A general for all the realistic wargames out there that don't generate enough traffic to sustain their own generals.

Combined arms *is* a wargame, just a terrible one.
>>
>>122283905

Oh, I forgot the other one.

Artillery.

Massed artillery.

Pretty much every fun wargame I've ever played that covers modern-ish warfare tends to downplay the sheer destructive force of MLRS. In reality even a BM-21 barrage using cookie-cutter HE warheads will give tank columns a big headache. Look up combat footage from Ukraine if you have any doubt, you'll see wrecks of whole Ukie armored companies still in formation that were wasted by Grads.

Bring Spetsnaz in BTR-D
Switch Motostrelki in MT-LBV for something else, because Motostrelki suck. Options are Morskaya'90, some infantry in helis, or something else.
>support
Remove Pion, add Msta.
Remove either Shilka or OSA, add Strela (the better one). Maybe switch the second one for Buk (better one).
I'd take regular Nonas, but that's your call.
>tank
T-72 sucks, I prefer 72A as my span tank. You already have T-80, so you can take both or get something heavier.
I like T-80U better that T-72B Obr 1989, but i don't remember what exact stats arer better/worse
>recon
I'd take either the cheaper recon chopper or Ka-52
Both Razvedka and VMF in BTRs seem redundant, I'd take VMF in helis (Ka-whatever). BRM-1K wasn't that useful to me, I'd take something else. BRDM-2, T-55, GRU are all good options.
>vehicle
I'd switch Norov for napalm tank
>helo
decent, but since it doesn't look like you'll be doing any helo rushes and you have decent AA, so I'd take Mi-24P instead.

Point blank shots with Chinese BM-24 works wonders. 2 of them cost less than burrito but about as good.

Burrito is 1/card, BM-24 is 8 per in Chinese national. If you have the points, a 4 stack basically removes all infantry and light vehicles from the area.

The majority of towns are small enough that you can leverage fire support and/or go around. For those that aren't, you can still occupy the outermost layer yourself and make it semi-safe for your vehicles to go around without being sniped by ATGM or spotted continuously.

True from a certain point of view. Britain and France declared war on Germany, in response to German aggression against the Poles.

Could have stayed a localized conflict between Germany and Poland (and USSR and Poland), later turning into Germany vs USSR.

I wish I could post the full AAR right now. But each entry is like writing a book page.
It'll be a handful of days.

You just target ground where a superheavy or AA piece is and hope the enemy doesn't notice the missile while it is flying.
>>
>>122341395
What's so good about it then?
>>
>>122342415
the ATACMS is useless against anyone who isn't retarded.

203mm artillery will be 5x more useful in its capabilities, and can do the job of the ATACMS 95% of the time anyway

ATACMS is a shit. The only people who complain about it are slavaboos who can't micro their meme units properly.
>>
>>122342651
Oh. Well that's that then. Everyone talks about it like it's the darling angel of the US artillery so I thought there was something I was missing.
>>
>>122342859
ATACMS will usually get kills and when it does they will be very juicy ones. Even against good players it is guaranteed to make its cost back, but its hard to get much of an advantage with it and it is frustrating to use because it depends more on the opponent than you.

Yes its a unit that is 100% countered by perfect micro; luckily, no player has perfect micro.
>>
>>122334364

Paladin is the worst "advanced" artillery by a ton, I think it's even worse than MSTA.

Paladin shoots a 5 round burst in 40 seconds, which is fucking awful. If your opponent is on the ball, he can counterbattery a Paladin on a "shoot-shift-fast move" command, since 40 seconds is enough for Smerch to aim, fire, and have the rockets arrive. Even worse, the 10 second delay between rounds is enough for trained units (like all support tab units) to recover from a stun and move out of the danger zone.

Just for comparison.

MSTA-S 5 rounds in 35 seconds, 7.5 sec/shot

CAESAR 6 rounds in 30 seconds, 5s/shot

AS-90 3 shots in 6 seconds, 2s/shot

Ondava 10 rounds in 75 seconds, 7.5s/shot . Ondava is another arty that isn't perfectly save with a queued move-fast.

Just for shits and giggles

Bkan-1C 14 rounds in 42 seconds, 3s/round.

So yeah, a single CAESAR/AS-90/Bkan shits as many/more rounds than 2 Paladins.

Paladin should be 110 points, MSTA/Ondava 120, and all the Euroshit arty 150-160 points. Bkan should be 1 card of 1 just like ATACMS/Smerch.

>playing with labels
>not reading the manual
With an enemy locked (gun mode locks targets infront of you automatically), the gun reticule (spiky circle) will adjust for your targets speed, so position its center point (your red dot) on top of the target and you should hit unless he manouvers immediately

I'd also drop the Centurion Marksman and get a card of that HUMMV with the stinger's on the back, I forget what it's called. They're some of the fastest AA units in the game, and that means they have the potential to intercept a rush.

