What are the most popular SHMUPs that are still being played, /shmupg/? Just getting into them.
If you are new to the genre and or would like to know more about it here is a pretty good documentary about the history of shmups, showcasing a lot of the most noteworthy games of the genre, the minds behind them, the players and more:

Don't ask. Just go with it. Then again I still have mixed feelings about this.

Mushihimesama
DoDonPachi
Ketsui
Deathsmiles
Crimzon Clover
Battle Garegga (somehow)
ESPGaluda
Batrider
Ibara

>>122121708
A murderous bee robot elicits violent impulses from the players, while a murderous loli makes players want to subdue her thru tender and affectionate loving.
>>122121708
Well she can still transform into the murderous bee robot, but the reason is because this hibachi was made to be a nice girl that would protect humanity with hugs and love.
What is your favourite Dodonpachi?
I have to go with the first one, the tune when starting the game and killing your first enemies is legendary.
>>122122175
DOJ and the first one.
Are there any shmups that aren't all about chaining and combos and bullet hell? I want to ease in gently. I can't handle Mushihime yet.
We should also have a SHMUP of the Thread each thread that we can play for funsies.

It's gonna be slow, anon. We need to shill in /vr/ too; they have a shmup general sometimes but it always gets pushed off the board.
Gotta consolidate all the shmuppers. I'm going to make some emulator/rom bundles soon too so people can just grab and go.
Later gens all seem like ports and have way more games so I'm struggling a bit to pick out the Saturn/DC/etc exclusives.
>>122121539
Right now I and over 6000 more people are playing Mushihimesama.
If you're interested in starting a game with a lively community i think it's one of the best choices since it's currently getting many newcomers to the genre.
Touhou is very popular too, although game discussion is usually overshadowed by secondary talk. If you don't mind people constantly fawning over characters you should check /jp/'s game threads like this one >>>/jp/14279695
>>122127943
>I'm struggling a bit to pick out the Saturn/DC/etc exclusives

Just look at the leaderboards for active shmups. The French shmup-forum and System11 have the best Western leaderboards.
>>122124034
>>122124617
3rd Ketsui player reporting in. Going for a 2-ALL + a high-score. I did pic related a couple of days ago. It was a NB run where I died on Evaccania. My max route potential for the 1st loop is around 230-240m, it's pretty hard to do though. I need to practice it some more.
I remember there being a couple more Ketsui players on /vr/.
>>122127943
/vr/ shmup generals never get pushed off. If anything they just reach bump limit. /vr/ is one of the slowest boards on 4chan. And I already told them that Mushi got released in the latest shmup thread.
Also, fuck yeah for the revival of shmup generals.
>>122129017
But Garegga is better as ARC. Why play a knock off version?
Stick, pad or kb?
>>122129335
Does the arcade version have the option of changing the enemy bullets so they're more visible?
>>122129382
I play with pad just for my personal comfort and also because I'm kinda poor. I'd likely use an arcade stick. Maybe I'll scrounge up some shekels and build a hobo one.
I'm contemplating configuring JoyToKey for ChoRenSha so I can have autofire. I know the creator frowns on autofire, but I'm going to give myself carpal tunnel at this rate.
on mushihimesama should i start on original difficulty or skip straight to maniac?
i've been able to 1cc touhou games on normal with some effort if that gives you an idea of my skill level.
death to waifufags
What's the most effective training routine?
>do all stages separately every day, then try full runs when you're comfortable with
>do full runs every day, credit feeding until 1cc + score you want
>>122129767
Original.
Touhou ain't shit compared to actual shmups.
PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY:
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=1896
and specially this http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=4049
>>122129767
Original novice it's a great way to start getting into the game if you don't have a lot of prior experience with Cave shooters.
>i've been able to 1cc touhou games on normal with some effort if that gives you an idea of my skill level.
Touhou games's difficulty vary depending the title, but you shouldn't start with maniac unless you feel really confident.
>>122130551
Credit feeding is never a good idea. It teaches you bad habits. It's okay to do it once just to clear the whole game so you have an idea of what the bosses are going to be and what enemies there are, but after that, don't touch them credits.
Or at least limit yourself. When I'm new to a game and not gunning for 1cc, I still try to keep it to 5 and under.
If I'm feeling MAXIMUM SCUM, I usually play shmups on MAME, so I'll save-state at the beginning of each stage so I can practice the whole stage without having to replay level 1-whatever.
>>122130765
>novice
I already tried that, it's boring as hell for the first couple levels, i don't want to fall asleep before there's any real challenge.
I beat touhous Scarlet Devil through Subterranean Animism, I'll keep trying original for a while longer.
>>122129382
Just choose whichever you're comfortable with. We have skilled players using all of those so just choose whatever you like.
>>122129767
Start playing Original and if that feels too easy for you switch to Maniac. You can also start playing on Novice Mode regular mode is too hard.
>>122130020
Take it easy.
>>122130927
Creditfeeding is good for practice purposes though.
So for someone who is learning Mushihimesama, what power should I stick with? I like M a lot personally but I see a lot of people go with W.
Should I go with W too? I'm aiming for 1CC
>>122130551
That depends on the player's preferences.
The idea is that the player has to have as much as he can, so he should play in whatever manner he feels more comfortable.
I don't follow a specific routine but what i found to be the most optimal for me is the following:
>when starting a new game go for an easy or easier difficulty and after managing to 1cc it go for the next dif. option.
>Don't use continues until i reach the latter stages. Then either use the training option for them (if available) or start doing runs credit-feeding in order to learn faster (and not having to deal with the annoyance of redoing the first stages).
>Approach regular runs as an opportunity to learn and get better without pressure. Do 1cc attempts from time to time.
>Try to not play more than an hour a day.
>Care about the score but don't get obsessed with it.
>>122131942
W is far too slow, imo. You have to have super memory autism and start moving before the projectiles even occur.
M is probably the best for a normal player.
>>122131942
You should go with the one that feels right for you.
Even if another type is agreed to be more effective for certain means, you'll only get good if you keep playing, and for that you need to have as much fun as you can.
Does the ship in ChoRenSha have a name? I'm autistic about these things.
>>122129382
Keyboard, pad or arcade stick depending the system (and place) i'm playing them on.
>>122133230
I love Cho Ren Sha. But I don't think that ship has a name. Took me a little bit of anger to finally beat the true final boss since the last phase gets pretty random.
>>122133554
Did you fingerbang the fuck out of that shot button or did you autofire?
>>122131296
>I beat touhous Scarlet Devil through Subterranean Animism
Excellent, you'll do fine.
Just expect Stage 5 to be quite challenging.
>>122133828
Finger bang. There's an autofire button? If I only I knew that sooner.
>>122134537
No, there isn't. The creator frowns upon it, but you can use JoyToKey and other shit to make autofire.
>>122131942
Whichever you have more fun with anon.
All shot types are viable for a 1CC.
W shot is the one you'll see most often though as its really the only one suitable for scoring.
I need game trailers and reviews. Post them.

