Damn, I kinda expected the orc caves to be a cakewalk as a worshiper of Beogh, but I didn't expect it to so effortless. I mean, I probably killed only a handful of orcs and ogres in the entire caves, the rest were either converted or killed by my army of orcs.

How do you even play archers without any movement speed advantage? I roll a HEHu and it all goes fine until ogres and orc warriors. Each encounter is 50/50 and there's like 5 of them running around on each level. There's also an ice beast I didn't dare to wake up. If I descend lower, it will get even harder. The only decent weapon I found was a war axe but how do you even use it on an elf with -2 aptitude.

Use any other middling weapon. m&f or long blades recommended though polearms is fine too. Axes I guess if you're a HO.
Pick Oka or Trog. They help much, much, much more than Ely/
Get much, much , much more launcher skill. Walk a fine line between having one of the better one-handed weapons at like 1.0-0.8 delay. You poorly melee popcorn to conserve ammo. Shoot hard stuff. If it looks like it ain't gonna work, NOPE up the stairs and come down another or a hatch before it gets within 2 tiles of you.
You can throw stones and badpeddle to get enemies into explored space to reduce the amount of additional monsters getting aggro'd first from the monster shouts then noise of combat.
Post-lairish your launcher is sufficiently swole and your ammo gifts start to kick in. You'll fix up your defenses just in time then faceroll the game

Stronger weapons have lower proc chances. And all of them are reduced by monsters increasing ability to dodge you. Another factor is that you'll get badly fucked up when you miss or it doesn't proc. And enchanting your armor instead increases those chances

Curing, fog, scrolls of blink, regen spell, food etc. think of it as pan but every x turns ou have to rush to a fiend 3,4 tiles away and kill him. You dive to the end floor then clear out the rest of the level so you have "safe" placed to land when you tele if you're lucky.

Magic casters are actually easier overall in Crawl. Melee is hardmode because you're trading your HP to beat enemies.
Also DDA is great because you can become a goat trap.

There were two naga warriors too but the developers hadn't thought this really through because I could open the naga cages from beyond the open door with digging first making the fight much easier.

>sorcerer hangs back but I manage to hit him with an icicle when a path is temporarily cleared
>checking their dropped gear after combat, I realize that the elf fighter I had just tabbed through was using a longsword of holy wrath
I feel like I'm just a few unlucky rolls from getting wrecked, but vaults, slime pits, and depths are even more dangerous so I have nowhere else to go.

Ash's buffs are top tier, but so many necromancy and ice magic are incredibly intertwined (simulacrum + undead spamming, casting freezing cloud on your cold-immune army, dispel undead so you can actually kill other undead, cigotuvi's + ozo's armor)
