I bet you don't even call your engine from executable mapped memory
Demo day devs, do you prefer a written review or a video one? I haven't posted progress in a while but still want to help my fellow devs
Thanks for playing the game. Hope you had fun but I guess not everyone was able to run it.
Anyways I'm expecting as much feedback as possible but so far I got none from here, I know there is not really a lot to talk about but feel free to post about anything you liked/dislike, or what would you like to see/see changed.

Make a fighting game, doing well timed and accurate combos will make your character slower and weaker, but the more you button mash, the more random and quickly that button mashing is, the faster and stronger your character will attack.

TENDER ARMS DEMO REVIEW:

+Interface/movement/sfx are very nice and juiced.
+LoS doesn't look like shit, unlike most roguelikes.
-Game crashed almost every time I tried to use a scroll on a door. I only got past the first sealed door once. (Error message: "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.)

I thought I was pretty clear anon.
Its probably good you didn't play the demo to see the rest of the sprites I ripped from. They're placeholder, its a demo. I don't have the time to make original assets yet having straight collision rectangles don't make the cut.
But still, you are right anon. I shouldn't have a Dynablade recolor as a screenshot advertising my unfinished game. How should I fix it?

>>121723493
You at least need to have a single unity scene with a single gameobject and monobehaviour attached to it, after that you can do absolutely everything via IDE.
That being said, Unity's greatest strengths are in the run-time debugging that you get from being able to mess with all the different components as well as the flexible asset creation.
Most of my actual game logic work is done in IDE, going into Unity to run and check that things work properly. Trying to make scenes and things by making prefabs with different monobehaviours and junk like that gets messy fast, in my experience.
Pic related is a thing I made for helping to test out cars.

SPACE DEMENTIA DEMO REVIEW
+The physics are practically flawless, I tried my best to get stuck in a wall or jump into odd collision angles and shit, and it always worked fine.
+I've been dying to play this game since it was only gifs of not-ultraman getting his skeleton ripped off his body, so thank you for this demo
- Crouching while jumping looks extremely odd
- As that other guy said, I'm unsure if I'm supposed to be able to damage the boss.
* I would have loved a bigger/deeper body of water to try to "slingshot" as you showed in some .gifs

boom, boot up the old Forge editor, get cracking on Anvil and it's maybe two weeks of spritework, tops, for a legit classic 3d sprite shooter, since the engine is right there rarin' to go and super easy to modify (and is open source, I bet the core Bungie folks would love hearing about a game on their old engine and probably endorse it)

You should pick a key other than slash for jumping.I'm not using an english keyboard and I literally can't jump with any key.
>>121725356
I'd have figured they died of old age but whatever, maybe they'd come out of retirementI thought the bungie core crew stayed mostly unchanged and that's why they fled microsoft to make Destiny after 343i got handed Halo (and why destiny is weird space wizard bullshit, kinda like how marathon and pathways are canon to eachother)is Marathon/Halo canon to Destiny? I wouldnt be surprised. Bungie loves that shit. I'm pretty sure their stupid Minotaur flash game that came in the original Action Sac disc is fucking canon to Marathon and Halo

I need to write some sort of validation function for my random road tile generator. It doesn't need to be too fancy, at the lowest level it'd need a way to parse sequences like:
road - end_of_road - n*empty_lot - start_of_road - road

>>121735434
Why are you being mean about my game
anyone want me to play their demo just say the word and I'll pop it on
Ok, dev.
Here it goes.
First of all, you game is looking really nice, I like the setting and the visuals, polish it and you might get some good stuff.
Now, let's talk about what's bad.
First, the camera. It's just bad, it changes way too quickly when you move from one side to another.
Second, climbing speed is way too slow even. Make it just a little bit faster and it would be fine.
Third, I'm sure you will change the attacks, but right now they are really shitty.
The sword is useless in comparison to the ice shots and even then, the shots are just a question of "keep pressing the button until it hits something".
Fourth, I couldn't get through the part in the tower you need to pass with the rope, the rope just didn't reached there, so I needed to go all the way back to your crab form to get the boots, I say you should check this matter.
As a last note, It's nice for the boss to have multiple attack patterns, I liked that, but I still couldn't beat it because of these fucking weapons. Maybe I am just bad at metroidvanias.
Keep devving, this could turn out a good game. I hope you find the objective you are looking for.
Random events can happen now.
You can also name units, the AI is more developed, and multiple AI teams will interact with each other.
Health, health bars, and combat is in the game.
Going to do some 3D modelling for the buildings now I guess, since I have to add in all the basic buildings to finish the AI & add in the tech tree's functionality.