Might be just me, but I think SEALS are a dated unit.

They were fantastic when they were 25 points, but at 35 points they feel out of their league. 35 point Infantry tab SF don't lose to SEALS by much, but have twice as many per card. Even Spetz GRU don't really lose to SEALS, and they get amazing AT launchers.

Seals were just right at 25 points, at 35 they are horribly overpriced.

I would just grab another card of Rangers.

Peturbator. I like the 80's style synth with the noir sort of themes. Kinda fits the whole 'apocalyptic war' setting, like something straight out of terminator. In fact, my favorite song of theirs spoofs the movie. Sometimes I'll hop on ArmA with this playing, turn the clock to dusk with heavy overcast for the whole twilight lighting that was so generic in these sort of apocalyptic war settings in 80's movies, and just spawn a bunch of US and Russian units to go at it.

20 pts:
- good recon
- medium stealth
- 1925 **KE** 11AP 40% gun
- small
- amphibious

Very decent for general recon and support. And 40% accuracy is pretty good by PACT standarts.

You don't have much choice when you play NK. BRDM-2 is not bad too but 10% kpvt is only good vs. 0-2 armor

you can simulate ww1 so well if you have a backyard. Go get a shovel, dig a hole and try to get an app that wakes you up at random times. If you can also have someone hit you in the head every once in a while to simulate shelling then you're good to go. Now go sit in that hole for a few years.

>On August, 6th of 1915 the 3rd Assault of Osowiec began. At 4 am, the artillery barrage began and the German forces also started using poison gases against the Russian troops. After some time, thinking that none of the defenders have survived, the Germans started advancing. You can probably imagine their amazement when they saw Russia troops making their way out of the dark-green fog came out the Russian soldiers. They looked horrifying: maimed by the burns, covering their faces with rags, coughing up blood… But they didn’t surrender and were actually counter attacking. The surprise of the attack and their terrifying appearance put Germans in the state of shock and they retreated. About 60 Russian men repelled the offensive of three German infantry regiments. This was later called by European papers - "The attack of the dead men".

Dr. Strangelove, it was supposed to be a comedy when it released. But after the cold war ended and we learned more about our nuclear programs, it ended up being more realistic than people might have intended. The movie is full of symbolism and also is quite funny.

The western front was actually mostly maneuver warfare until the conflict bogged down by the winter of 1914. If you take a look at the battle of Ypres and the race to the sea, it's mostly about both Allied and Entate sides continuously trying to outflank the other in a fairly mobile conflict which resulted in extremely high casualties.

>>
>>122405409

Oh man, you want to talk about depressing?

Famous sci-fi author HG Wells was big into tabletop wargaming, he even wrote a rulebook of sorts called Little Wars.

Here's the closing section of the book

> And if I might for a moment trumpet! How much better is this amiable miniature than the Real Thing! Here is a homeopathic remedy for the imaginative strategist. Here is the premeditation, the thrill, the strain of accumulating victory or disaster—and no smashed nor sanguinary bodies, no shattered fine buildings nor devastated country sides, no petty cruelties, none of that awful universal boredom and embitterment, that tiresome delay or stoppage or embarrassment of every gracious, bold, sweet, and charming thing, that we who are old enough to remember a real modern war know to be the reality of belligerence. This world is for ample living; we want security and freedom; all of us in every country, except a few dull-witted, energetic bores, want to see the manhood of the world at something better than apeing the little lead toys our children buy in boxes. We want fine things made for mankind—splendid cities, open ways, more knowledge and power, and more and more and more—and so I offer my game, for a particular as well as a general end; and let us put this prancing monarch and that silly scare-monger, and these excitable "patriots," and those adventurers, and all the practitioners of Welt Politik, into one vast Temple of War, with cork carpets everywhere, and plenty of little trees and little houses to knock down, and cities and fortresses, and unlimited soldiers—tons, cellars-full—and let them lead their own lives there away from us.
>>
>>122405974

>My game is just as good as their game, and saner by reason of its size. Here is War, done down to rational proportions, and yet out of the way of mankind, even as our fathers turned human sacrifices into the eating of little images and symbolic mouthfuls. For my own part, I am prepared. I have nearly five hundred men, more than a score of guns, and I twirl my moustache and hurl defiance eastward from my home in Essex across the narrow seas. Not only eastward. I would conclude this little discourse with one other disconcerting and exasperating sentence for the admirers and practitioners of Big War. I have never yet met in little battle any military gentleman, any captain, major, colonel, general, or eminent commander, who did not presently get into difficulties and confusions among even the elementary rules of the Battle. You have only to play at Little Wars three or four times to realise just what a blundering thing Great War must be.

