I've done the "writing with a plan" before but I always get bored and quit. Now, I'm writing a lot more than I ever have. I think it's kind of exciting too, I never know what's going to happen next.

The main issue I have is a few consistency errors, but I keep track of them in another document so when I'm finished writing the entire thing I'll go back and fix them.

I'm making it a rule that something I typed yesterday, I'm not allowed to edit in any single way until I complete the entire story. I just make a note of it in that other document of mine.
>>
Did Sakura Beach 2 get h-scenes?

>I never know what's going to happen next

Sound the alarms, boys, this pilot's heading for a crash.
>>
>>121778265
Honestly it's a fine approach for a first draft. It's a great way to generate ideas and it beats trying to meticulously plan everything in advance, only to realize your characters don't want to follow your plans and fuck everything up.
All I would really suggest is to know where you want things to end up, because endings are hard if you don't plan them out in the beginning.
>>
>>121778265
>>121778570
Consistency errors are small things desu, and once I make a note of it in the document, I never make it again. It'll just be sorta annoying having to go all the way back and rewrite those parts. I should've also clarified, I do have a general idea of some of the endings and some major plot points I want to happen. I just don't know exactly when in the story they'll happen and I don't have them officially written down either. I'll get to them when I get to them I guess.

I dunno, I'm having fun so far and I'm actually enjoying writing now too. I used to have to really force myself to write just 1k a day. Now, I can very easily write about 4-6k a day, which may not seem like much to the more experienced writers lurking here, but it's a lot more than before and I'm actually enjoying it. If I end up failing, then that's okay, at least I tried and got some practice with writing.
>>
>>121779904
Even worst case scenario, your draft is a trainwreck that's unsalvagable, you can still use it as a map if you want to explore the project again from a fresh start!

Keep going, anon! Have fun with it!

>when someone estimates 4-6k as not much and you're still stuck under the 1k ceiling

Really though, it's good that you handle consistency errors that way, but their amount scales faster than the text volume. You definitely shouldn't push the planning to the point where the purpose of every line is defined, but it's beneficial to have the main plotline drawn firmly inside your head.
>>
>>121780226
I will not give up! I won't stop until it is finished, even if it turns out to be an ugly train wreck afterwards! Thank you for the encouragement!
>>121780474
I see your points. If I end up hating the way I am writing now when I am all finished with it, I will probably try the planning type of writing again. I just want to get something finished first and see how it goes. If writing like this is a mistake, I will learn from it. Thank you for the advice!

Holy shit its so good. I'm glad I didn't go for the conventional classical music most VN use.

I'm also better at scene direction than I thought i'd be. I guess its not all that hard when you have all the assets.
>>
>>121787945
I feel like arbitrarily going with classical music holds a lot of projects and musicians back. It's hard for it not to sound artificial (or stock, if going that route) and a lot of the time it just doesn't fit, so in general I really enjoy seeing music/soundtracks with more of a varied or outside the box approach. Who did yours?

>the conventional classical music most VN use.
I'm not sure I'd consider the music most VNs use as classical but that may be me just being weird about musical definitions.

I'd call a lot of it more 'elevator pop' if I had to call it something, although I can see a lot of people calling it 'classical' just because it's instrumental.

I'm curious if you can explain why your music choice isn't 'classical', if you can say without giving away your project.

Some people will snub you, it doesn't matter how much you achieve in life or the same area as them, or even how much you have to offer them. It's hard to accept it because of our ego, but it's also an unfortunate truth.
>>
>>121798074
how can you tell whether someone read their DA messages?

Some people may not know how to say 'no' firmly and politely so might find it easier to just ignore you and hope you'll go away, I dunno. If you're sending them messages in every possible way you may be creeping them out.
>>
I often don't know how to respond when people send me emails inviting me to become part of their 'exciting business opportunity'. Replying to tell them why their 'opportunity' is stupid feels rude and just invite them to continue talking to me and trying to explain why their idea is great and I'm a moron for not wanting to jump on board.

Your offer has been evaluated and declined. Do take in account that your addressees may have their own goals in life.
>>
>>121799690
Are these responses you've actually gotten from people? Just could just say you're booked with other projects, it's not like they'll know.

On that note, anyone have any interesting stories of would-be commissioners that wouldn't leave you alone after you declined to work with them?
>>
>>121780907
Just stick to it. It's obviously working for you, and worst case scenario, you can edit or rewrite it.
There's a lot of big and published authors that share your approach.
>>
>>121804030
It's a slight exaggeration, intentionally spun in the direction of the stereotype of men who don't like being told 'no' when they ask a girl out, but it's not completely untrue either. There have been several times when a simple "I'm not interested" has been met with "Can you explain why?"