You don't need to know math to see how that works. The sin function pushes the point to the left or right depending on whether the red line is sitting above or below the middle point (negative or positive). The cos function does the same, but for the y component.
If you just look at the cos component and removed the sin component then you would have a point oscillating up and down but not left to right, producing a straight vertical line. If you removed the cos component but kept the sin component you would have a point oscillating left to right instead. Combining the two components gives you a circle instead.I think

All right /vg/inas, I am looking to get into this with Unity but something is scaring me away, and that is textures and modeling which terrify me.
Is it hard, how did you learn?
When's demoday 6? I'm going to have something playable a few days after demoday :(
this guy's character sprites are all 10x10 pixels, but it seems like his environments are based on a larger grid (?) but at the same resolution or level of detail. How exactly does this work? Do you create/sprite out the tiles at the larger size (say 20x20) and then do 4x scale when you render them in-game?
When I look at tiles that are themselves 10x10 they look like absolute shit, but it seems like when you have a grouping of them they can look good depending on how you approach it.
So what's the sane way to handle this?

>>121757306
As good as I expected
>>121756397
I'm trying to figure out what you exactly you're asking.
I think the reason why the assets look good in the image, even if they look simplistic individually, is because of the artist's smart use of colour theory to enforce contrast.
It's very possible that the character sprites are at a lower resolution than the background texture. On a technical level, it's mostly irrelevant. Understanding visual art principles is what the artist does best, not making hi-fidelity assets.
tl;dr it's all in the colors
>>121757141

>>121756104
It's honestly just a matter of practice.
There are two basic tests for asset creation.
> Can I recognize what I'm looking at, even when the image is shrunk down and the texture details blurred?
> Can I understand the image even in greyscale?
This demonstrates good construction and color theory.
>>121757469
Because of scope and required skills.
I've done a couple of practice games like you mention, but I just see them as steps on the way up to games that I actually want to do.
>>121757469
Making a shit game good is what's difficult, regardless of ambition. Just practice the entire process (as in, not just starting and giving up half way) as much as you can and you'll improve over time.

You guys are right. I guess what I'm confused about relates to scaling pixel art. I now realize that all I have to do is make sure that the scaling factor is the same no matter what and my game won't look shitty (like it does with mixels when you scale things differently). That was part of my confusion.
But now what I'm wondering is whether or not it's better to base everything on e.g. 8x8 and just make extra tiles for connector pieces or to use 16x16 and simply not use all of the maximum space when spriting (as the guy did in the aforementioned example).
Pic related--tileset with 8x8 pixel grid base
I'm guessing it's easier to make smaller 8x8 tiles and place four of them than it is to make multiple 16x16 tiles with slight variations on one theme.
If I'm still not being clear, I'm working with 8x8 sprites and I'm trying to make my environment look good and not like a pile of shit (will post example of this in a sec). I like the way sprites themselves look at 8x8 but I hate how environmental objects turn out in that confined space, so the practical way to get around this is to just literally have four 8x8 tiles representing one pattern or object, OR to use 16x16 and scale them appropriately
>>121758508
get your eyes checked anon
>>121758196
It was a lot harder back then because your assets could only be viewed from a fixed perspective and your resolution limits were so small. Asset guys had to be a lot smarter and were forced to understand visual art principles back then.
Nowadays, you have people sculpting hi-fidelity assets that still look ugly. It's because they often lack the basic knowledge of what goes into good construction.

