Anybody know what the problem is?
This was a really dramatic change that happened just a few days ago. I used to be able to just log in and invade instantly. But now I go for hours without being able to connect to anybody.
I downloaded Watchdog, and it shows me slowly building up a node pool (takes like 30 minutes just to get 10 or more), but even when I get to around 20 nodes I still can't invade anyone.
I'm human in Townshit at SL104 right now and only 2 nodes and nobody even attempting to invade me.
I tried changing my DownloadRegion parameter in Steam, but so far it doesn't seem to change much. Is there anything I can do to force it to connect with more people?

The rolling I think is the biggest issue
Playing DS2 and going back to one takes awhile to adjust to rolling, the 8 way roll is a massive improvement to 1 and you have to make sure you're more precise on which direction you push when you roll, otherwise it leads to many unnecessary deaths
Give it a few hours of fighting mobs and lots of rolling and you'll get used to it

The Gutter in 2 kinda flies under the radar when people mention good areas. It's always Lost Bastille that gets praised. I too like the Gutter a lot, I think it's probably the best designed location in 2. The darkness of it, the moving walls, the maze-like structure with multiple paths and fallbacks. It's great.
In 1 Sen's Fortress just left the biggest impression on me. Anor Londo is pretty but Sen's is so memorable for me because I find the entire house of traps theme to be very indiana jones. Anor Londo still gets the prize for the best peak with the S&O boss fight.
Oh, and I always roll females. I've had 1 male in about 15 characters.

Central Yharnam. It takes the convoluted interconnectedness in a dense yet efficient space of the Undead Burg and then multiplies it into a whole huge location. It was really brilliant to explore, plus I really dug BB's gothic aesthetic. It also managed to nail cosmic horror, which is rare, but that's another topic entirely.

Laurentius of the Great Swamp. He's just the nicest guy in the entire setting. He's so warm and friendly and genuinely cares about the player's well being.
As for my own characters I think I only ever did one woman, when I made a witch-like abyss sorcerer in DS1. All my other characters are old bearded men, mostly casters of some sort with a few pure warriors, a handful primary STR guys and just a couple DEXy warriors. Of them I think my favorite to play was my DS1 pure pyromancer. I wanted to see if it was at all possible to mainline pyromancies, so I stacked ATTN and health and used the Dusk Crown Ring to extend my casts. By AL I almost never used my blade, and didn't use a shield either. Just fastrolled through everything, with the highlight being a victory against Artorias in which he landed no blows on me. Shit was intense.

I like DaS2 the most because it accommodates dicking around more than the other games. You can teleport where you want when you want, it's easier to play with friends, and invasions are more frequent since you can be invaded as a hollow and you can be invaded after killing a boss. IMO there were a lot of small changes that added up to be greater than the negatives like relatively bad graphics and no full orbs.

I thought that was a shit design choice. I can understand how you'd like it but I hated how you couldn't control it. In DS1 you had to be unhollowed to be invaded, which had the benefit of opening up summons. It was a tradeoff of help in exchange for added danger and a player could keep interlopers out by staying hollow and accepting the limitations that presented, but in two you're just never safe, and I mostly found it fucking annoying.

The spell Soul Arrow was used as the test spell. The damage is how much damage Soul Arrow did in correlation to all the other factors. For example if you look at the last row at the bottom of the page you can see that Soul Arrow can do 731 damage if you slap on all that gear and such. Some spells/miracles mostly have no use of Magic Adjustment like Second Chance, so that might not be of big worry.
tl;dr- That chart shows how much Magic Adjust certain gear has over other. Insanity has the most power and magic adjustment potential out of all, but restricts your MP and can only cast Spells. If you're alright with marginally less power but the ability to cast both Miracles and Spells that output damage, then ToB.

I can't get into dark souls ii at all.
I played it when it first came out for maybe 100 hours, but every time I die and lose souls I can't help but feel that I'm wasting soul memory, it makes me not want to play the game. Coupled with the fact that I have the base game, not SotFS and so there are absolutely no fucking summon signs anywhere.
How do I get into this game?

Ok I just did some testing at 50/50 just to avoid spreading any bad info.
ToB can be generally better if you put in the stat invest, though at 50/50 it's kinda not that far ahead than Insanity. And there are some spells where the ToB is just flat out worse than Insanity even at 50/50.
For example I buffed a Crashing Long Sword +5 with Light Weapon from both ToB and Insanity and with ToB it was hitting for around 340-470 on counterhits while with Insanity it was hitting around 405-560+ on counterhits. With Ignite ToB would do more damage but by like 20 points or so.
So it depends on the spell. ToB will generally be the better option or the second best, also there's some factors with certain spell like Cursed Weapon where you might wanna use a Cracked ToB, but that's another thing. I apoligize for any confusion.

I heard people talking about the stiletto being buffable on /bbg/ and it made me want to make close range mage around it. Given the difference on light weapon and only a slight difference for ignite, I will probably go for insanity, especially since mana pool won't be an issue at all.
The other option would be to go with a hypermage, probably with NR and lava bow. That kind of build seems more suitable for ToB since you're not relying on light weapon and because you're going to have a lot of stats free from not investing in vit though.
