It is possible, you can't get hit once, the robot can't be awakened and get hit once, your companion can't get hit once, you get counted as getting bit if you kill them mid bite animation, even if the bite doesn't happen, and if blood spatters on you or a companion you also get the disease.
So it's pretty difficult to pull it off.