>Great War is at present, I am convinced, not only the most expensive game in the universe, but it is a game out of all proportion. Not only are the masses of men and material and suffering and inconvenience too monstrously big for reason, but—the available heads we have for it, are too small. That, I think, is the most pacific realisation conceivable, and Little War brings you to it as nothing else but Great War can do.

The book was published in 1913

I mean, for fucks sake, the burgers bombed the living shit out of vietnam with B-52s, albeit it didn't work too well because of SAM's and MiG's and such. But ISIS has none of that. They could legit get away with razing entire cities with dumb bombs.
>>
>>122419193
Because the indiscriminate killing of civilians worked so well in Afghanistan right.
>>
>>122419193
Probably because North Vietnam was an actual country with government institutions, military bases, factories, warehouses, etc. The US also did this because they were trying to pressure Hanoi to sign the peace treaty. ISIS has none of that shit so by razing an entire city the most you'll do is kill a couple hundred fighters (along with thousands of civilians), and ISIS isn't interested in signing a peace treaty anytime soon
>>

All I'm saying is that you're making a deck of units in a videogame to honour dead French people. That's pretty pathetic, on top of that you titled it in Spanish and misspelt French.

DCS question. I've noticed that when using FLOOD mode and AIM-7s, sometimes the AIM-7s will lose guidance even if my target is smack in the middle of the reticule. Is this because of ground clutter, or what? I've also noticed it happens mainly with planes about the size of a large fighter and below, but I have had it happen when firing at a TU-95 from the side.

FLOOD mode a shit, bro.
>>
>>122446174
Apart from the fact that FLOOD is limited to a 12 degree cone and only effective at less than 10nm, you have to also take into consideration that the AIM-7 is also rather shitty.

If you really want to use sparrows, use STT in BVR mode, but in 99 cases out of 100, an AMRAAM will do the job better while giving you the freedom to go defensive or pursue other targets once it goes pitbull.

As i suspect you are the same guy with the gun question from yesterday, most of this is described well in the manual.
http://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/250300/manuals/F-15C%20DCS%20Flaming%20Cliffs%20Flight%20Manual%20EN.pdf
>>
>>122446609
Well, I was firing at targets that were about 5nm away, and they were in the middle of the reticule, which I assume means that they were well in the cone, but the missiles still went off target sometimes. I can't find the reason it happens, it all seems very random. Yeah, I read the manual, it's just that it didn't give me a reason that my AIM-7s might be missing their targets. I guess I'll just use the AMRAAM from now on, those Sparrows are irritating.
>>
>>122447128
Assuming you kept them within the cone for the entire flight, chaff and/or general shittyness of the sparrow is the likely culprit.

The only real reason to use an AIM-7 over an AIM-120 is when shooting into a furball to avoid it losing track and fusing on a friendly instead, but this happens so rarely it is hardly worth taking into consideration.
>>
>>122447603
Fucking happens all the time.
>>
>>122447906
Depends on what kind of server you are playing on, but unless it is more than 1 or 2 enemies, closing to sidewinder range is likely just as effective anyways, without sacrificing long range firepower.
>>

>>122446174
>>122447906
The AIM-7 can be decoyed quite easily by chaff and it also seems to be more susceptible to doppler notching at close range in flood modes. STT very rarely ever gets notched at close ranges so just use an auto-acquire mode and launch that way instead of flood.

The idea behind flood is generally to fire when your opponent doesn't really know you're there as they don't get a missile launch warning or a lock tone, if they can see the missile launch or are already evasive then there is no point using flood mode.
>>
>>122451002
>as they don't get a missile launch warning or a lock tone
I thought FLOOD was just beaming as much energy as possible into a narrow cone?
Didn't this use to give out launch warnings left and right wether you fired or not?
In the very least, it should be easily detected by any RWR
>>
>>122451376
In my experience people never start to maneuver if I lock and fire on them in flood mode. Maybe that's them just being retards but I don't know. I do this frequently enough though that it's not just me getting lucky and always finding idiots while doing it.

I have never had anybody attempt to maneuver when using flood, ever unless we're already engaged in a fight and they see me launch the missile.
>>
>>122451565
"The antenna is limited to a 12 degrees cone that is flooded with continuous wave (CW) energy. In Flood mode, the radar never actually locks onto the target; rather, the seeker in the missiles homes in on the target within the Flood reticule with the largest radar cross section (RCS)."

I've got to do some actual testing, but it sounds plausible i guess?
You should show up on their RWR in the very least, but since you never truely lock, they might not think much of it?

Technology has gotten incredibly efficient at plinking huge amounts of human life out of existence in a very short timespan. Apart from PR and DCS there's also BMS which does that too.

CMBS is king of showing how efficient modern tools are at murder.
>>
>>122470521
Because its a big map and the systems are well enough modeled.