Including from pushy artists demanding to know why I'm not hiring them for work.
>>
>>121798580
How long since you sent it?
I sometimes get a mail and give it a few days to answer so I can consider my decision and the way I carry it across in a way that's respectable to the other party's time.
>>
>>121805132
>Including from pushy artists demanding to know why I'm not hiring them for work.
Wow. I'm guessing their work is bad, not on time, or that they are just overpriced for what they offer. It's also possible their style just doesn't match your projects.
>>
>>121805132
>Including from pushy artists demanding to know why I'm not hiring them for work.

I've never done this, but I must admit I'd like to know why if I got rejected (compatibly with your willingness and schedule, of course). I'd rather you rip me a new one and told me why I suck - even if you had to tell me everything is so shit you don't even know where to start from - than to be blissfully unaware of how shit I am. I mean, if you told me that I draw arms really badly, I'd most likely spend all my evenings practising that, so I can be up to par.
Of course, I understand that it takes time to explain why, but just in the off-chance you did feel inclined to do so, it would be nice. Any chance those artists weren't being pushy and just wanted to know what they could do better in the future?
>>
>>121805841
>Any chance those artists weren't being pushy and just wanted to know what they could do better in the future?

Considering how bitchy they got when I answered their question, and insisted that I was wrong about everything and their way of doing things was right and all my other artists were clearly going to fail because of my terrible instructions, I think they were just pushy.

I'm sure it varies but it's hard to know when someone's sincere and when they're a parasite that you should never speak to or they'll go yandere on you.
>>
>>121806356
(Note - I'm saying 'they' here because it was a group with a solo contact point, not because this happened often. It wasn't CDS either.)
>>
>>121806356
>>121806457
Fair enough. It's a pity, though - it's pretty cool to get feedback from people who actually buy art. My experience is that they usually have a more pragmatic idea of what it should look like than even the few people who are likely to critique stuff on art communities. I think it's a lot more useful to let go of the idea that one's art is like a beloved child or an extension of one's self. I guess I'll have to come up with a disclaimer if I do ask for feedback so the potential commissioner knows that a) I don't feel entitled to their feedback and know it to be a courtesy; b) I'm only going to be grateful if they bother at all.

We were talking about length in the last thread. There aren't a lot of really long games and those that are are often padded out by other kinds of gameplay, making it hard to compare directly. KS and Shira Oka are certainly a lot bigger than average.

Started playing that BCM demo since I've never got around to it. Sprites are pretty ugly 2bh, but the backgrounds are okay for the most part. The random Japanese words in place of English is sort of annoying, if the games in english, just make it all english. It's not like the terms being used don't have an English translation, aniki=bro. Speaking of things being in real time, there is no reason for a visual novel to have any real time anything whatsoever. Don't do it. I don't care how clever you think it is.

>>
>>121829196
>I don't know why you're trying so hard to misunderstand it.
Man, I sure hope you're not a writer, because I'd hate to see how you'd respond to actual criticism if you're blowing up over "Your one sentence was unclear".
There's disagreeing with it, but there's also just completely attacking the other party.
That's just immature.
>>
>>121830159
And what that means is there's a lot of solutions to consider using in VNs.
>>
>>121828742
I found that effect interesting, but it only works when the options are clear and the time allotted to decide is sufficient.

If you're faced with a 'sweep the floor' 'mop the floor' decision, and you're sitting there going WHAT DOES THIS EVEN MEAN, and then unexpectedly the game goes ahead without waiting for you and 'punishes' you for failing to make a decision in time, that's very frustrating.

QTEs where you have to react quickly or something bad happens mesh very poorly with visual novels because you're in the wrong mindframe for a twitchy reaction when you're reading and following the story. If you put a sudden gotcha into a conversation, you have to expect that most players WILL screw it up. Make it part of the story, sure, but don't end the story there because the player blinked.
>>
>>121830840
>Make it part of the story, sure, but don't end the story there because the player blinked.

I don't remember which one (maybe sweet pool?) but there's a VN where you actually have to let the timer run out because both choices lead to a bad end.
>>
>>121830840
>Make it part of the story, sure, but don't end the story there because the player blinked.

For a fake example:

You're in a conversation with someone and unexpectedly some guy throws a punch at you. Your character is caught off guard. Menu options pop up with a tight timer.

If failing to quickly read and select the right option means you get slugged and there's a game over or a penalty to the route you're taking, that's bad.

However, if the options were something like 'block', 'dodge left', 'dodge right', and EVEN IF you selected one of those options it still makes only a tiny difference because the guy still had the drop on you, the scene mostly plays out the same, you jsut get punched in a different location... In that case, the auto-advance option is just putting the player in the character's shoes and giving them that brief burst of panic 'shit! what do I do?' without actually punishing them in-game. Still not something to overuse, but it's not terrible.
>>
>>121830713
You didn't say it was unclear. You purposefully misconstrued it. When talking about games that have things that happen in real time, no one would ever mention music or text effects.

