So, playing my very first grand strategy game other than once dicking about in game of thrones mod for crusader kings 2, and it's Hearts of Iron 3. Played tutorials, skimmed - yes I know - manual and quick start guide, and played a game as Brazil to have an easy time learning the game. My only real issue currently is that it seems to take forever to get anything done - as in, to produce a unit, to build new industrial capacity, etc - and I'm not sure if I'm just doing it wrong or if this is normal.
Also consistently overwhelmed by research options but I suspect that never really goes away.

I started by keeping my massive underfunded army and just putting maintenance to zero. After building 4 transports I put back maintenance and annexed Oyo. I built 3-4 more regiments from Oyo and shipped them back over to Greece and started research into military techs. I got extremely lucky a couple years later after the Oriental Crisis when every GP broke their alliance with the ottomemes and they had no brigades. I immediately declared war and broke up my army into 3 stacks and made a defensive line around Thessalia. Fucking Moldovia and Wallachia still have 21k to my 30k and were able to do a lot of damage before their armies finally broke. Finally the ottomemes mobilized and threw thousands of unwashed slavs/turks at my forces, but I baited them into crossing rivers and hills and had 2 techs over them. Eventually I only had 5k and they had no brigades, so I was able to take Thessalia, South Macedonia, Albania, and Cyprus. After this I built up my army even more, prestige whored to GP, and kept a 3 military tech lead of the Turks. After the Senussi revolt they broke all their alliances again, so I attacked and took back my cores+Rumelia and went Megali idea. After Berlin conference I declared war again for Megali cores and some Anatolian lands, which was pretty easy. The only roadblock came when Japan of all fucking countries sphered them and intervened when I tried to take Trabzon and Adana, The war was much longer but after that the only territory without another core the ottomans had was Ankara. I waited until 1916, dismantled them, then conquered them later. I also should mention I I blobbed in Nigeria and annexed Egypt, Madagascar, and Hawaii during all this.I normally wouldn't blob but I had severe manpower shortages from the genocides.

Trying to industrialize as Egypt and holy shit there's nothing here at all. No coal and only one iron in a 30k pop province in fucking Lebanon. Tons of cotton but not a single dye to make fabric and clothing, which would be alright if I could wait until 1870 and get a synthetic dye factory but then that requires coal too. Egypt has some of the largest cotton RGOs in the game. Try to focus on Cairo and Alexandria and build fabric, dye, clothes, and luxury clothes factories there. Build liquor factories in the Levant since there's grain everywhere.
Expanding outside of Arabic territory is up to you. There isn't any real way to solve your coal/iron problem otherwise. Sphering Persia like you mentioned is a good start, they have some decent coal provinces.

Defensive, build a fort in every border province between you and them.
Whenever war comes, burn all those and wait for them to deplete.

Don't do it, AI suffers less attrition than you and 1% is not much at all.
Take Quantity for 50% more force limit, 80% more manpower and cheaper troops. It fit your colonial trade empire fairly well.

It's got the fort defense modifier. If you stack forts on the border provinces you can attrition them out.
Quantity also has the garrison size bonus which will help with this tactic as well.

If you're a colonizing power, don't worry about culture/humanism. You'll be spreading thin all around the world and colonies will get your main culture, so it's very rare to get more as accepted. I did it with England but only because I annexed France. France, Portugal, Castille and Italy don't need that.
Religious is OP as fuck, if only for the first idea (the CB). Once you get imperialism/nationalism, it's useless though.