W-power is actually the best since it has the highest concentrated firepower in the game when point-blanked, but it requires absolute mastery since you can't move as quickly.
I use M-power in Ultra/Arrange and S-power in Original to 1CC. When scoring, it's always W-power.

>>122140618
There's no slippery slope.
Although not everyone likes every shmup, waifus are waifus.
We should all get along no matter which games one prefers. This is the SHMUP/STG general so every game that falls in that category belongs here, Touhou included.
>>122141112
Yeah, but please remember to make Touhou a secondary focus. Touhou has its own board, and this should cater more to the REST of the STG franchises. I don't mind talking about 2hu here either but it shouldn't turn into a 2hu waifu shitposting general.
>>122141409
As long as people remain civil it should be fine. That goes for people from both fences.

It really depends on what level player you are. Sometimes toughing it out is the only way to improve, other times it's better to play on a lower difficulty. Try practicing the stages that you're having trouble with for a couple of days/weeks, and if you're still not consistent at them by then, then lower the difficulty.
The better you become as a player, the harder it will get to improve.

Aye, I'm one of them, I cleared it once again a couple of days ago. Miserably failing at evaccaneer really stupidly, I was holding max lives and 3 bombs in stock and for some dumb reason I died once by a little popcorn tank at the end of stage 5 and then failed twice during evaccaneer and bombed again. Still I don't really have time now to keep playing as often, irl problems are getting heavy, maybe at the end of december I'll get the 2-ALL.

What does /shmupg/ think (if you've even heard of) pic related? I found it used in fucking Gamestop for 2 dollars. Aside from poor sub-weapon balance and the stylus blocking your view sometimes (can only move through the touch screen) I though it was pretty solid.

There's a Japanese freeware one, but I don't think the documentation is translated. Some example games would be Ex Extra. I also think
Danmakufu is also possible, but pretty strict in what you can make ( as in Touhou-clones, mostly ). You can bend it pretty impressive amount though to make them non-Touhou I sure did during Danmakufu competitions

Most people just use Bluestacks/*insert your favorite android emulator here* and play it on their PC. Also lots of mobiles offer controller support. I can usually plug a controller into my tablet without any problem.
Also, even if you do want to play with the touch screen, you don't have to cover the unit (and why the fuck would you use your thumb oh god), most of them let you touch and hold anywhere as the point and it autofires from there. I played a lot of Strikers III this way and it was fine. I usually just hold directly below the ship so I can still see where my hitbox is and I have no issues.

