So how much did the expansion improve the game?

I didn't like the vanilla demo, and reviews said beyond earth were mediocre....
Is it worth buying the bundle for $60 now? for single player only ?

And any word on the next expansion?
Or even the next civ game?
>>
>>121711383
I think it's pretty good now, and different enough from Civ 5 to have its own identity.

The diplomacy system is now the best it's ever been in a Civ game in my opinion.

The military units feel unique and are fun to mess around with. Domination victory and warmongering on higher difficulties is way more fun in BERT than Civ 5 now I think.

Still needs more leaders, space twitter tweaks, more unit upgrades beside 10% more combat strength, something like great people, world congress, improved wonders, remove affinity from techs and introduce a way of getting affinity points by acting according to a certain affinity etc.

Artifacts, diplo capital and agreements are good changes and so is the different biome with marvel quests, although they need to be more major than just some gimmick that you won't use most of the game. Looking forward to more improvements on existing content

The Hydracoral boost is pretty significant if you get it early
Vision all around the world and Hydracorals are now considered as workable tiles, instead of aliens/terrain
>>
>>121730285
Well in most of my games, hydrocoral gets rekt by the AI all the time and doesn't expand for me to make use of it's vision. I have no idea if the AI actually takes into account marvel quests when doing shit like killing aliens
>>
>>121730640
Thats why you get them early
The AI only starts their crusade when they actually have enough firepower to do so efficiently.
That's just before the first affinity units

>>121734426
What aspect of it you find tedious? I don't like leaving anything for the A.I. because it is pretty bad.

Tax rates you only change when a pop reaches a certain level, and since it doesn't grow very fast, you don't have to check many times

population policies it's equally easy to manage

ship design you really should do yourself since the ones the A.I. designs are awful and they don't incorporate the tech changes right away

troop recruitment you REALLY shouldn't automate, or else you'll be paying shitloads in troop maintenance for no reason

I just press F2 and check if every planet has at least 6 troops every now and then, really. I don't need more than that because the planets are never invaded since i have shitloads of ships protecting them. I just leave those 6 squadrons so the troop carriers can pick new troops anywhere.

Fleet formation - i just make a defense fleet for every system. Put a few ships in it, set "Home Colony" on the Fleet Screen, set the defense range to "system" and they'll never leave that planet unprotected (unless they need to refuel, but you will probably have that stockpiled on the planet already.). I build 1 medium space port for every colonized system to encourage commerce, resource stockpiling and just reinforce the position in case of war really.

Regarding attack fleets, i just make a dozen ships and set home colony where it's closer to the attack target. The way i play, i have to manually select all their targets, and that's a bit annoying, specially when trying to destroy 100 of mining stations, but i don't know enough about fleets to automate that part with simple strike-force fleets yet.
>>
Something i do is make a combat-oriented space stations with gas mining drills and put them on gas planets where there are fuel so it can serve as a refueling point.

Don't design ressuply ships, they're goddamn awful.

Research is something i never had trouble with. Just pick whatever you think it's best for your empire at that moment, i play with very expensive research costs, so i don't have to check that screen very often anyway.

Character locations is something i often forget to change, but since i use Inteligence Agents alot i never have an excuse to forget placing them where they should be.

I've always played DW on full manual, because i would just be watching the game roll out too often with automation on.

Later on i even turned off it's suggestions, since they were mostly shit and would just clutter up the screen anyway.

>>
>>121734426
Use build order and then go to the "ships" screen and select multiple of the ships "under construction" to a new fleet. That's an easy way to keep track of a large number of ships especially towards the end of the game, I was churning out dozens of battleships a year to win pyrrhic victories against the shak'turi, also, I automate my taxes.

Black spot sucks, scout more to the north with archer for a better spot.

>>
>>121740284
Theres alot of stuff, theres also a mod that adds alot of good things.
It might lack the scale of distant worlds, but ship designs are fun and life styles can be different.