Just focus on learning the engine first.
If you're a competent spriter, then work with sprites first.
If not, then just use cubes and spheres as your characters/enemies/pick ups/etc.
I'm also just starting with Unity, and I can already see that it doesn't matter how good of a modeler/texture-er you are, because that shit will do fuck all if you don't know how to use or write script for the engine.
Also, I'm pretty sure Unity provides some free assets on their Assets store (I haven't taken a look at, so I'm not entirely sure about this).
TJust get the engine and look up some tutorials to see what you're dealing with.
Fear usually stems forms ignorance, so inform yourself.

what is a mixel
Someone mind explaing to me what in the fuck Entabrain is thinking? They came up with not one, but two RPG makers that are in 3D. but on the PC they just keep coming out with the same version over and over, essentially just changing the bootup splash screen.
The giant fucking change in MV is that all the resources are twice the size, not even twice the resolution, but twice the actual size, so instead of everything looking better, it just looks slightly more blown up. The entire fact they actually make people wait years for these releases that any other company would just include as a free patch considering how little has changed is already annoying it itself, but then they completely refuse to include an engine that they already made 20 years ago even though people keep asking for it just makes them seem completely detached from reality.
>>121759084
I'm willing to listen to you, I'm just confused.
Here's another question that relates to my confusion: Say I'm using pic related as my player character and I want a boss monster that is four times the size of my PC. What resolution do I make the boss monster's sprite at? Do I use 8x8 and simply scale the sprite by 4x with my sprite code? Won't that look like absolute shit because it'll be massive and have no detail? Or do I use 16x16 and use the same scaling factor of 1x?
this is also the sort of confusion that I have about my environment. It IS about resolution because it relates to how the environment will look compared to my character.
>>121758550
>>121758736
>>121758918
>>121759104
I think I see what you're saying
The thing is if you scale the environment up to 16x16 tiles that means the whole map size will be twice the size if you want to avoid mixels.
The characters would look twice as small if you kept them the same resolution.
Honestly I think the best thing is to scale up the characters and add more detail to them. You don't need to make them 16x16, you can make them smaller than 16x16, as long as you keep the pixel size the same it wont be mixels.

Keep in mind that I'm definitely not an expert, but it helps to understand the basic elements of art. Form, line, color, space, and texture. Understand them well enough to identify them whenever you look at a given piece of visual art. Don't just know that they exist.
To be more specific, a good asset (in a technical sense, not in a stylistic sense) has all of the following.
> Clear silhouette when in a neutral pose
> Larger silhouette is made up of simple general shapes
> You can still make out the silhouette of the object when it's shrunk down
That's the most general and universal criteria for a good asset that I can give. Things become more granular when it comes to things such as color theory and animation. Like them or hate them, Valve's handbook of Dota2 asset creation is extremely helpful and a good place to get your feet wet.
http://media.steampowered.com/apps/dota2/workshop/Dota2CharacterArtGuide.pdf
It gets more complicated as you learn more, but start here and slowly work your way deeper. Making something presentable isn't hard so long as you follow the three criteria earlier. Making something notably good takes practice and experimentation.
Just make sure you get comfortable with your art program first, whether you're making 2D or 3D assets.

Okay, here's another example. This is the game Realm of the Mad God with player sprites at 8x8 and the big black knight boss guy sprite at 16x16. Both are presented with 1x scaling factor. This results in a knight that is literally 4x the size (double in each direction) but the same resolution. If you made the black knight 8x8 and then scaled him 4x he'd look like absolute shit because the actual resolution for any given area of the screen is 1/4 that of the player character.
My confusion is basically all of the above applied to my environment/map tileset. I guess the best course of action is to simply use 16x16 tiles and subdivide them into 8x8's. I just don't want my environment to look like terrible garbage, nor do I want my character size to seem out of whack.

I dislike writing. With programming you have a set goal and you can achieve it with an application of effort, skill, and time. There's usually a distinct finish line in sight, where something is done. You can look back and objectively determine if it's good or not, usually if it does the job well and works for future revisions.
Artwork is also straight forward enough to do. You have elements of style, construction, depth, and so on. Put it all together well enough and you can get an attractive result, usually in the ball park of what you were intending. The more you know, the better you do.
Writing, on the other hand, is like walking through a maze with a map. Even if you get to the other side you have to wonder if your journey through the maze was worth going through the maze in the first place. And sometimes there is no map you just wander around like a clueless idiot until you emerge on the other side--or just give up, return to the beginning and start over.
How to make writing entertaining and engaging?