>I remember there being a couple more Ketsui players on /vr/.
Yeah man i'm one of them and holy shit your loop 1 is getting strong scoring wise, I get around 20 mill less but qualify for omote very frequently, yesterday i died at the end of loop 1 with literally a few shots left, would of been my first time into ura... oh well it'l come! I played stick for 4/5 years and switched to pads in the last couple with which i've destroyed all my old scores and feel more comfortable with in general so yeah whatever you feel best with. >>122190936
>I literally just bought Ketsui a few days ago and am relatively new to shmups. Any pointers? I have no idea what an ura or omote is.
Ok well you don't need to think about ura or omote for a whilst as they are the second loops which take a decent amount of skill to even qualify for so for now focus on that 1st loop also as a first ever shmup be prepared to get a kicking for a whilst as this is not a beginners game. Try to get comfoy with the hitbox which is a very small 4 pixel square in the centre of the ship. Watch some plays on youtube to understand the nature of the scoring which is fundamentally quite simple to grasp at a basic level and then just play but try to play consciously really think about what's coming up and the best way to deal with that "routing" as we call it, trial and error is the name of the game even if you lift some ideas from plays on ytube you'll find that you may adapt it slightly to work better for you or maybe find a less risky version etc. Lastly have fun Ketsui is the best.

I know that feeling so well. I've had the same thing happen to me several times. And an even worse thing happen to me once, I don't even want to think reminisce about that.
Are there any shmups that are not rote memorization? I'm not trying to revive the "skill vs memo" shitstorm I just think it'd be interesting to watch. With other genres people make crazy exhibition videos showing off their skill but with shmups it's just like "yeah you played the game well" with an occasional "I messed up this part but clutch dodged it out" and it's a little boring.
>>122201294
I mean the point items that spill out of enemies when you blow them up. Every 2000 you get a life up. Sometimes I get a multiplier like x2, x4 etc, the highest I've gotten is x16, which is nice because you gain lives quickly. I'm just not exactly sure how to build the multiplier and most of the time I get stuck on x4.
Sorry if I'm not being very clear.
>>122204372
This is literally the selling point of Steredenn >>122191140
It's basically a SHMUP + a roguelike in terms of randomly generating the stage/enemies/weapons. Go forth and enjoy a different kind of skill.
>>122204372
Try ChoRenSha68k on Hard. The suicide bullets add quite a bit of randomness to it, and they move fast as fuck. Adapt in less time than it takes to blink or you're fucking dead, and that's against basic fucking enemies.
>>122204519
Ah. There's only a score multiplier, which affects your score from POW, grazing and bullet cancel. It doesn't do anything to Dragon Orbs (as I explained earlier). The shit you're seeing on the screen is your current multiplier. It actually caps at 64x. The multiplier is determined only by one thing; how quickly you defeat an enemy when it appears on the screen. If you leave an enemy on the screen that appeared first to shoot a different enemy (whether it's bigger or whatever), your multiplier will reduce while that enemy is out. Dying also obviously fucks your multiplier.
Basically if you let an enemy escape? Fucks up your multiplier. Enemies appeared in a wave and you shot them in the wrong order? Fucks your multiplier.
Game play basically is
>kill everything as fast as possible
>to kill fast as possible, graze bullet to fill meter to spam Burn
It becomes a juggling act in killing enemies quickly at the same time you graze bullets to Burn Air Raid bigger enemies/huge waves.
Honestly a little bit obnoxious compared to some other games scoring systems.
>>122204372
from what I heard touhou games are more random than most shmups, even though there is still a lot of memorization. However really most shmups are still hard to execute even if you have the route memorized (if they have a good scoring system that is)
>>122204372
>>122205195
oh and of course there are touhou 3 and 9, which have very little memorization, but are not fully traditional shmups
>>122204372
Eschatos has major RNG, especially on the third stage. It has chaining mechanics, but is more about general strategy and positioning for the waves than strict routing.
>>122205195
>from what I head touhou games are more random than most shmups
That's kind of true but it's really meaningless. The randomization is insignificant, you don't really notice it unless you're trying to notice it, or unless you're one of those people that actually plays games by memorization alone rather than trajectory prediction mixed with memorization. If you think you can play touhou games with your eyes closed you're mostly wrong, but it's not significant enough that you actually have to significantly alter how you dodge each pattern.
>>122205880
even for completely random spam there still is an approach you're gonna take and some kind of dodging scheme for certain patterns
>>122205115
interesting, thanks.
so when is next cave port gonna get announced?
>>122206318
Yeah, but at what level do you stop splitting hairs? You can argue that even walking is a pattern where you need to put one foot in front of the other. Whether the entire game is one big pattern you memorize, or the game is broken up into a big pile of chunks that must be memorized and strung together when the situation presents itself, you're still memorizing in either scenario.
I don't think there's a true "random" shmup that's nothing but twitchy reaction gameplay. Even Steredenn's enemies look like they fire the same kind of shots in the same patterns when they appear; it's just a matter of WHEN they appear that is subject to chance.
>>122206439
No problem. It's kind of weird that most shmups aren't transparent in that they tell you what they actually want you to be doing to achieve a big score. I guess figuring it out is supposed to be part of the fun, but later shmups got more and more obtuse and I know how frustrating it can be when the screen is just filled with gems and multipliers and someone screaming "BOMBER" and flashing and you have no idea what the fuck is happening.
>>122206594
If I remember right, it'll be December.
>>122206819
It's funny because every skill requires memorization. You always need to know what to expect and what to do. That's what makes them skills. If you could "master" a game without familiarity with that game, then that means you haven't mastered anything in the first place because it means that there's nothing to master.
>>122207881

