You don't need the gun nuts to get a mod on your gun.
Find another gun with the mods you want then put the base version mods on it and the mods will go in your inventory.

You can turn off the UI by making the HUD completely transparent in the menus, or by using

I prefer tm, because it toggles all menus off completely, pauses the game, and is generally a lot faster. Downside, is that it can be hard to turn it back on if you're not competent.

It doesn't matter. The difference between lowest/highest on lighting/texture quality is a matter of 2 frames per second at most.
The only real performance impacting option is god rays, which are best left at low since, again, there is no visible difference between the lowest and highest option. However god rays at highest actually has a massive performance cost, while lowest costs almost nothing but looks just as good.

If you have a mod you can equip it for free, if you don't have a mod you can build it with resources. You can tell which will happen because the wording changes from "build" to "equip" when you're hovered over the mod in the list.