Even >>121825496 understood it with regards to the system messages playing according to your system clock.
>>
>>121831232
>I don't remember which one

DMMD. It's in Clear's route. It's a neat effect, but the game doesn't really make it obvious you're supposed to do that.
>>
>>121831232
DMMD's end choice in one of the routes was like that. It even had a neat little effect of the choice things cracking and shattering.
>>
>>121831232
That's slightly different, that's one where (I assume) you have time to read both options and think about them before time runs out. I'm trying to draw a distinction between that and a QTE.

I think it's okay to have a story branch point where the choices are really clear, like if two girls are fighting and the menu shows up to let you choose who to side with, gives you enough time to make a choice, and then if you don't treats you as having been indecisive and lets the scene continue.

AJ Tilley's Highschool Romance is coming out on November 13th. I guess he dropped the word crossdressing from the title for reasons.

If your looking for recommendations from MangaGamer you could try: euphoria, Sweet Sweat in Summer: The Naughty Girl and Her Ripe Scent, Milles, Knight of Anal Tyranny ~Impregnated by Lusty Tentacles at the Ends of Oblivion~, and Cum on! Bukkake Ranch! ~Rear Elementals Into Wet, Horny Girls!~. And if you just can't get enough strong women getting violated, might I suggest: Valkyrie Svia, Armored Warrior Iris, and Space Pirate Sara.

I haven't played Bukkake Ranch and euphoria isn't out yet, but I can attest to the content of all of the other vns. They'll make great inspirational material if you're into those fetishes.

>Is this cage hell or paradise?

>They wake up in a white room remembering nothing――
>The protagonist Takato Keisuke and 6 others are locked up in these hidden white rooms. His childhood friend Hokari Kanae, classmate Andou Miyako, underclassmate Makiba Rika, English teacher Aoi Natsuki, same year Byakuya Rinne, and classmate Manaka Nemu. While still confused about their unusual situation, a “mystery voice” suddenly speaks to them: “A game has now started.”
>In order to escape the room, Keisuke is the “unlocker” and one heroine the “keyhole”. With an assigned act, he must “use the key”.

>After hearing the unreasonable and immoral requirements to win, Miyako gets pissed and snaps on the “mystery voice”. Suddenly the lights go out. The girls scream. The lights come back on, reilluminating the white room. They can see Miyako bound to a grotesque torture device.
>“Anyone who quits the game will die”
>Her screaming begins in tandem with the electrical current. With eyes wide open in fear, she pisses and shits herself. Everyone else starts freaking out. However, Keisuke seemed to be getting aroused by Miyako’s appearance. That was his secret, his urge to assault and humiliate girls.

>However, Nemu could see right through him and knew. Nemu takes advantage, forcing the protagonist to submit to him as she brings her lips up to his: “This is a contract kiss.”
>Keisuke was surprised by Nemu’s behavior but he wants to protect Kanae and decides for the sake of escaping, he will violate the others. Can Keisuke escape the white rooms and return to his normal life? Or will he hold back his own dark urges…? ―――It is you who decides in the end.

Is it a commercial game? From what I recall, only people who make commercial games need to ask for a commercial license. That applies to KS projects as well.
>>
>>121891030

For this game, no. But I'm considering, or more planning for expandability. Which could mean expanding the game/project to a commercial one. I don't recall the exact license but if it did have an SA (share alike) clause included, it's going to kill...

Holy fuck I do admit not having to fully understand the Share Alike clause.
>>
>>121892173
I asked him: the license is actually "Non Commercial". That means that you can only use it for non commercial games, unless he gives you a commercial license.

That said, he's also said that he's dropped support for it, so keep that in mind going forward - you wouldn't be working with an actively supported framework. I don't know whether there are actively supported RPG frameworks for Ren'Py, so I can't recommend any alternative.

In short, you're fine for a free game, but not for a commercial one.

I asked one of the judges from the grant and they sent me the broken down score - I thought I may share this, in case any of you intends to present your project to investors/contests.

In order, it reads: Project name, studio, team members, buiness model, orginality, intelectual property, art, pitch, points & overall score.

Basically, they LOVED everything about visual novels... except the prospect of how much money it might make. So my advice is really, really emphasize the idea that there IS a market for your idea. (Although I think being a niche of a niche brought down the score quite a little bit in my case).

A good majority of N+C games have english patches and the official releases we got back in the day (Animamundi, Enzai, Absolut Obedience) has very questionable content.