But why though?
I don't think there's anyone in this day and age that ONLY uses GoG over Steam.
>>122208697
trying to put it on gog is retarded
they would not even get 1K sales from it in my opinion, only thing they would get is getting the game pirated
>>122208934
It's already been pirated.
A bigger problem would be the massive brokenness of the port. Given GoG's speed in pushing out updates, the version could end up being inferior to the Steam one - if it gets further fixes down the line.
>>122209161
I'd rather have them all either on steam or on Gog, alternatives are cool, but it is a poor choice.
>>122193837
>I've heard that the player 2 side has very slightly lower rank than player 1.
The only game i know that does this is salamander 2.
>>122208934
I was able to download a pirate of mushi within 1 hr of it's steam release. Fortunately for me it runs super well on my setup so i bought it after.
Anyone here own an actual arcade cab or even a DIY mamecab?
>>122213528
I wanted to buy one, but shit happened and I ended up fucked up monetarily.
Quite a pity, it was a gr8 machine with crt monitor et all, not vertical, though.
Are you planning on a mamecab or something?
>>122214340
Yeah, pretty much.
What I really want is a Gradius cab, but in my heart I know that it's stupid to buy a 30 year old cab/PCB for a ridiculous "collector" price when I could just make a MAME cab that's infinitely cheaper and requires no maintenance.
>>122214950
The real thing, huh?
I have this thing against piracy nowadays, so I can't comment on cabs, but you could hook up modern hardware to the old pcb
>>122139786
Definitely Casper. I'm a big Deathsmiles fan and I like all of them to some extent (even Follett), but Casper is certainly my favorite.

It's coming along alright, but will probably still take a few days at the very least at this rate. In case those couple of guys who saw my post the other day are watching.
>>122179890

You know I keep kicking myself about when playing through Mushihimesama? I keep forgetting I have bombs sk every time I lost, I could've used my fucking bombs.
>>122215281
I'll actually try Mahou Otome if I know what the fuck is going on, so I'm looking forward to it.
>>122215214
I'm 50/50 on piracy. Stuff like Mushihimesama that is actively out and will support more shmups coming out, I'm fine with supporting.
An old Gradius cab that Konami isn't going to see the money from, or even if they were, the Gradius team that's not even with Konami anymore that wouldn't see any money from, is less of a concern for me. If I knew my money was going to the people that deserved it, they could have it.
I know it's the typical "I buy good games and pirate bad ones" argument, but I really do feel that way and I still do buy games while pirating others.
>>122215941
To me it is a moral issue, it aches, because I want to play the games and I can't.
>>122215465
Looks pretty neat, it's made by the same people that did Gigantic Army which I played a bit of a while ago and liked (although it did have some issues). Will check it out once it comes out on steam.
Also, apparantly they released a different game on steam yesterday called Steel Strider which looks like an improved sequel/successor to Gigantic Army. It's not a shmup but it still looks pretty fun. Their games don't seem to sell very well sadly, but apparently good enough to keep making more of them so that's alright I suppose.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/404100/
>>122216707
I could see if it were new games, but I don't see the moral issue on companies that don't even exist anymore or have long been out of business (like Toaplan).
Toaplan went bankrupt and ceased to exist in 1994.
>>122215465
I played the demo. It's good, but not as good as Satazius (yet).

No, I believe it's similar to theft, illegally acquired goods, which isn't correct.

It's good but IIRC, only one ship has an ability for slow movement, so you'll need to main it if you wish to play on higher difficulties.
Also, the developers somehow fucked up the bullet colors with a patch, but I don't know if it got fixed.
>>122207881
I don't think I explained my point well enough. Let me give an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt0zbYU6B0w Here's a video that I enjoyed watching recently. This person has obviously memorized the game to play this well there's no disputing that however you could play it completely differently and be just as good and even the same guy would probably end up having the fights go completely differently if he did it again. That's the kind of shmup I'm looking for.

I think my eyes are fucked because on Mushi, it's like I go blind from all the bullets
I also can't get boss 1 on normal/original down consistently. Keep dying on phase 1 to one of 2 patterns
How do you guys usually learn bosses? Dying a million times until you figure it out?
>>122232019
Used to be the way.
Nowadays I mimic youtubes or save state at the boss so I can redo it over and over without having to go through the stage each time I wanna learn.

>>122232019
>it's like I go blind from all the bullets
Something similar happens to me too. Sometimes there's so many bullets on screen my brain just freezes.