IDK mang you need to play it, you get a oh shit moment at some point.

Like a smerch battery with DPICM falling on a town with enemy troops, and almost everything is obliterated.
Or an su-25 phasing a vehicle column out of existence in a second.

>>
>>122470897
I would have definitely picked RO2 because at some points it hits close to home for personal experiences, but I can see where you're coming from. At the very least, DCS shows how easy it is to become utterly detached from mass-murder when you're only viewing it through a tiny black and white screen and pressing a button from miles away.
>>
>>122471534
>I do play it, it just didn't seem anything special compared to a lot of games when it comes to making you realize how shitty real war is.

It's just the scale, of course you need to play missions that show modern armies going against each other, most of the missions in DCS are some turkey shoot fest, or ace combat coldwar edition.

Considering the history of Soviet tanks facing Western tanks directly (such as T-34s going up against Tigers and Panthers at Prokhorovka), and the similarity in the relationship between M1A1 and T-72 to the relationship between the Tiger and T-34, I'd wager that much like WWII, it would take something like a 20:1 ratio for the Russians to be successful

That question doesn't make sense. You can't compare tanks performances like cars top speeds, or best midfielder in soccer.

T-72 and M1 were designed to a meet a military doctrine need, and to fit other complementary equipments.

T-72 was designed as fast, rugged, easy to operate, and were firstly designed for exploitation (deep operations doctrine).

M1 was designed as high technology (emphasis on sensors), mobile, survivable, Soviet tanks predators.

Aaaand that's game. 9th Panzerlehrbrigade is effectively destroyed as a combat unit, with only scraps of a 2A4 battalion escaping. Fassberg Air Base is secured and (with some help form the engies) will serve frontal aviation assets, documents from both the air base and the rheinmetall factory around unterlüß are being looked at.

Scenario's slightly overbalanced in favor of the Ossies, but it doesn't help that the AI isn't very smart (until it learns your tactics through kicking it's ass enough). Better game experiences are had by literally playing against yourself in hot seat mode.

Expect a full AAR of this scenario within a week or so.

Holy shit, no one warned me of how little fuel the MiG-21bis carries. I can't even touch afterburner without this shit falling out of the sky in five minutes. You guys weren't kidding when you said it wasn't a dogfighter. There's no way this thing could survive a manuever fight, it burns all it's fuel doing any sort of aggressive manuever and if that's not bad enough, it needs a high minimum speed.
>>
>>122558908
It's not a search radar, the idea is GCI talks you onto the target. Your best bet is to spot the target visually and then use the radar for targeting lock and IFF. Fixed beam mode is your friend for locking targets up.

I don't know about the other anon, but I want to see the MiG-23MLD flyable because it was the first "modern" Russian fighter. It set the precedents in terms of HUD, radar, and BVR that all following Russians follow. Stuff like putting the radar screen on the HUD, having a radar that can actually see further than you can, having an RWR worth a damn in the SPO-15 RWR, first Russian fighter to carry the powerful R-73, and carrying a pair of BVR missiles with complimentary seekers (R-23R/T, the precursor to the R-27R/T).

It'd be a really fun plane to fly, like a more capable MiG-21, but still old, rickety, and weird.

Gotcha, I'll give that a try. Pretty new to the module and it's a real handful, but that's kind of refreshing. I don't really care for ground attack craft so it's nice to finally get something with some sky-teeth that is a bit more demanding, but the MiG-21bis goes pretty far in the other direction, it's a straight up heart attack to fly, so many things can go wrong just moving around, and actual locking and firing feels like a wonky experience. It really makes you appreciate how simple it is to do something as small as locking onto a target and releasing a weapon in more modern aircraft.

>Having to know the size of your target that is a tiny dot in the distance and manually putting it in on a dumb little wheel.
>Having to flip all these switches just to change through weapons
>No real display telling you what you have
>HUD is a finnicky joke with a total lack of any useful information, may as well not exist 90% of the time

>>122567391
Don't worry about the target size dial, I just set it to 13 and leave it there. You're better off aiming guns with the fixed net anyway. As for HUD, it doesn't even have one!

The MiG-21 is all about going fast. It's why I love it so much.

As long as you keep your speed up (>700), and you're flying without the drop tank, the MiG-21 is actually surprisingly agile with the emergency afterburner engaged. Not that it's a huge accomplishment, but it can easily out-turn and dogfight F-15s if you stay fast.

MiG-21 can also accelerate so quickly without the drop tank and on emergency afterburner that if you're not careful you can flame your engine out within seconds because you'll reach the ~1300 IAS where your engine dies and needs to be air restarted. It's both amazing and silly that the MiG-21 airframe is so eager to go fast that it can so easily outpace its engine.

Oh, learn how to air restart engine. It's super easy. All you need to do is flip the air start switch up (it's near the fire extinguisher switch) and fly fast enough that the engines will spool up.