It resources are more inline line with what you're capital planet is or another good one.
Can be a good thing to take someones key planets so they get fucked.
>>
>>121740007
What is this game, senpai?
>>
Any tips for Deity Domination? I feel like there are really narrow windows in which you can take advantage of certain technologies before the AI comes down on you with their oceans of units, like when Comp bowmen just come online, when you hit Artillery just before the AI starts getting aircraft, Just as you get Rocket Artillery, so on and so forth, but for the most part my conquests are limited to fairly local affairs, or side shows more or less. Like it's within my capabilities to clear out my continent, or my 'locale' on Pangaea, but anything more is a bit of a struggle
>>
>>121741035
Star Ruler 2.
>>
Okay, Distant Worlds autist here

I basically dropped the last game because many empires declared war on me and attacked several planets i had with enourmous fleet. I just didn't had enough military to defend my empire and it fell apart :(

So i started a brand new game with the Dhayut, since in the last game, the speed of my ships really annoyed the hell out of me. The Dhayut's special hyperdrive should make sustaining my enourmous empire way easier.
>>
>>121742064
You can always pay the AI to warmonger for you, or force wars to exhaust or slow down some runaways. AI doesn't have endless amounts of units, once you take down the initial wave, it's easy to push them back. Save units with upgrades as they can make wars one-sided. Keep in mind the AI is retarded at keeping it's units alive and relies on numbers alone with some technological lead in the early to mid game. Keep an eye out for what victory type each AI is nearing and choose your targets based on that. Don't spawn near warmongers Good luck

After looking at most of the sponsors in BERT.... I think Hutama is the most powerful one, the extra trade routes, divided among your colonies gives you massive amounts of growth and production. On Soyuz I'm able to have 1200 science around turn 220, have the best army in the world and build all the infrastructure and city buildings in every single city. By just having my new cities build a trade depot and several trade convoys thereafter, I can boost their production by ridiculous degrees.

Great game indeed
I'm playing on 1000 stars and 15x15 setup, 17 auto-generated empires, and sometimes, independent colonies create empires too.

Few, but strong pirates, Hard difficulty, agression set on 'restless' and very expensive research costs.

At the moment i've found 2 suitable colonies, and since colonization tech is already at 90%, i'm rushing to get them. They're the ones circled red at the picture.

I also found this Dlakar race nearby. I want to conquer them so fucking bad, but i'm afraid that mounting a fleet up to destroy him would be too much of a dent in my already damaged cashflow.

I'll gather all the defense fleets and attack him, maybe that'll be enough to defeat the dude...

Trying to decide on city layout here on Epic Diety Pangea as America.

Notable is a lake victoria to the west. You can get salt, spices, and lake victoria in one city.

Another is one river flatlands tile where you can get gems cotton and citrus (!) but would be forward settling the shit out of pocatello. Just south is a hills/mountain/river tile that likely won't trip forward settling but will not hit the cotton/citrus.

So confused about what to do.

From a game design standpoint they're the worst civilization in the game. They're RNG based. There are so many better ways they could have designed the natural wonder mechanic than 500 gold if you're first.

From a balance standpoint on diety in the vast majority of games their bonus is underwhelming because the AI hits the natural wonders first, and it's only a select few when they're OP as balls. I'd say they're just below mid tier because I just spain is a civ that loses quite a lot of games.
>>
>>121755705
Yes, he's contributing OC. He could turn off fucking caps lock though.
>>
>>121762579
Khan I think gets praise because they're the best pure military civ, even though they're mid-tier at best and it's really hard to come up with a reason to not play Arabia instead.
>>
Isn't it great when you share a continent with 2 Civs of sort of moderate aggressiveness, like China and Polynesia, where you know neither will destroy the other and then begin to snowball uncontrollably, but at the same time you know they're both aggressive enough to cheaply pay off into not invading you?

>>121768946
Domination is a hassle until Artillery. It's like before you've gotta contend with the fact that your units are invariably gonna be outdated, and the AI is going to have so many more of those more advanced units. It's so much better to just set aside conquest until you've got technological parity with the AI, or a really good opportunity reveals itself to you

Meh, all depends on the map.

II think you have to think of pre-artillery conquest and post-artillery conquest as two different things. Pre-artillery conquest is how you deal with being montys only neighbour on an island or a neighbour who built 5 wonders before the renaissance. Post-artillery domination is how you get wonders & domination victories.

Bushido doesn't really matter in my opinion, your main damage dealers (archers and later artillery) shouldn't be getting hit in the first place, and if they are hit, they will probably die. Meanwhile, the melee units you will be using to tank damage will mostly be fortifying and not attacking.

Super amazing pro Japan analysis by super amazing pro player.