>>122235758
Unfortunately it's broken on Steam. Your Bullets change color, and most enemy Bullets are grey making them IMPOSSIBLE to see. It's been like this for months.
You should be good if you play it on PS4 though
Hey guys,
A week ago I created a YT account so that I could upload shmup 1ccs and score-runs for those that can't do it on their own setup:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp2e9X5tR9BLdSlIGjzftDA
So if you have something worth uploading, upload the input or replay and give me the link, or send me the replay directly at [email protected]
Also tell me which Mame version you're using and the ROM name and important data like that and I'll upload the video for you soonish.
>>122240907
Ouch. I got to remember that.
>>122241297

I'm total shit, so I won't have anything worth uploading, but good to know.
Hopefully someone can do Progear so I can see how to gitgud.
Anyone know what shmups have boss rushes? I'm tired of doing stages. I just wanna 1v1 big guys.
>>122242428

#define USE_LOTTES_CRT 1
figure out the ratio of screen res to game render res, to simulate a render box around 240x320 in size.
mine was 1080 / 320 = 3.375, ratio of box to vertical since the box takes up 100% of the vertical view
1080 / (4/3) = 810, number of actual pixels the render has horizontally
1920 / 810 = 2.37
so you want to divide the screen size between those two ratios for your pixelated resolution, pick whatever you like. the screenshot is with a ratio of 3.0
i tried guessing at how to set both axes precisely but just got crashes for my trouble, i don't really know the syntax or how the shader digests the parameters.
search for "float2 res = SCREEN_SIZE"
float2 res = SCREEN_SIZE / ratio;

Literaly change your retarded psychology, nothing in this world can be learnt to a competent level without some frustration and repetition but your desire to reach the end goal should over come everything else. Try just practicing trouble areas aswell using savestates/ level select/training whatever instead of full runs all the time.

In case you're not familiar with the game's mechanics, activating a hyper gives you a brief period of invincibility. He has precisely routed bullet cancels and invincibility abuse from hypers and bombs to barely squeeze through the most dangerous attacks so he doesn't have to go through the bullets any more than he has to. It's still no less insane but luck doesn't have that much to do with it, aside from RNG in some of the bullet patterns.

Yeah, it's unfair really. I was iffy about shmups after seeing that video myself, but then I actually tried them and realized it's not that bad at all. I mean it still kicked my ass but in a much fairer and less overwhelming way.
I hate it when people respond to "what are shmups like?" with videos of TLBs and final bosses. It gives a bad impression and probably scares otherwise interested people away.
I kind of wish that this whole "ultra hardcore genre" reputation could go away. It makes it harder to interest people in the genre because they probably think that they can't play it at all unless they practice 6 hours a day for years.

When I made the thread I wanted to lure people in with videos of thunderforce, sadly thread went to shit for having the word "waifu" on it.
We should display videos of the games on original mode or even more traditional shmups so people aren't afraid and think we are some sort of autistic robots
>>122295601
Why would you want to lie to people like that?
>>122295601
As an autistic robot, I actually find traditional shmups to be harder. In bullet hell/manic shooters/whatever I can get a shitty 1cc with a little prior knowledge and dodging skills, but Gradius and Raiden and Darius fuck me up.
>>122295998
Lie to people about?
>>122296005
Some are easier.
>>122296005
Depends on the game, a little.
For instance Darius Twin and Darius Burst were pretty easy iirc but they were made for the home market rather than eating quarters
And I guess some people are intimidated by the bullet hell bullet patterns and want to ease into it?
>>122296230
Lie about not being autistic robots
>>122295601
That's why I'd like to see Deathsmiles ported to Steam soon (well, aside from my insatiable love for Deathsmiles in general).
The game's easy with difficult selection to make it even easier. Barring the EX stage, the final stage is the only time it gets hard. It could do well of showing that not all shmups are insane bullet curtains. Maybe newcomers would have enough fun blowing shit up easily for the first 20 minutes that they'd feel motivated enough to try and push for a clear when it's just the one final stage standing in their way.
I might be in the minority but I actually love playing for score in that game, too. I don't know what it is but Deathsmiles was the first game that I researched into the scoring mechanics and practiced scoring routes for.
>>122296328
Funny that you should mention that, Deathsmiles is also the first game where I bothered to go for high scores.
Oh shit, that means we are really autistic robots.