The rule of thumb with the MiG-21 is that almost every problem you might have in it can be solved by flying faster. Just don't fly so fast that you flame your engine out.
>>
>>122568175
>MiG-21 can also accelerate so quickly without the drop tank and on emergency afterburner that if you're not careful you can flame your engine out within seconds because you'll reach the ~1300 IAS where your engine dies and needs to be air restarted.

This may be what's happening to me. I thought it was stupid as fuck that I was running out of fuel so quickly. Thanks for the heads up, now that I think about it, it always seemed to be an issue during aggressive manuevering, where I obviously have my afterburner on.
>>
>>122567391
>Having to know the size of your target that is a tiny dot in the distance and manually putting it in on a dumb little wheel.
Like the other anon said, that's not really necessary and honestly I find the gunsight more trouble than it's worth when you need to use guns. I just use the fixed gunsight when I need to shoot something.

>Having to flip all these switches just to change through weapons
Honestly, the muscle memory you need to build of selecting your weapons is the most difficult part of learning and flying the MiG-21. Make sure pylons 1-4, and the IR/SAR switch are either bound to your stick, or memorize their keybinds.
>>
>>122568175
We need a mig-25, where you fly so fast you explode.
>>
>>122568778
>Make sure pylons 1-4, and the IR/SAR switch are either bound to your stick, or memorize their keybinds.

Well, I was looking for what to bind on some of my switches on the X-55, and after a few sorties, I know these are definitely going there. There is a lot you can get away with clicking on, but this is definitely not one of them.

>>122568964
Russian engineering is really something.
>>
>>122568775
>it always seemed to be an issue during aggressive manuevering, where I obviously have my afterburner on.
Don't pull negative Gs either for too long. Also don't fly upside down for too long either.
>>
>>122568775
In case you don't already know, afterburner is not the emergency afterburner.

There's a switch in front of the throttle that enables/disabled the emergency afterburner (also referred to as 2nd stage afterburner) that's basically like an afterburner for your afterburner. The MiG-21 gets dangerously fast with it on, and like I mentioned earlier you can flame your engine out in seconds because of how fast it'll accelerate in level flight or with a slight dive.

It only works when you're at low altitude, I think it's <3km but I don't remember exactly. You'll also drain fuel even quicker, but when you're in a dogfight and need that extra thrust you're not going to care.

Oh, and don't pull negative Gs. The reserve tank (which is the tank that directly feeds to the engine) is both gravity fed and tiny, so if you do any negative Gs for more than a few seconds you'll run the reserve tank dry and the engine will die.

We're going to be halfway there in a few years or whenever BST finishes F-5E.

LNS have said in the past that they'd like to do a MiG-23, especially because a lot of work could be carried over from MiG-21, but if they did it would be after their current crop of 3 planes (F-14, heavily hinted at Viggen, and rumored Corsair).

To be honest though, the F-4E & MiG-23MLD are not contemporaries. The MLD was a very late modernisation of the crappy MiG-23 line using tech from the new MiG-29A.

Hell, the F-4 production run ended before manufacture of the MLD even started.

>>
>>122621447
If you're talking about flying: just trim it out and NEVER push the stick forward too hard at ANY moment. It's really easy to get into an unrecoverable inverse stall on the SU-27.

If you're talking about combat: Learn to use both the sensors the aircraft has, the optical one is just a godsend.

Avoid BVRing with a F-15C as much as you possibly can. Doing so properly and efficiently with the SU-27 is outright impossible to achieve.

Don't fly too high. Be ready to get low at all moments, use terrain masking as much as possible and learn how to dogfight properly.
>>
>>122621447
Are you talking about just flying it or fighting in it? Those are very different questions. If you mean just flying it then I'm not sure what would make it remotely difficult. Basically what I already said in >>122621986.

Fighting in it is a whole other story, and takes a lot of knowing the F-15's strengths and how to bait them into throwing them away. In general you shouldn't engage an F-15 in straight BVR because there's little chance you'll be able to guide in your missiles while at the same time dodging incoming AMRAAMs.

Fly low, through, and around mountains. Using terrain masking you can get F-15s to come closer to you, at which point you can lock and fire on them WVR using the EOS.

>>122622879
This only works if the F-15s don't ever decide to look up. If they do and fire an AMRAAM your way, you won't have the agility at that altitude to maneuver against it. Flying super high is engaging the F-15 on its own terms, and you never want to do that. It's better than you in BVR.

Probably whenever they get multi-seat junk panned out. There's no way they aren't going to eventually make one, it's guaranteed cash cow, like the A-10C.