I suppose the issue isn't coming up with characters and settings and so on, but actually getting into the nitty and gritty and making those characters and settings interesting for the player. Specifically, humorous type dialog that is supposed to be engaging enough to carry player interest. It's like, "is this stuff good enough? Is it actually funny? If it's not funny, does it contribute something to what's going on? Is it just dull?"
I have other people working with me, so I can't just go all wacky and zany without them critiquing this or that. Which is good, in a way, since I have active feedback, but we also have radically different ideas about what makes stories good. Or maybe I'm just a terrible hack of a writer, who knows.

There is quite a lot of mathematics on game theory. A whimsical (but quite solid) starting point is pic related, by Conway of Game of Life fame, and others.
>>121764064
I'll give you a chance, anon. You gonna be here for a while?
>>121764343
That "unlikely" is solely based on the fact that 'combat', as it was asked, is way too broad of a term to consider an example of deterministic combat. It can be done with certain genres of course. But in any game you need to play over an over to balance, it's probably not the case.

The actual resolution is only 480x270, it just gets scaled up in integer increments. That isn't what causes the lag, its a number of other factors that I'm working on. Just make sure you're using Chrome (or Chromium). if it's still laggy, sorry :(, still working on optimizing it a lot.

ok well here's just osric for starters:
- please don't actually call him Goodfinger.
- I'm fairly certain chapters and orders are actually politically distinct, but I haven't researched that recently so I could be wrong.
- he's a coward and a glutton, but also a jovial, agreeable person? He's a knight, who would have been stupid enough to talk shit to him?
- he did nothing of note in the military, but he rose through the ranks anyway? why? if he's a noble, why did he even have to rise through the ranks? nobles are officers, and knights are at least cavalry iirc.
- now he has tenacity and grit, and in the same line as reminding us he's a massive coward. those are definitely not compatible.
- okay, so his quote definitely paints him as a glutton, so he'd be shit in the military, so there's no way he'd rise through the ranks even if he could. Useful idiots get shitty jobs and no promotions.
And also a BUNCH of grammar errors, but fixing those is a story for another time.
Basically it sounds like you haven't decided if this guy is "idiot noble who coasts on his heritage" or "cowardly knight who keeps avoiding death by running away from it" and currently just have both.

You guys don't know what you're talking about. There are tons of games with pixel art that have been released lately that did really really well. If your art looks passable after that it doesn't really matter and all that counts is gameplay.

Just because something's possible doesn't mean it's a good idea, Anon. Surely you should try to improve your odds, rather than just blindly charging in because you saw others succeed.

An Order is an organization, Chapters are divisions within it (usually geographical, i,e, the Malta Chapter of the Knights Hospitalier)

A knight generally has enough money to BE heavy cavalry but it's a title distinct from actual military role
>gaining rank
He mentions that he does it through pure luck more or less, and is actually shit. Though you make a good point with his nobility granting him the rank anyway
I think the idea is more of an idiot noble whose heritage means other people expect him to be good, but in actuality he is a cowardly fat fuck

Wait, he's not even landed nobility. He just comes from a family of good soldiers.
>>121760475
I went ahead and gave your game one last chance. Have your feedback.
Your camera is awful. Is way too easy to look at the ceiling, or at the immediate floor behind you(useless). I understand cameras are usually hard in 3d action games, but yours needs some serious tweaking. Go do some math and add some easing so that it's easier to stay in the useful vertical angle of the camera.
The combat is not really fun. It's mostly "enter room, locate enemies, find way to put shield between all enemies and me, walk backwards while hitting with sword". Yeah, there's some timing involved, and I'm aware of the dodge mechanic, but it boils down to that. Not sure how to fix that, though.
There's also little combat feedback. I know you were probably looking at M&B or dark souls when designing the combat, so please notice those games have HUGE feedback to let you know if you're hitting the enemy or not. Yours doesn't. Little "clangs" don't count.
Also, make the stamina bar way more noticeable. It's usually lost in the heat of the combat, and when it runs out it ends up feeling as unresponsive combat instead of lack of energy. A "tired" pose/walk cycle for your guy would do miracles. Also check out SotC stamina circle for a way better stamina bar that can easily be taken into account while fighting.
The rest of my complaints involve either the artstyle and the genre conventions, so I'll leave them out.
I wish you best of luck, anon. I don't like your game, but I hope it does well.