Fuck me you can't read son, he said he gets bored trying to git gud because of repetition I'm telling him learn to enjoy the grind because getting good is impossible without it. Now fuck off you oxygen thieving cunt you probably have mushihimesama novice modes to credit feed.
Well, another depressing session with DOJBL. 2 misses in stage 2-3, BEFORE the power-up carrier in the start.
Jesus, I will never get the 2-ALL. Only good thing that came out was some 2-1 chain route optimization.
I really wish I could get the 2nd loop clear this weekend...
...Then onto the actual 2-ALL.
I probably should blow off some steam and try tomorrow. Start working on the game, for example.
>>122292220
Lot of shmups become very strict about routes on high-level play.
>>122297872
Same here. Although, I learned to prefer shooting over dodging.
>>122299798
How so?
Quick question for anyone who might know, does the system11 shmup forum have a limit on the length of posts? I'm working on my Gothic wa Mahou Otome english guide and it's turning out quite long, so I'd like to know ahead of time if it'll fit all in one post or if I should reserve two or a few of the first posts in the topic when I post it.
>>122301886
I'd block off 3 posts for it. There's limits. Not sure what it is, but it exists.
so how many hours a day of schmups you guys play?
I've started playing the day after mushihimesama came out and I play for at least 3-5 hours
>>122302827
Usually only have time for 2.
>>122302265
Thanks. I've never written a guide for anything before. So many buttons and menus to explain. It's not nearly done yet, but here's the current word count.
>>122302827
I've been playing Mushihimesama for about an hour or so a day since it came out. Skipped a day a couple of times, though. I can almost no-death up until stage 4 on 1.0 Original.
>>122301552
stages 1 through 3 are retard boring on dot eater
>>122302827
More or less 1.
>>122302827
If I'm actually trying for a goal, be it a 1cc or a higher score, usually 2 hours every day that I can manage it.
Otherwise, I'll flit between several different games throughout the week, never spending more than a credit or so on one.
>>122302827
during the week usually 2-3, on weekends sometimes 5 or more
>>122304856
Scoring is always fun, getting a 1cc can get more time
>>122302827
1, ultimate comfy.
>>122302827
2-5 hours, when I feel like going for a session.
I take short breaks, work out, and eat during that time rather than grinding it in one sitting. With other games I don't really break it up as much, but STGs tire you out quickly.
>>122302827
I play in short bursts but several times, can't exactly say how much, I should play more.
>>122135984
here
I made it! My 3rd 1cc. First cleared it with two credits yesterday and then learned how to preserve lives on final boss pretty quickly - I play with console port mentality (with 3 credits) and only after beating games like that use save states/practice mode. Even had no miss run up to 6th stage, though my current 1cc run is pretty crappy and I barely survived it.
>>122306489
Congrats.
Now play the superior game, ESP Ra.De
I hate Pink Sweets. The rank system in this game is absolutely bullshit. The rank system in Ibara Kuro is fine but this game's rank system is EVIL. And the only way to legitimately 1cc the game is to trigger infinite lives.
>>122307043
Thanks, I love esprade, but I'm afraid I'm too scrub for it - from 4th stage it's way over my head.
>>122307369
I don't like PS either but love Muchi Muchi Pork! It's much more forgiving and accessible.
>scrubs using more than one credit on first loops
you shouldn't credit feed until you 1cc the first loop
then you can start working on the 2nd loop and scoring however you want
>>122308501
Credit-feeding can be useful to practice latter stages if the game lacks a training mode.
>>122308063
As far as I know, I have no clue who succeeded on no missing Pink Sweets.

is it just trial and error until you get lucky with a movement that's able to dodge?
>>122312197
A few things :
- You know already what the attack pattern is, so you know where it's going to go/how to behave
- You are extremely comfortable with the size of the hitbox vs the rest of the ship sprite
- You are already anticipating the move. It's not "wait to see if he shoots and then try to react", it's "he's going to be shooting here and I need to be moving" before it happens.

Who woulda thunk shmuppers would die in 1 hit?
>>122313913
Well being an asshole comes with anonymity, not much we can do there. You get used to it after a while.
Cut it out with the elitism and shaming. I see this everywhere else when it comes to shmup discussions, and it's getting pretty annoying. It really doesn't matter if someone practices uses savestates, practice modes, or just credit feeding. It really doesn't matter if they're getting 1CCs, high scores, or clearing loops. The point is they're playing the game and enjoying it.
>>122313391

I'll say this right now though, after 500 posts this general is leagues better than the vert-vs-hort autismfestival that's happening in /vr/.
And people unironically believe /vr/'s objectively the best board.
>>122316843
I know, this place has been alright so far, which is why I don't want to see it slip into a shit-flinging fest.
>>122316843
I like Hori more but I can't deny that Vert is superior for the purposes of competitive play/scoring/etc.
Hori seems more fun for like a "story mode"/game you play just to beat/win.
Exceed 1st seems pretty gosh darn awful.
Managed to get that NB 1-ALL. Still a bit disappointed because I didn't manage to break 200m in the 1st loop. I died a couple of times on stage 4 and stage 5, most of them could've been avoided. Those were really annoying to have because stages 1,2 and 3 went pretty much perfectly. I guess I know which stages to practice next.
Also managed to loop, so I guess this is some kind of progress? I'll have to start practicing the 2nd loop too now.

Ouch. Are you allowed to choose the other two parts? It's a bit of a buzzkill, but you could reset until you get an engine you like.
Regardless, I have faith in you. And I have faith that one day I won't get sniped by an ace while trying to kill the blimp.
Why is the steam version of Ikrauga so much worse then the Gamecube version? I fucking wish it had the conquest mode that let you play each level in parts so you didn't have to go through the entire stage each time you wanted to practice something.
Honestly I'd just play the GC version, but I'm so used to KB over a controller now days.
>>122355309
It doesn't matter which engine I get, I just die before I can get anything done. Only way to get that high of a score is to get a max multiplier going and kill a rare target like an ace submarine

>Also called Special Version, or DDP BLUE ROM, this is a special PCB handed out to the winner of a DoDonPachi scoring contest held by Cave to promote the game's Saturn port, in which each participant was asked to submit the highest score they could reach within a three-days period. It is essentially the same game with an extreme increase in difficulty, the addition of a Hyper Mode (a primitive form of the feature later seen in the sequel DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou) and a blue (rather than red) title screen. Extremely rare and sought after, a single specimen have been confirmed to exist so far.

