearance of Nega.
If anyone has Spotify, Sega just added 30 Sonic soundtracks to it, according to the Sonic Twitter.

As far as Regina is concerned, I think what we'd see is an uneasy stalemate where Regina can only hold on to what's around her. Her forces can't take Northamer on their own without her help, but if she goes to curbstomp the Mobians then that lets the humans in Eurish revolt. Her eventual defeat would likely be to a combination of Knothole, Mercian and Soumercan forces all using "primitive" tech, striking at her command center with just enough strength to disrupt her control and overthrow her.

Not even gonna front.. I was hesitant to watch Sonic Boom after checking out the Game Grumps playthrough of the glitchy as fork new game. Knuckles losing his traditional gloves and the white bandages all over everyone threw me way off. The last time I ever entertained the notion of getting into the Sonic series was SA2 and up to Sallys wedding to Patch in the comics.
But whoa. The television series is actually a pretty pleasant watch. Every episode gets at least one Chuckle out of me, and Sonics personality is so ace. His VA doesn't really convey the traditional tone of Sonics voice, but I can forgive him because I think he delivers the dialog well.
Also Amy? Major upgrade from her SA2 days. I'd totally rock her on the daily if I was the blue blurr.

It's pretty middle of the road. Critics exaggerated the faults because that's what you do with Sonic games, and there are probably plenty of people on Steam ignoring any faults. I thought it was okay. Got a decent amount of fun out of it, but I also don't really have much desire to replay it.
Also, at release the game didn't give you an extra life for 100 rings, and that's just inexcusable.