>>122647897
Their quirkiness and style as superpowers were still fumbling about transitioning from WW2/Korean War-style jets to aircraft with advanced electronics and weapons. Couple that with stupidely huge budgets for contractors and you got a lot of experimental equipment and aircraft that went in strange directions, like geometric wings, delta wings, etc. They were bizarre and advanced, but at the same time, not quite as 'hand of god' as modern aircraft, and thus had to really play into specialized niches, meaning a wide variety of aircraft rather than a few great general-purpose ones.

It's the perfect recipe to end up with weird shit like the F-14, MiG-23, Electric Voodoo, Eukranoplane, and more. That's why it stands out so much more than any other generation of aircraft.
>>

Welcome to putting a 2nd gen aircraft retrofitted to be feasible in 3rd worlder conflicts against shitty 3rd gen aircraft...up against arguably the best aircraft of the end of the 4th gen. You're just gonna have to get close and confirm it visually, or flick on your radar only when you've got the shot. It's not like you can BVR in the thing anyway, and it's radar can only stay on for 25 minutes anyway. Leave it off unless you've already got someone in your sights and you're in a position to defend yourself.
>>
>>122647897
You actually have to dogfight instead of throwing AIM120s and R73, AIM-9M/X at each other most of the time.

I had a friendly MiG-21 test their radar on me from behind when i was flying a MiG-29, wether they had their radar on, off or was actually locking me, it didn't show up at all.
Keep in mind this was within just a few kilometers range.

I know fishbeds show up as U (unknowns) on the F-15s RWR, but there is no way i'd trust my rwr to warn me about MiG-21s.

In any case, flying a MiG-21 in a race mixing non east-vs-west server is going to be painful.

I have a hard enough time finding PvP PERIOD. The only populated servers are free-flight training ones that have giant buffer zones for BLUFOR so they can play around with impunity. There's an IFF check switch on the filters panel. First thing's first, bind it to your joystick because that's not a button you have time to futz around with trying to click in the cockpit. It'll show you for a few seconds if the anything on your radar scope is friendly or not. In a mixed server (which is practically all of them), you need to make sure you IFF before you shoot because visual ID is unreliable when everybody is an F-15.

The worst part of checking IFF is that you can't IFF somebody you already have locked on. If you found somebody visually and they're at a weird angle that doesn't show up on your radar, you're going to have to do maneuvering and waste a lot of time trying to get them to show up on your radar so you can IFF them. Trying to IFF somebody when they're 100m in front of you is a huge pain the ass.

I'm constantly checking IFF whenever I see any new contact pops up. You need to know ASAP if a new contact shows up on your radar and is hostile.

>But that requires the radar to actually pick the target up
I'm not sure how you expect to IFF with your radar without your radar seeing something to IFF.

>And the plane I'm IFFing will just turn around and 120C my ass if it's hostile since that triggers their RWR
IFF doesn't trigger RWR any more than having your radar on does. It's not the same as locking a target. The MiG-21's radar is super shitty but it works both ways. You have to be very close for another plane's RWR to show that your radar strength is high. It gives the appearance of MiG-21's being further away than they really are.

>>122649749
>Actually while I'm at it, chuck's mig21 guide mentions that the green lamp next to the RWR blinks if the RWR ping is friendly
I've been flying the MiG-21 online since its release and I don't recall that light ever doing anything. I'll have to look into it some more. It might only blinks if you're being scanned by something Russian, which might be why I never see it light up.

How's the multiplayer in this? I might pick it up
>>
>>122681758
Multiplayer is in two forms, and they're old school: Hot Seat and PBEM

PBEM is what it is, you play out your orders phase, watch what happens until his orders phase comes up, then send the file to your opponent over an integrated email system. He watches the same events, then gives his orders, watches again, so on.

Hot Seat allows two players to play with the same copy and computer. One guy gets in the computer seat, gives his side orders, then his buddy gets in the seat, and gives his side orders, then they watch events unfold. Theoretically, you can play a game over 4chan by having the player take one side, then screencapping the other side's information and posting it in the thread, and that side would be instructed according to the posters' orders

Time between orders of course is affected by HQ integrity, EW interference, overall unit readiness, and so on.
>>
>>122679557
The fact that the XB70 exploded in mid air shows that they have a pretty good chance.

I think I want to fire it up again. I still have the email with the CD key but I can't find my installer anywhere. Is there a way to get another installer legitimately or should i just pirate it and use my CD key. Will I still be able to get updates?

You dont want a French designed world war 2 game naziboo

Tiger-90 points T-34-85 60

Tiger gets say, more accuracy, 100 meters more range

Same AP

4 times less autnomny

3 times less speed

2 more frontal AV

Slopped armor mon ami
>>
>>122721515

WW2 Wargame would be much easier to model, since the armor schemes of most tanks and penetration data is readily available. All that needs to be done is to scale the RHAe > AV ratio from 25-30 to 10, a nice round number.