>If your art looks passable after that it doesn't really matter and all that counts is gameplay.

You should stop spending time on /v/, it warps your views of things. If you spend any time on Steam forums you'll see lots of young people really dislike Anime style anything, for instance. I've literally had people say to me: "this looks too much like anime, I don't like it". The market is huge and there are vocal groups of people that dislike lots of random shit, pixel art being one of them. If suddenly pixel games weren't successful anymore you'd have a point, but there are tons of games released lately that are pixel art and that do just fine. I'm not talking only about big well known games either.
>the entire industry is focused and hellbent on pushing visuals.

Uh, anon, I literally said I wasn't talking only about big games. Mentioning Undertale was clearly a mistake because apparently you can't read. Here, some pixel art games that did well lately. I found them by going to Steam, searching "pixel art" and sorting by release date.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/368230/
http://store.steampowered.com/app/364420/ (release 3 days ago, good for an opening)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/315860/
http://store.steampowered.com/app/280360/
http://store.steampowered.com/app/274270/
This was about 5 pages worth of "pixel art" on Steam (back to this year's July) and only the ones that did reasonably well to the point where I could live off of the money for a few years. So I dunno, it seems pretty fair. You could compare with other filters to see if you'd get similar or much better results. For instance, if you search for "roguelike" and you go back to July and see how many games did equally well. If you get 20 then it either means "roguelike" is in a current boom or that "pixel art" is indeed hated by a lot of people. You repeat this multiple times for multiple filters and you'll get real data on what the market values and what the market doesn't value.
If I make even one dollar off a game I make I'll be more than happy.

It's 2015, a couple thousand extra polygons aren't going to hurt anybody.
If you really need a lower polycount though, doing a good inspection of your model and just finding where vertices are redundant, then appropriately merging or deleting them works fine.
And keep a limit in mind when setting out to make the model. If I want to make a low-poly human, I'll set my limit at 1000 and divide that across the body:
Torso gets ~300, arms get ~100 each, same goes for legs, head is usually in the 50 range without hair, rest is divided between fingers and toes if the character needs those, as those are expensive.

What's the best framework for implementing a web interface for a game's server?
I don't really want to just serve HTTP straight from the game. I just want to give people a web interface to spawn servers on a box running the server software. I've been mucking around with cakephp since that looks like babby's first web framework, I was thinking I'd just scan for unused ports and run the server binary when someone requests a server host, passing in the map and whatever that the user selects in the web interface. But since it's geared towards sessions it seems cumbersome to implement tracking the servers, ports they're on, logging their changes and so forth, things that would usually be fairly easy. Now I'm thinking it'd be easier to just have a small C program the serves basic HTTP and administers the child servers. I don't really want to do that though because the last time I wrote something that serves HTTP it was a huge pain in the ass getting it to conform to the RFC and served really ugly web pages anyway.

I know you're not my personal teacher, agdg, but i'm completely stuck. I'm using RigidBodyCharacterController script and trying to get the current speed display on screen via UI-text. So i get the velocity of a rigidbody allright, but it always shows zero, whether i'm trying to get velocity or velocity.magnitude. Here's the script that i'm almost exactly copy-pasted from official tutorial for unity 5.
[code]using UnityEngine;
using System.Collections;
using UnityEngine.UI;
public class DisplaySpeed : MonoBehaviour {
public GameObject Player;
public Rigidbody PlayersRB;
public float PlayerSpeed;
Text text;
// Use this for initialization
void Awake () {
text = GetComponent<Text> ();
PlayersRB = Player.GetComponent<Rigidbody> ();
PlayerSpeed = PlayersRB.velocity.magnitude;
}

text.text = PlayerSpeed.ToString() ;