Bushido is mediocre scraping alright. If for whatever reason your ranged units are taking hits their strength won't falter, although you really shouldn't be letting your ranged take hits to begin with. Your "frontline", which should be taking hits, will fare well, although if you're playing like not an idiot then Bushido really isn't anything more than a nice little bonus. Culture from boats and atolls is just sort of a flavour thing. Largely inconsequential, even on archipelago.

Samurai are... ok as well, I suppose. Their placement in the tech tree as well as upgrade/obsolete tech is kind of weird, although it gives you ample window to build a bunch if you desire. Great General II is nice but won't be noticeable unless you're smashing your Samurai into things en masse, which really isn't the recipe for victory most of the time. Shock I, with the Barracks and Armory, means you could have Cover II right out the gate in the Medieval era, which admittedly when combined with Bushido make for some very difficulty to to Samurai. The ability to build fishing boats is nice but finding opportunity to do so might be scarce if you're developing your empire properly. Useful if your navy pillaged some boats while invading and you need to replace them, though.

Zero are the best reason to play Japan because of how great oil is. No oil spent on fighters means more Battleships and tanks, ultimately. Sail in a fleet of battleships escorted by carriers filled to the brim with Zeros and you will have quite a strong navy.
>>
>>121784060
Ultimately you should just play Arabia. Double Oil should be more than enough, especially if you're aggressively expanding and taking other people's oil, and Camel Archers are infinitely more useful than Samurai, and will probably let you get that large mid-game empire to have access to lots of oil later
>>
I just had a thought that any Civs that we refer to as "The _____" don't really have a easy to use name for their land. Like we might say "Invade America", or "Occupy Persia", or "Annex China", but we don't have anything like that for the Huns, or the Aztecs, or the Maya etc.

Hey guys, Distant Worlds autist here

I'm playing on Hard, very expensive research costs, restless agression, few and normal strenght pirates that do not respawn and 17 automatically generated empires.

I'm playing as Dhayut, so i have very fast hyperdrives, helping to supply the empire with the resources i need and giving my military a pretty high mobility.

I have 12 colonies in 10 systems, and i'm not sure if i should expand more.

Is there a point where it's plain better to just stop colonizing?

Don't let the cashflow fool you, money is pouring in like crazy.

Spain is just such a fucking fun civ to play, usually you'll end up getting a free settler from finding your first NW, then have it settled and producing ridiculous yields and a minimum of 8 faith before turn 20. Then, when you get Conquistadors and Caravels, you can just search the world for all the other wonders and settle them with glorious expeditions, or take them by force from the dirty natives.

Settle closer to France and the Shoshone, that way you can prevent them from settling there and it allows you to settle the other land without them interfering
>>
>>121758987

You are america playing tradition so buying tiles should not be a problem. First priority is claiming land. Place cities 1 and 2 asap:
1) cow between sheep and copper, claiming truffles, copper and gems, blocking off monty and feeding the capital.
2) On the river by the two bananas, claiming citrus and cotton, blocking off pocatello.
3) On the horse(extra prod) north of buffalo by lake Victoria, claiming spices and salt.
4) in forest between mountain, buffalo and pearls for a second feeder city.

You can squeeze in more cities as you have 9 luxes, for instance on the copper hill southwest of your cap,or just enjoy the fact that you will not have to build colosseums and circuses

I would say to not stop colonizing. What are your victory conditions? If you think you are stable, go for the +80% or more planets only. Personally I don't give a crap about the planet quality as I play with low colonization range to make empires more dense (around .5 to .8 maximum) and I quite like a vast empire. Up to you really, but it seems you have a solid base. Reading your past posts you seem to have a good advantage as well.

As an advisor: Hold yourself against the pirates and see how things develop with other empires and expand a bit.

Ai is starting to build bigger and better fleets.
>>

Well, commerce has that discount on purchases which is fundamental for Venice.
The boost to great merchants is amazing too: merchants of venice already give double gold and influence, with that policy they are worth a gorillion gold + 99% Ally city state.

If i had to prioritize, unless the map is Archipelago or water heavy, i'd go commerce first anyway.

I mean, I only took the opener and those two points. The rest seem shitty. I got Big Ben too, so purchasing stuff is cheap.

I'm don't normally have the land to spam trading posts so the finisher doesn't seem as amazing to me. Maybe on a wider empire.