But yes, wehraboos will be pleasantly surprised when Tiger 1 has 10 AV and 14 AP, then T-34/85 shows up with 9 AV and 13 AP.

Do we really need the autism that a community from a WW2 wargame would cause?

The answer isn't just no, but fuck no. Fuck off, there's already 5 million WW2 games in the industry and they're all the same boring shit. I bet you have some nazi avatar on steam.
>>
>>122732385

I don't think it's a bad idea. Decent modeling of units and appropriate availability will create wondrous amounts of wehraboo crying.

More so if France ends up being the best faction in the game, and every match involves tiger 2's being shot to pieces by AMX-50's.

Relic just fucked up too badly with COH 2 drinking the Wehrmacht kool-aid.
>>
>>122735296
Since no one can ever seem to get it right except maybe digital mindsoft, I wouldn't trust Eugen of all people to do a proper WW2 RTS without making Germans retarded terminator memes despite the fact that they got their asses handed to them in any sort of actually symmetrical fight.
>>
>>122736000

>>
>>122736000

Due to them being German and completely enamored with the Nazi mythos.

Relic shit the bed harder than anyone can imagine.

Funnily enough, an old game called Axis and Allies actually got balance quite well. The Germans in that game have some quality units, but also the weakest economy so an army full of tigers wasn't remotely possible.
>>
>>122737724
Honestly I wouldn't even mind their tanks being fucking boss as lone as they were really expensive and their infantry was dogshit. Germany relied heavily on their armor and aircraft to do all the heavy lifting, but every RTS makes all their infantry special forces with the best gear of the war when your average line troop was laughably under-supplied and typically armed with a shitty WW1 bolt action rifle, hence their awkward squad formations around MG-34/42's.

It feels like no developer seems to understand this shit and you get a sea of ultra-elite, highly experienced crack troops that can cloak and teleport with STG-44's with infrared scopes on them and 80 hand grenades per person.

Don't even get me started on how WW2 games handle artillery. There's just too much autism and bias surrounding WW2 themed games, regardless of it trying for 'realism' or not. It's ten times worse than cold war games(Almost all of which play like reskinned WW2 games anyway).

People like WW2 because it's the goldilocks of military technology, before WW2 you either had trench stalemates or people basically still charging one another in line battles, after WW2 it's guys pointing at targets on computer screens and firing missiles/rockets/shells at people they can't even see.

There's a reason for the saying about artillery being king of the battlefield, even during WW2 a ton of kills were achieved by just saturating an area with shells, with the growing lethality of ordinance it gets even worse.

Look at Ukraine, basically all casualties are due to artillery, whenever the Kiev forces try to make an organised push the DNR fires off a BM-21 salvo and removes an entire armored company.

It's almost like they need to communicate instead of expecting the other people on their team to be telepathic. You know, like a simulator, and not Warthunder.
>>
>>122748606
>It's almost like they need to communicate

Which doesn't happen, which is why the 104th separates A2A and A2G most of the time
>>
>>122748647
That seems more like the player's fault than a server's or ED's. Ya get the tools, you gotta learn how to use them. That's the entire point of a simulator.
>>
>>122748820

>>

Considering they don't even keep the aircraft to their respective coalitions, I'm pretty sure they do it because they just really, really, really love A-10's and F-15's and don't give a shit about anything else, and aren't interested in having their turkey-shoots interrupted.
>>
>>122740914
Depends on both when and in which aspect.
In 1941, Germany has the best trained and most experienced troops, veterans from several invasions.

In 1945, the survivors of the red army were pretty hardcore, and they were very well equipped.

Also different countries did different things pretty well, germany probably had the best submariners, soviets had more snipers than anyone else, america had their army in europe nearly fully supplied with semi-automatic rifles at least. The british were absolutely great at building railroads in burma.
>>
>>122749702
This, many games give germany space magic troops because they don't bother researching or just don't care, so they assume troop quality was the same from the days of no scope blitkrieg to the fall of berlin. It's not like the majority of games even allows changes in troop quality depending on the timeframe, or even take place in a long enough timespan for it to make a difference

equally as hilarious is how every Panzer 4 is a H with L/48 while all Shermans are base m4 with 75mm, and all T-34's are 76mm F1.

There were almost 2000 M36 made and they show up even less than IS-2
>>

It's just more of the "1 rifle for every 2 soldiers" meme which ignores the fact that basically every soldier was carrying a PPSh come '43, or that the moist nuggets were so mass-produced that the WW2 production models are still the cheapest firearms you can buy in the US

>>122755961
RO2 is made by wehraboos, they only recently thought recoil was a good idea for german machineguns. If people played classic the prototypes wouldn't exist, meanwhile russians get fuck all useful, an AVT-40 that's primary function is useless and a fucking pps-42.

