Very simply: Vats would freeze time so you could highlight the parts of the enemy you want to hit (head for quickest kill, weapon arm to disarm them). It was the most efficient way to dispatch an enemy so helped save ammo in a world where you cant craft ammo so have to scavenge or buy everything.
Now it just slightly slows down time, so whilst you're in VATS an enemy can move behind cover or wose run right up to you and start attacking.

Just find some hobby that depends on other people. Use meetup or such to find groups and go hicking, or whatever. Even volunteer work, for crying out loud. I actually met my girlfriend while serving in a soup-kitchen for homeless people and she's the sweetest person I've ever met. It means that Diamond City is marked on your map, so you can fast travel to it.
It's only useless if you know where Diamond City is or have discovered it already.
On the average playthrough you learn about Diamond City through the Minutemen, finding that early enough allows you to bypass that.

Radiation lowers your maximum health
Poison is DoTs
All damage is lowered relative to your armor class of that respective damage type. Hazmat suit for example stops basically all radiation, but doesn't protect you from bullets at all.

Yeah, I'm not actively looking for them. I haven't even touched most of the southern and eastern parts of the map. I just randomly passed two armors while exploring, the one mentioned and one west of Forest Marsh Grove right in the middle of the road. I was out on some simple raider cleanup missions for my settlements and figured I might as well grab the two armors while out.

It's a half-submerged town. So naturally I was expecting Mirelurks everywhere.Instead I got ghoul after ghoul slowly rising up out of the fucking water and lunging at me from all sides.And I did it at night in a thunderstorm. Shit was awesome.

I've just talked to Preston and he's talking about moving to some castle or something. Problem is that I have hardly touched Sanctuary outside of the basic set up shop quest, and there are no other settlers outside of Garvey's group, which I imagine will move to the Castle.

There are no enemies that are hard to hit. All the humanoid enemies that run around eventually take cover and you can pop their heads off all day. Four legged stuff just charges at you, only a spazz can't hit something bolting to you in a straight line. And floating stuff is both shit and stops now and then to fire at you. Then you shoot.

True. Interiors are pretty damn underwhelming. They're too bright (white fog doesn't help with that either) and the lack of shadows hits you like a brick.