Why do i always get awesome starts (or, worst case, a good/decent start) with Venice, even at Deity?

Rolled pic related just now, and it's almost perfect, but the fact is that i had tons of great starts, almost as good as this one, with scary frequency.

My settings are literally Default:
>Deity
>Random map
>Huge size
>Everything else untouched

Does the bias favour rich spots to compensate for no settlers? Or am i just lucky as fuck?
>>
>>121831380
>Does the bias favour rich spots to compensate for no settlers?

It does, Venice gets the best spot on the map.
>>
>>121831508
Oh, that's really nice.
This makes venice actually decent in my book then.
No settler is a horrible penalty, but an amazing start + loads of money and Merchant of venice's powers make Venice actually quite fun and also good.

No settlers is still a huge handicap, especially at Deity, but i still love my greedy little doge.

What total covnersion mods have you tried?
>>
>>121832561
Venice is probably one of the most loved civs.
Maybe it's because it's one of the few AIs who are never a threat, or maybe it's Venice's comfiness playstyle.
>>

Brazil. Pedro is such a bro.
>>
>>121815391
Ironically, Suleiman has always been loyal and friendly to me in every single game.
I sometimes give him random gifts. i like his beard and belly that much.
>>
>>121815391
Zulu.

Agressive so it's not boring to play by them. But they're also very loyal and can be total bros.
>>
>>121811536
what is this
>>
>>121834313
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

Venice.
The AI can't play it properly most of the time, sadly, but the fact it can't settle and that its behaviour is pacific makes it quite a nice neighbour.

Regarding the playerbase, from what i've seen on civfanatics, here and Multiplayer, they always love the fuck out of their civ, even though it isn't that powerful, especially in MP games. They do tryhard a bit in wonderwhoring, but otherwsie they are the chillest.

I've been playing Civ 5 Gods and kings for a few years but I can never win on any setting higher than warlord. I always run out of money because everything costs more along with higher maintenance. Then the comp zerg rushes and is always able to build more units. What am I doing wrong?
>>
>>121835918
>What am I doing wrong?

Well you're not playing BNW
>>
>>121835806
How does one play Venice?

It's time to commit seppuku.

>>121836435
Tall as fuck, grab 1-2 CS's for internal trade routes/better spots for trade, set up trade routes ASAP, use gol as it's needed whole playing.

The Ai can't play it right because it falls terribly behind all the other civs who can settle, and its unit production is way subpar.

So it gets either killed by neighbouring AI's or it stays as a bigger city state.

Human Venice can compensate for the lack of settlers with strategy, but i won't lie, not being able to settle is a major drawback against the Ai, especially in a Huge map where the Ai can spam cities.

In Multiplayer you need to literally cover your capital in troops. Even then, if all the other players gang up on you, you are left to trade with City states only, and your trade routes can be plundered.

Also, better get that anti-nukes building before nukes hit, or you are royally fucked.

Hey, what 4x space sims can you guys recommend?

Is Gal Civ 3 the current best?
>>
>>121835918
You can successfully win a game running a deficit but you have to know how to earn an income. I suggest watching some of the deity LPs to learn the ropes.

Star ruler 2 is great, though sins of a solar empire might be best.

Distant Worlds is a grand strategy, not turned based 4x, I feel like a dirty slut for posting this in here.

>dat comfy feel when staring as a pre warp race
>dat feel when your staring planet has no resources but you roll with it
>dat feel when the next planet after your homeworld is aligned with said homeworld

Is it just me, or are Conquistadors pretty much useless?
>Founding cities kills unit
>By the time you unlock them they are pretty much worthless since by the Medieval era you've probably gotten all you want to get with cities
>Only 20 combat strength
Am I missing something? What is the appeal?
>>
>>121849370
You found cities to general into the opponents capital.
>>
>>121850017
What?
>>
>>121850127
In order to plant a citadel(using up a general) you need to be inside your own borders or 1 tile outside it. Citadels are great for holding ground or pushing into enemies. This is an advanced war strategy.
>>
>>121849370
they're basically a scout+mid level boat that can defend itself, and settle a city
you dont use them to go build shit, you use them as a purchasable or faithable settler that doesnt need an escort

Still needs working mod tools like CiV FFS.

Firaxis has been Hebrewing us out of fun lately.

If it wasn't for the civ community the previous game wouldn't have the tools to mod code or graphics.