Not really, no. It takes the balance of vanilla, throws it out the window, and changes a bunch of values to things like range and damage because of 'muh realism', when the maps aren't designed in any way, shape, or form to support it, nor do the mechanics of the game.

If you liked Blitzkreig for CoH1, get it because it's basically the same thing, if not, avoid it, it's shit and wehraboo bait as the name implies. Also, the whole 'year based army' thing if fucking retarded, as is the inclusion of factions just for the sake of having them without any real design intent. If you really want new units that badly, there's a mod coming out called "A world at war" that is adding new factions and gear but maintaining the integrity of the gameplay while trying to improve on existing balance and mechanics, instead of throwing it all out the window and trying to reinvent the wheel.

It's a pretty fun, albeit highly suicidal, plane. Have had it for two days and it's a blast. Wish it didn't constantly shit itself, though. If the engine was reliable it'd probably be able to hold it's own against 4th gens with a bit of tactical placement on the map and communicating with AWACS.

But what do you actually do with it

104th plane deathmatch is boring and TAW doesn't have the 21 enabled

Are you flying SP missions?

Shit, I saw /rtsg/ and someone above was talking about CoH. Thanks for the advice.

I fly mostly 104th with the MiG-21. I practice in SP with the target practice mission on hardest to make sure I've still got everything down and my bindings are right.

The plane itself is fun to learn if you're into that kind of thing. Figuring out how to deploy all of its weapons, including the near suicidal way it does ground attack can be a lot of fun. The RSBN system is really neat, and it's nice to have a pointer to home base at all times.

As far as SP, there's really nothing to do. There's nothing SP to do in DCS at all. That's why I only play multiplayer when I'm not just practicing/learning stuff. It's a great plane, and all of its problems are more DCS problems than of the MiG-21 itself.

>>122780848
Well I mean that's the same for all the aircraft. It's a simulator community, do you expect it to be the size of other game genres?

What happened to that Ace Combat DCS mission someone was designing? I had a good time in the little bit of it that I played.

ED's not forcing these people to use the F-15/A-10. They're popular planes.

Ivan got slain by the KKK, so no more DCS Ace Combat

I just started playing Flashpoint Campaigns

I looked through the manual a bit and it doesn't seem too helpful, just kind of points out where stuff is and what it does, which is pretty self explanatory in the game. I've played war-games before (Unity of Command mainly, Panzer Korp and The Operational Art of War as well) so it doesn't seem too complex to me. I like the fact that you don't have to micromanage every unit in terms of which units it fires on, that's what made me quit playing TOAWIII, shit just got old real quick.

One question I have though. It appears that enemy units can occupy the same hexes as friendly units, that's unusual. How does the game determine who controls a victory point? Can enemy units just roll through your lines if they want to?

>>122782489
>>122787827
I'm here. I went AWOL because new job and Fallout 4, but it's pretty much done. I'll polish it up a bit here sometime soon and upload it for distribution.

>Enemy units can occupy the same hexes as friendly units, that's unusual.
It's realistic. The scale is 500 meters from hex edge-to-hex edge. Typically soviet units want to close into such ranges where their numbers and heavy-hitting weaponry is most effective.

>How does the game determine who controls a victory point?
Depending on how long the game has been in progress, a victory point is given a "range". In a long match, that can be up to 12 hexes in every direction, or 6km. Generally, if you have more units closer to the VP than the enemy, the hex is yours.
So your opponent may have 10 units 6km from the objective and have some influence on it, it will still go to you if you have 2 or 5 sitting on it or next to it.
The condition of a unit also controls how much influence it has. A Soviet MRC with 30 subunits will have more of an effect than an American platoon with 10 subunits.

damn. That's really cool system. Way less "Gamey" then what I'm used to.

>you mean all the salty shitters who love to hate the 104th
dcs multiplayer is absolutely fine, this general is just filled with overly nationalistic autist who care more about having a pissing contest between the f-15 and 27 then actually flying.

What was the T-62's position in the late 80's? Was it a reserve tank, or simply a Cat-C unit? I recall them being the primary tank in use during Afghanistan.

So I have almost finished the rules for the /vg/ Wargame tournament. I have a couple teams already signed up but I was curious about if you thread friends would want to field some teams.

>3v3 standard conquest rules with national only decks (each nation can only be used once per team)
>2-3 week elimination rounds
>Start in mid December

Any interest? I will be allowing forum baddies in as well to fill the ranks.

You can play red or blue, so if you don't think red can handle themselves then make the blue team of your dreams. I think that the amount of USSR and Chinese unicorns should give red a fighting chance.

Just imagine ussr #1 has 17 rpm spetsnaz and 20 rpm motostrelki, ussr #2 has vdv with mg3 and ussr #3 has t-72a with 65% accuracy and 13 rpm t-80um.