It's perfect on mame you couple of sad cunts.
Nobody likes Rosa. If I wasn't already so in love with Casper, and if Windia and Sakura didn't exist after that, then I would totally love Rosa. ... Poor Rosa.
>>122394010
It seems to be some sort of Japanese cliche, I think. Haruka from Senran Kagura is the same age as Rosa and also hates being called old.

Please don't bully our resident moralfag. No amount of carrot or stick will pull him over to the piracy side.

Do we need to tell the boy that I was bumping by starting conversation and I had no better thing to say or is he satisfied with calling people retards?

Is tyrian 2000 worth a try?
>>122395390
This girl, you mean? Her name is Cattleya.
>>122395419
Deleted and reposted this because in the profile, I originally typo'd "Reco" as "Reko".
>>122395752
For dangun it is.
so that archive that was posted earlier has shmupmame 2.2.
is it better than 4.4 or is it just not up to date?
>>122395794
I like it. It's an euroshmup with health and shields - if you're into that sort of thing it's definitely a nice game.
Be sure to try the unlockable difficulty options if the stock ones are too easy.
>>122395752
Unless you're going for a WR tier score MAME is perfectly fine for pre-SH3
>>122395830
Damn it, why does she have to share a name with the worst Queen's Blade character?
>>122395830
How many grils are in this in total senpai?
>>122396626
A lot. If I had to make a rough estimate, I'd say 100 at the very least. I think a lot of them are OCs, but there are also event and gacha cards of other Cave girls, such as the Deathsmiles girls, Reco, and AI.
>>122398390
That's a lotta waifus. Do you even get to pick the one you want, or is it like a random gachapon and you just end up with whatever?
>>122395794
It's alright. I'm not much for the health+shields shmups, but I liked it more than I usually like them.
>>122399602
When you first start the game, you get to choose one of the five in pic related to start with, and I think the game might give you a few free gacha draws to start with as well. You gain more girls from completing some stages with high ranks, weekly contests and special stages, various gachas, and such.

Blue hair > light purple > brown hair > rose in hair > green loli
>>122401398
Blah, guess I should've included their names. From left to right: Plumeria, Cattleya, Ranan, Souffle (green loli), Rosalie.
>>122401707
Rosalie > Plumeria > Souffle > Cattleya > Ranan
>>122403217
Why is Ranan worst girl? Just for being MC?
>>122401398
Do the girls have different shooting styles? Like Concentrated fire, spread shot, homing, etc? This factors heavily into my choice for best girl.
>>122403510
Nah, she's just the least pretty to me I guess. She's not bad, she just doesn't have anything to make her stand out among the others.
She kind of looks like Rin from Little Busters. That's cool I guess.
>>122403641
The shooting style depends on the particular card, rather than the girl. A girl can have different cards with different shot properties (for example, the shot type for regular Souffle will behave differently than the shot type for swimsuit Souffle).
What DOES remain consistent is a girl's element. Ranan is fire, Cattleya is water, Souffle is wind, Plumeria is light, and Rosalie is darkness. Element determines how much damage you deal to enemies and how many points you get from destroying enemies. The elemental charts are as follows:
Fire > Wind > Water > Fire
Darkness > Light > Darkness
Note that the Light/Darkness and Fire/Water/Wind are neutral towards each other (for example, fire against darkness is simply neutral). Attacking with weaknesses will net bonus damage and points, while attacking with resisted elements (using fire on water, for example, or water on wind) results in reduced shot damage and gimped points. Light and Darkness do not resist anything.
For Mushihimesama what shot types am I supposed to be using.
People are saying A+C does the most damage but I'm not sure if C should be full atuo or rapid full auto.
Also does tapping C while holding A do more damage or is it just the same as holding both?
>>122404646
Ah alright. I just downloaded it, so this helps. Putting my faith in the LIGHT. Plumeria has the biggest plums, so we in there now.
>>122404819
>For Mushihimesama what shot types am I supposed to be using.
For scoring purposes I mostly see W shot. I think because it does the most damage when point blanked.
>>122405054
By shot type I mean button layout. Like in the options there's Shot, Full Auto, Rapid auto etc etc. Not sure what I should be using.
Also I've been playing with S-Power since I heard it apparently does the most damage when focused. Only Shmup I've ever 1CC'd was crimzon clover novice so I'm trying to clear original arcade on mushi atm. Up to stage 5 with no miss so it's going alright.
>>122404646
Weird, I just started the game and it only lets me pick between Ranan, Cattleya and Souffle.
>>122405051
Alright, cool. I took Souffle as my starter.
Let me explain boss fights real quick. Bosses will shoot out multiple orbs of different elements. To effectively fight a boss, you must shoot at orbs with an element that is weak to the shot you're using. For example, using a light shot, you will fire at a darkness orb and destroy it, which launches a counterattack at the boss.
The most effective way to fight a boss is to destroy orbs that are the same element as the boss itself. The boss's element will be pictured next to his health bar. For example, if the boss is water type, the easiest way to beat him is to equip a wind shot type and destroy the water orbs, which will deal bonus damage to the boss and also cancel out some bullets on the higher difficulties.
Sorry, I'm about to leave for a bit, so that explanation was pretty slapped together. Hopefully it makes enough sense to go off of.
>>122405598
Really? Huh. I guess I was wrong then, sorry. Makes sense though now that I think about it, light and darkness shot types are a bit rarer than the other three elements, and they're not as helpful early in the game since more stuff is weak to the fire/water/wind until lategame.
>>122405916
It's okay. Looks like you don't even play as the girls themselves, but some winged homo. JAPAAAAAAAAAAN
I have a question about recording runs. What is more acceptable: recording while playing or recording a replay? I want to be sure that i don't do anything wrong before making any videos.
>>122406431
It would be better to record a replay, since you'll know how the run goes beforehand.
Just wanted to remind you /shmupg/ that this exists and it's totally free!

