(repostan from old thread)

I love when shit works well totally by accident.

Working on implementing my "busted pipe" asset for the Tier 6 "level falling apart" changes (as an aside, the procedural pipe asset I've designed is really awesome, I'm loving using it as a background decoration)

I decided to implement a little "steam spew" particle effect for this pipe; the original idea was, the pipe bursting would expose a pit in the ground and cast debris all over the arena, which would serve to switch it up, so I wanted it to look like the pipe had ruptured.

Due to a typo in my particle effect scalars, I accidentally made the steam spew so enormous it carpeted the entire arena in nigh-innavigable fog.

I liked it so much I decided to keep it. Makes for a really interesting dynamic when fighting aggressive enemies like this; the way transparency sorting is handled in Mayhem League, you can always see when you've HIT the enemy, but otherwise have very little sense of where he is in relation to you.

I do still intend to have debris get scattered, of course, but I wanted to share the fog-fight effect first. It's an effect I intend fully to replicate across all 3 or 4 arenas I planned to include a "ruptured pipe" at Tier 6.

(reiterating from old thread)

on and off agdg dev here from Pacifica

Is anyone still aware of this game? It has been in the works for maybe a year and a half to two years.

I have made some massive updates in the past few weeks and I have implemented a prayer mechanic and updated/fixed a ton of shit. I'm two steps away from a playable demo - I need to balance and pace the game.

The user interface is improved and more useful, the different alliances have their own powers now, and the gameplay has been tightened up. Everything is generally better.

When the game is done, I'm also going to release a version set in the map of the Caribbean, titled Carribea.

>i think my game should be sold because...
>I want more people to play it
Then put the game out for free, and by doing so you have no reason to answer this poll.
>I don't want to sell my game
Then why are you answering a poll that reads "i think my game should be sold because..." ?
>i think its gives extra motivation to finish my game
Have we not made it clear already that those who need "motivation" to do something are already doomed? And if it does give you motivation to finish your game, what is that motivation? Do you want to finish it so more people can play it? Then make it free and don't sell it. Do you want to finish it so you can make money and survive off your skills in gamedev? If so then
>i want success,popularity and money
Is probably the answer for your. Except it's a rigged answer intended to shame anyone here who is willing to have actual success. It's still the only correct answer. Even if you complete a game for free and it's good enough to be played by many, you are now popular. If you sell the game and it's good and becomes liked, you will have success in the form of popularity and money.
This poll is intended to shame anyone who is open to being truly successful, but that's because it's creator is a holier-than-thou "I do it for muhself" type of person, like the kid who plays his guitar horribly in his garage and calls any of his friends who join popular bands or become professional "sellouts".
It's easy to put a game out for sale and then sit back and watch it flop only to claim later "WULL I WAS JUST DOING IT BECAUSE I WANTED MORE PEOPLE TO PLAY MUH GAME" but it doesn't stand up to even the slightest bit of scrutiny because it's illogical, and a lie.
If your game was a failure, it's because it was a bad game. If you put it out for sale, it was because you wanted money and success, along with it will come popularity whether you wanted it or not. Most healthy human beings want to have success.

If you put a depth fade node on the steam spew material opacity, that line on the ground where it is "clipping" should go away.
>>
>>122048178
You can't sell a game without an intention for success. That's like saying you go swimming with the intention to float to the bottom and drown. Stop being dishonest with yourself and you can start being honest with others. People who habitually lie 24 hours a day tend to be horribly unsuccessful in life and always attempting to shame others or exert crab mentality on whatever social group they're clinging to at the moment.

Whatever. You're trying to conflate success of a game with "I JUST WANNA BE POPULAR PLEASE LIKE ME"
You could have made popularity and financial success two separate options. Every other option in the poll is bogus for reasons already explained. Anyone saying they're selling their game because they want more people to play it is simply afraid of admitting to wanting success, because you've already conflated that with "p-p-please like me".

well, in that case you're pretty fucked until the 60 days are up.
protip: you as the creator hold all the cards in contract negotiations despite what it might seem like. they don't actually have anything without you and they're just trying to get between you and the money source. this is especially true if they've gone out of their way to contact you and not the other way around. next time talk them down to 30 days, or even 14 so this doesn't happen again.

Maybe instead of playing this game you should just admit that you're selfconscious about 2D? Stop being a wimp and go 3D. If you're afraid to because you're already committed to a 2D project, stop being a wimp and finish that, or start a 3D side project.

Yeah, it's useful. Also it's outdated. I haven't touched it myself because I don't really understand how open sores source control works, and I don't want to write an OP myself because I feel it would be biased to what I think is important. This is a community after all.

How to give an object a parent while in-game in Gamemaker Studio?

'set_object_parent' is supposedly obsolete?

I don't want the parent already set before the game starts because the player needs to choose his team first, but I want the player to be assigned to his team via parent object obj_red_team for example, by the time the match is underway.

I'm trying to avoid adding more variables to the if statement.

Here's what I want to put:

//(Slap Attack Left) If standing on wall object, and facing left, and RED TEAM is within melee attack distance, and slap is available, use Slap Attack Left.

if image_xscale == 1 //if facing left
and can_slap == 1 //if slap attack is available
and (place_meeting(x-100,y+0,obj_red_team)) //if obj_red_team is 100 pixels to the left
and (place_meeting (x,y+1,obj_wall)) //if standing on obj_wall
{
sprite_index = spr_slap_attack; //current animation changed to slapping animation
alarm[4] = 60; //cooldown for can_slap
alarm[5] = 20; //create instance of obj_slap_collision_left after 20 steps
}

But this code won't work until the player has been assigned to a team, and I want the code to adjust to whatever team is being picked, not necessarily just red.

This happens consistently with scripting. I feel like I'm so close to figuring it out, only to find out I need to add another step to the code, but that step needs another variable clarified, and then that one needs another, and it goes on forever until somehow I manage to chase down enough variables. And by that time I always have a huge list of 'ifs' in the if statement.
>>
>>122076726
I don't really see why you wouldn't want to solve this problem by adding another variable, but if you really want to use inheritance you could just make two classes derived from both player and obj_team: 'player_red' and 'player_blue'. I'm not sure whether Game Maker permits inheriting from multiple sources, however.

Also, you shouldn't use the rendering options of an instance to represent its state, such as you're doing now to test if it's facing left. Instead make a separate member variable and making the rendering options parallel that. It's less error-prone.
