I've noticed a reasonable number of newer players as well as some returning ones showing up in the past couple of weeks. With Christmas about a month away, there'll be even more new players.
I was going to make a couple of images that show, for a variety of common weapons, a set of suggested pieces of gear with their onbrand rolls -> suggested abilities. This acts as a cookie cutter guide for new players, allowing them to easily put together a reasonable ability build. My concern about this is that it would inhibit their willingness to come up with their own builds and that sort of thing, as well as people inevitably disagreeing with it.
I know there is already that large suggested ability guide, but I think a significant portion of it is wrong, and there's also 0 justification for why a certain ability is good for a certain weapon, e.g Bomb Sniffer .96 Deco.

I bought the game a week agoand can't get higher than C+so I would appreciate a basic info dump and can think of some points to address for new players.
Just basic stuff like:

Not so much ability/gear loadouts but more general information in the one image so people can see what sort of thing they can use a starting point for their gear.

Quick Respawn, Run Speed, and Swim Speed will always be useful if you don't know what else to use.
Splatlings are like a slightly worse charger that can be more offensive at closer ranges. Like most other weapons, you just abuse the range advantage you have over other weapons or retreat and flank if they outrange you.

No I'm not. Defense Up is mediocre.
Honestly, I've done a lot of trial and experimentation with all of the abilities, I make customized loadouts for every weapon that I use, and IMO, Defense Up is shit.
People seem to think that they're magically going to survive everything like a tank when they stack a bunch of Defense Ups, when it only really helps with a few weapons, and marginally so in those cases. Sure, you might survive a Blaster's air-burst if you're in the edge of the explosion both times it hits, you might survive a partial charge from an E-Litre (You only need around one main to do this though), and you might possibly survive a Roller's flick when you're 3 lines away and already damaged.
What it won't help with is shooters; the Tentatek has such a fast fire rate that the difference between 3 and 4 shots to kill is a tenth of a second. If they get a clear shot, they're going to kill you every time. It might help with the 52 Gal, but they run Damage Ups most of the time.
The main reason that it sucks is opportunity cost. You have to run 3 mains' worth or more to get the best results, and you can't use other abilities if you do that. All of the other abilities are just so much more useful that you end up gimping yourself just so you can maybe possibly survive some incidental damage or a charger shot.
Even worse, I see people using Defense Up without Ink Resistance.
Just use Swim Speed and/or Run Speed instead. Higher agility lets you swim away quickly, move around faster and be harder to hit, etc.

You could run at least one bomb range up main to be able to take advantage of your max range more. Ink Recovery is good too. I personally always run a combination of at least 1 Ink saver sub and 1 or 2 ink saver mains (depending on the map) whenever I use the dual squelcher. Before you dismiss as Ink saver sub as being totally useless like everyone else does, you should realize that it pairs really well with ink saver main when you switch between using your sub and main weapon. Try to think of these abilities as making your ink tank larger rather than making your sub/main weapons more efficient.
1 ink saver sub main reduces the ink usage of your sub weapon by 8%. Which means your tank has an extra 8% of ink left immediately after using your sub, and that your sub weapon costs 8% less ink to use. Having more ink left in your tank obviously makes having Ink saver main more worthwhile than if you weren't running Ink saver sub. Basically Ink saver sub when combined with ink saver main allows you to stay in a fight and keep shooting a little bit longer right after using your sub weapon, like a splash wall or a splat bomb like with the DS. You can go without using Ink saver sub just fine but it does benefit you if you like using your sub a lot in between shooting.
And Ink Recovery is just as efficient as Ink saver main actually. But an advantage that Ink saver main has is that no matter how much ink you have left, you'll have more use out of your main weapon before you run out of ink if that makes any sense.
Ultimately depends on your play style on how you use your weapon to know which abilities will help you maximize your ink efficiency.
