I would caution anyone, in any circumstance, from going to for-profit universities. They'll lure you in with the promise of a good job and approve you for loans at ridiculous rates while you're incapacitated with the promise of your dream career.
Trust me, if you're going to get an art degree, the only important thing is your portfolio. A graduate from Harvard with a shit portfolio will only be a Harvard graduate. You should go to the cheapest school that meets your needs, and I promise neither of these are it.
Full disclosure, I do game dev as a hobby, my career is in aviation. But a friend of mind went to for-profit schools that saddled him up with (no joke) $200,000 of student loans and he has the same job I do. I went to a state university and owe the school nothing after scholarships. Even without those scholarships, I would only be out about $40,000. The average endebtedness for my university is $22,000, so about 1/10 my friend.
TL;DR stay away from for-profit schools.

Art style question

Which of these do you guys prefer? Assume the primary color would change depending on whether an object is enemy/friendly/etc and there was a bit more detail.

I'm trying to work out a visual style for my game and since I'm a crappy artist it's either something like this or pixel art so I'm trying to go for a more interesting look.

So, why does pinging my localhost return 17?

>>
>>121564485
Well I posted my failed game tether 3d on steam, and people ripped it to shreds, then some british guy Jim Sterling, who makes fun of bad steam games, made a video about it and then I got a bunch of yes votes. My goal is to just wait it out and see if I can get it on steam, if not it'll be available on other platforms, and I'll just keep it out there for download for as long as the stores will have it.

>>
>>121563943

what happened to the assless chaps?
>>
>>121564823
No, and No.

The reason your ping is >1ms is probably related to the method you're using to calculate the ping. If the thread terminates before getting the result of the ping then necessarily the lowest ping it could have is related to how quickly the main loop cycles. 120hz (120 cycles per second) is an 8.6ms ping

You are messing with shit out of your comprehension.

FPS = Frames per Second = The Rate at which a single graphical frame is rendered by your video card.

Tick Rate = How often your main loop cycles = Every time the code of the server iterates through its execution thread and starts back from the top.

Depending on the engine these may or may not be entirely unrelated things, but at the very least they are conceptually different.

As another derail from the main game I got an idea:

Pic related. 2-player turn-based game. Center is the game grid, left and right - player statuses. The goal is for the left player (always starts first) to get to the right side or for the right player - to stop him (killing the opposing player works too). Every turn you can do 1 action - explore or move. Exploring reveals the targeted tile next to you without moving, while moving goes straight to it without knowledge of what is there. Moving into the enemy wins you the game.

Additionally, the tiles can contain items which would have an effect on how you move/state of the board - you would trigger them by stepping on their tile, which is why moving onto one without first exploring might have an impact on your success.

I'll probably try and make a prototype with an AI and see if it's any fun, and if so, probably integrate it into the main game. Until then, any thoughts?

Greetings All,

We wanted to take the time to explain the situation our studio is in right now and why the newest patch has taken so long.

So after the launch of AGDG we continued support for as long as we could (about three months) but it soon became clear that the amount of revenue generated by the game and the cost we had incurred during development was not going to be able to keep us working on it. We got it fixed up as best we could then shifted focus to some smaller mobile projects (and I got a part time job) and that is what we have been doing for the last few months.

It has been a slow process, but we have gathered up a new team and just launched a Kickstarter for a new project: DPT. The goal of this project is to provide a way to hire on the studio staff full time to work on ALL our projects, including AGDG.

I wanted to get the patch out before launch but got hung up on nearly a week of Unity 5 upgrade issues and had to shift focus to helping the team with the kickstarter. Now that it has launched, I will be using the next few weeks to finally try and get this patch done.

Regardless of Kickstarter success, we should now be in a position to offer some more support on our games.

Thank you for your support and understanding

I'm experimenting with the colors a tad, trying not to use solid 255,0,0s etc. to get a bit of a unique feel to it, I'll play with it some more.

I tried combining the two styles but they clash, which sucks because the outline style has a really nice energy feel to it, while the solid style has a more, well, solid feel. But the eye just doesn't like them in concert.

One nice thing about the outline style is I can have the outside be a different tone to the inside (note the orange one here, the outline is orange but the inside is actually red, which gives it a unique look)

I think I'll end up going with outline style.

Yeah, the one I saw was a poorly documented and clearly foreign, the guy knew stuff but it was just sloppy. The problem is I am not that good at Unity and game dev yet. All I know is that I need to raycast as in the pic I mocked up, and use multiply blending somehow (I'm mostly concerned with how you'd "darken" things like sprites and the background properly, as far as the concept goes). I think I basically just need to spend a lot of time with it to learn all the useful syntax in Unity which sucks.
>>
>>121568165
Oh, neat. This is gonna sound stupid, as I am new, but by moonwalk animations you mean animations with origin at (0,0,0), right?

What's a .fbx? By needed arrangements, what do you mean?

Thank you though, this was a good starting place. Helped me calm down.

Does anyone know what makes UE4 ragdolls glitch out? The ragdolls on the example models work so well but whenever I make a model, the physics asset never works as well. yes moonwalk animations mean that the legs move but its only walking in place

fbx is a file extension you can export from your 3d software it can export the mesh plus the skeleton and all of your animations in one file which is very convenient

i use action editor to save datablocks and rename them to "Hitting Animation" etc to differ them in unity

in marketing there's a group of early adopters you call your "evangelists" - Toby Fox's involvement with Homestuck gives him not only a leg up on a fanbase, but a group of fans who rabidly promote him for being tangentially related to something they're obsessed with, on top of it being a detail oriented game that panders to a very specific demographic.
There is no chance of you reproducing its success by following its formula.

I haven't played it besides 5 minutes, but it seems written for someone with basic writing skills, basic humour.

I do believe the emotional engagement people have it's that the monsters aren't just random minions but they're give at least basic personalities.

The last point I do believe is what makes people so invested into it, specially the genocide run.

It's not a secret, most good art that is popular have something emotional people can feel.

Remeber that humans are emotional beings and emotions are the basics of good art.

Normally having a baby fills this desire

But people that for whatever reason dont end up with a family then go on to create artificial reasons to exist to impress peers, or to get money

Because it did EVERYTHING right.
It might be a hard concept to grasp, but it did just that.
The flawed seams is only something you see towards the endgame, they are minor, and if you played it for that long; you are hooked enough to think any roadblock its a fun challenge.

The bad things about it(ROM hacking masturbation), also stays limited to something obscure, unlike games like Axiom Verge where it wants to masturbate over it, but its not well enough designed to do that.
>>
>>121571393
what makes human is a bunch of stuff, ethics, art, aesthetics, morals, politics, fun, emotions, rationality.

>sort of greater purpose
that's called motivation bro, and it's a good tool for moving your players to finish your game or keep playing.

There's usually diferent types of players, there's some who want to kill and destroy, others love competition, other loves exploration and inmersion and others love the social aspect and comunity building.

Good games offer something vastly diferent for each type of player.

There's also other storytelling tools you can use such as protecting others, being the chosen one, tridimentional characters, NPC having subplots, interesting worldbuilding, conflicted feeling toward ambiguos NPC, betrayal, admiration.

There's also common tropes you can use, and even bittersweet endings can be explained by having the MC acomplish his character arc but losing his story goal.

Storytelling is extremelly important for giving an emotional experience most players would want.

I'm sure the undertale guy had enough experience making homestuck as to create something special again.

>>121571402
yeah, I'm sure.
I could see even in the tutorial it was something special.
