I'm a huge advocate for charge blade that fight. Countering everything including tremors makes it super fun. I still get hit by that turning bite or the fast lunge bite if I'm getting greedy, but Jho can be handled quickly once it is tripped. Takes massive torso damage when enraged.
There is an arena quest that gives c.blade practice vs Apex Jho. It may sell you on life honing once you realize how much more aggressive you become with it.

There's also the fact that weapons like the Swaxe, Lance and the DB have similarly ridiculous cancel-into options in that they're straight up dodges, though the Swaxe and Lance at least need evade+ skills to make it effective. It would still be a reasonable complaint if the CB were to also have stellar deeps, but its damage output is nothing special either, so people are buttblasted for no big deal.

Relatively simple to get into. Gunner weapons have barebones movesets that really just center on the shooty. You'll have to learn to stay at a certain, 3-roll-long distance from the monster to shoot at it and always try to stay in that range, and you'll have some dedicated upkeep to do with your ammo, but that's all the learning you need to do as far as playstyle goes.

There is an argument for removing the phial bust from the GP, it feels kind of silly to kill or knock out a charging monster by guarding against his attack. Another argument I generally agree with is that the GP just has too many frames, and it could stand to be reduced. What I find ridiculous however is the notion that the CB is this ez-mode always safe ignore all attacks weapon. Just doing a GP asks that you be really committed to that GP. If for some reason the attack misses you, because you stand right between the monster's legs as it charges for instance, then you're now in axe mode and probably won't have the time to GP the next strike. Also, all axe mode swings demand that you be really committed to the attacks, they're pretty slow.
CB is an easy and safe weapon to use, no denying that, but it's not ignoring MH gameplay design. You still have to pay attention, predict shit, have decent timing.

I finally got a sub 4, so happy. I had a lot of 3:30 and 3:40 limps with better fights where I didn't manage to stop him, so having this run be successful is a little bit of a shame since it's a big Zinogre and the bigger he is the more time he makes me waste on movement. Stopping the zone switch is quite rare for me, so having everything align and then pulling it off is really difficult.

Expert should be an incidental skill to have, it's not strong enough to aim for
Ice Attack would be good for an Element Phial Ice CB, but then you'd want +3
Evasion is not needed on CB, aim for more Guard Points
Crit Draw is bad on CB, not much to say
Artillery Novice is good, but lower priority than other skills
I would say Unshakable is unnecessary for CB thanks to GP on roars (and wind?)
LightEater is a fairly worthless, you shouldn't need more items than you can carry
I think useful skills for CB would be Sharpness+1 / Honed Blade, Challenger+2, Attack Up, and Artillery Novice, with situational skills being Weakness Exploit, Guard+1/2, Tremor Res, and Guard Boost.

Guard is quite good if you plan to GP at all (which you should) and I wouldn't really try and get weakness exploit because the explosions of impact phials aren't affected by hitzone.

The only skills I really aimed for are evade and light eater, everything else came by itself with the armor. But yeah you're right, it's not a good set for CB, but I don't plan to use CB that much with this set. I'm not aiming for the best skills, I'm just trying to get ones I like. Thanks for the advice though.
Can you even get honed blade without certain sets/relic armor? I'm never mixing a set no matter what, unless it looks decent.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that "situational" for Guard+1/2 meant "whichever's needed for the monster you're fighting," my bad. Weakness Exploit should still be worth it on certain monsters though, Rajang in particular. 8-11% damage increase on attacks is pretty great.

Honed Blade can be found on White Fatalis and GX Fatalis fullsets. If you can't make a good-looking mixed set then Star Knight is going to be one of your best options for most weapon classes, along with Garuga X if you like the skills, and Diablos X for GS.
