The charged shot is a game changer when it comes to hordes. Let a good blob of slave rats (or clan rats if you have exotics) build up and fart fire all over them. Instant breathing space. Also, don't be afraid to overheat; it only hurts you if you don't let it cool naturally. Three or four shotgun blasts will leave a horde in shambles.

I'd say drakefires, if only because they're not dependent on ammo pickups, and can clear groups with its alt-fire. They're stupidly innacurate, but they also stumble whatever they hit, aside from the Ogre, meaning you can keep Stormvermin and assassins away with minimal effort (if you can hit them).

Drakefires or Raker? The Drakefires have 6.5% chance on hit to recover 5.0 health.
I've seen the Raker do some serious damage at pretty long ranges to clanrats and slaves. I'm guessing its effectiveness on specials isn't that great but it has some surprising accuracy. It can't do shit all to Stormvermin though.
Maybe I'm just tired of using the Drakefires for so long. What do you guys think? The raker can still clear hordes somewhat, but maybe not as well.
Also, I don't care what you guys think, the hammer and shield charge attack is definitely fucking slower than the axe and shield. I was so anxious to get my hands on the hammer and shield and now that I see just how slow it is, it's quite disappointing. The ingame stat pages lie, if you try hammer and shield and axe in shield in inn back to back, you'll see a pretty substantial difference.
Saltzpyre and Sienna make such a cute couple it isn't even funny.

I personally have been using a grudge raker with +100% mag capacity and 5% chance of 10% HP, it serves me really well even with a relatively limited ammo pool since one shot can cut through tons of trash rats easily, i've killed four of them with single shells easy. The range is a bit surprising on it, you can kill one or two trash rats from a few meters with it pretty easy, but I usually save my shells for when they're funneled and easy to mow down.
As for it's melee attack, it takes three hits to kill a rat on nightmare and four on catacylsm, but does knock them over. However if you shoot and try to gun butt immediately there's a delay between shooting and meleeing that really makes it feel clunky.
You're right, it does shit all against storm vermin. Only with a strength potion was I able to mow them down, and even then they were already damaged by a bomb or two. You'll be limited on your rakers by ammo but it's immensely satisfying to use and rips through specials and the ogre at close range, especially assassins who will do a dodging animation when hit so you can close and deliver a killing shot with it. Globadiers get wrecked by it as well.

As much as this general likes to say otherwise almost every weapon is viable, as Vermintide is a co-op hoard game. No matter which weapon you take, as long as you aren't completely shit at the game, you'll wreck the tides of vermin. You really don't need to limit yourself to one weapon just because it is the "best" at killing brainless ai rodents.
Just experiment and try shit out. The worst that can happen is that whatever gear you chose is shit, and you lose a couple of runs, then switch back to whatever it was that you were using before.

2h axe is more lethal but cleaves less targets, has a bit less range, and its swing arc isn't as wide or predictable. Also it tends to stop after only a few targets hampering your ability to deal with larger crowds.

handgun delivers higher damage and higher hitscan accuracy than the crossbow, so it is god tier for sniping specials. It one-hits assassins, ratling guns, globadiers, and packmasters anywhere. On the down side it doesn't penetrate any enemies at all, so it's only good for sniping specials.
The crossbow can penetrate about three or four rats before the bolt is stopped, and can kill most specials with a well placed headshot. Crossbow can be used to help thin out hordes to a greater effect that the handgun can, and has a bit faster refire rate as well.
If you want to be able to hurt hordes from a distance and have good aim, take the crossbow since the penetration comes in handy during hordes to hit specials that are hiding behind trash rats, especially packmasters. If you just want to wreck anything with one shot from any distance, albeit slowly, use a handgun.

Hats are cosmetic, all other gear has actual stat increases from one tier to the next. They aren't THAT drastic of upgrades; you can still do Nightmare or Cata well enough with a white weapon, oranges just make it easier and help close the gap between average players and good players.
Really though, once you start playing the hardest difficulty, 100% of the challenge is avoiding being hit since a single trash rat will rip off 30% of your health, and there's no armor or anything that will help you with that shit.

If you ask me Nightmare is the ideal difficulty. Hard enough that you can't just brain-dead your way through but not so hard that you require a stroke of luck with the Director not fucking you in the anus as soon as it can.
Cata can be unplayable if you're trying to connect with someone on the other side of the states or something, too, since rats will hit you from like 10 feet away as soon as the connection hiccups. I'm glad it's there, though; I like the idea of there being something to strive towards. I'd be done with the game by now if Nightmare was the upper limit.

I only gathered a small sample size but it didn't seem to be working out all that well with the type of pubs I'd get and my complete lack of any exos. Hard mode is an easy completion every time. Guess I should try more nightmare runs for it.

Not very. People are pretty understanding about FF unless you're an elf or you do it like literally every 30 seconds. It doesn't do hardly any damage unless you're using a hagbane bow, anyway, the worst thing about it is the little damage blip that makes you think a rat is fucking you up from behind.

Consider that a perfect run in Hard mode, 2g3t2d, will give you a ~7% chance of getting an exo.
Now consider that same run on Nightmare gives you a 30-60% chance of getting an exo, depending on how many of them show up in the table.

I just started playing BW, and I'm feeling conflicted. I love to spam conflag like crazy, and the difference between swarms from this to other classes is like night and day; even the hairiest fucking swarms with loads of specials goes smooth as butter, but I always have fucking ABYSMAL damage at the end of the run.
Is that just a thing with conflag BW, or have I just had a long string of really great teammates that have been carrying my useless ass

The thing with hammer and shield is that you should be using normal attack instead of charged.
I personally use normal attacks and shield pushes and never resort to shield bashes with it. The hammer alone sends rats flying and doesn't get stuck like an edged weapon.
Axe and shield is funny. You will definitely play it just as a Kruber would and it doesn't axe strike doesn't have the aoe the hammer has.
I haven't gotten a single fucking worth mace and shield so I've no idea about that piece of equipment.