http://se-made.com/finalboss.html
>>122406431
If you're doing a high-quality video, recording a replay playback is more convenient than recording hours and hours of shit you don't want to see and having to set up recording every time you play.
Howewer, MAME replays aren't 100% reliable at syncing when played back, and some games have buggy replay functions that may desync, so if you need to be sure that your PB run will get succesfully recorded without any desyncs you want to record all runs.
>>122406883
Looks pretty neat, I can see a lot of references to other shmups aswell, going to try it out right now.
>>122406418
Yeah, it's unfortunate but I guess you get used to it. It's a bit cringeworthy though since he's an obvious "generic male to self insert as" and is otherwise just not necessary.
Plus they all call him "Master", except Souffle who calls him, of course, "Oniichan".
>>122406883
Something about the way that looks reminds me of White Butterfly. Maybe it's just the orange, I don't know.
>have a run go much better than usual
>take notice, think "Hey, I'm getting better!"
>immediately start doing worse, lose two lives in quick succession
Remember guys, dont think aboutthe game
>>122414850
The pressure gets to you. Whenever I'm close to 1CCing a game for the first time, I get a huge adrenaline rush. Sometimes it helps and I get into a great rhythm, and sometimes it crushes me and I mess up everything.
>>122416870
>sometimes it crushes me and I mess up everything
Happens to me every single fucking time I'm recording something good.
>>122416870
It sure sucks, doesnt it? Happened to me too when I was trying to 1CC MoF.
>get to Kanako's last spellcard with a truckload of lives
>think I can just bombspam if things get too hairy>bombs dont even affect her at all
>get a bit nervous, start losing lives on a spellcard I usually do well on
But building confidence and learning to be consistent is all part of gitting gud, Rome wasnt built in a day after all.
Any new info on Raiden V?
I hope its no gonna be stuck on the xbone desu.
>>122421395
Yeah, it sucks. Just gotta hope you overcome it or had enough resources left in reserve to make up for whatever screw-ups it causes.
Most of my first-time Touhou 1CCs were done with no lives left at the end. Took a few minutes to calm down after those ones.
Do you think the mushihimesama ever accidently stepped on a bug
Graze that page 10
What shmup has the best grazing mechanics?
>>122429431
Shikigami no Shiro, where your firepower and score multipliers are directly determined by how close you are to something that can kill you.
Is Stage 5 of Mushihimesama generally considered harder or easier than stage 4? Normal Original mode. I'm currently trying to practice surviving stage 4, and I'm just curious about stage 5 since I don't have much experience with it.
>you can change the controls in Nanostray 2 so you can move around with the control pad instead of the stylus
Holy shit
Why didnt you anons tell me this
>>122435135
Probably because I played it once, didn't like the controls and haven't touched it since?
Thanks anon I might fire it up next weekend
I'm probably not going to get a satisfying answer to this, because it's mostly just my problem, but whatever.
I have trouble sticking with a game. Practicing the current section that I'm stuck on, over and over, wears me down pretty quick. So I find myself wanting to jump over to other games.
Is there some advice for keeping some spice in playing?

I thought we had to 750?
>>122438446
Anon you're like 47 posts too early, bump limit here is 750.
>>122437983
You can't just do nothing but practice, you gotta have some fun too.
Do at least one full run a day. 1cc attempt, score run, gimmick run, credit feed, doesn't matter, just enjoy the fucking game.
If you want to mix things up then try picking ships you don't usually pilot or game modes you don't usually try, just to step outside of your comfort zone.

Lord knows I wasn't going to make one, and I'm going to bed soon, so I don't mind. This prevents me from worrying /shmupg/ will disappear over night.
