You can not auto-cast Ancient magic with a Staff of the dead, so it will never be possible for it to be worth using if you intend to auto-cast.
It is a cheaper than the Staff of the dead and allows you to auto-cast Ancient magic with a great Magic attack bonus and defence bonus.

Okay, so it's completely justified to use a Master wand in those situations. If you're going for xp an hour, Smoke devils are the only task you should be using magic for. If you want the quickest magic xp in game that has some afk to it, Master wand is the way to go.

I figure the rune cost reduction will save me a lot in the long run given that barrage runes are expensive, probably not enough to cover the difference. But you've also got the damage bonus on SotD which means more damage per cast, so I figure the XP is better if you don't mind having to click a lot

Its just the amount of gp you spend for the rate you get is so high most people only do it for a short amount of time to rush to 99 then never touch it again. There are much more cost effective training methods to 99 its just not very common. i do use AHK but again you have to be really careful with it. like i said, my script is very very simple and i made it to function the exact same way mousekeys (which is allowed) would, but even then it's still a big fat grey area. my script requires input, too - the numpad, just like mousekeys would.

said, a giant grey area. There are no widely accepted community guidelines, and jagex has allowed the ahk situation to escalate so much any attempt by them to change them would require them to change the game itself.
Ahk simplifies skilling and cuts down so much time and skill needed. It cuts more hours off 200m all then zulrah. This is why hexis nerds refer to playing with ahk for everything as "not playing the game how it was intended to be played"
