Who here would have preferred a CA/TW spin on WH40k, and not vanilla WH?

The original DoW by Relic was great, Dow2:MOBA WH40k not so much.

Fantasy WH is just a snoozefest to me. It was so bad that even GW practically nuked it in the most recent installment.
>>
>>121544851
NOPE

NOPE NOPE NOPE

total war warhammer is every thing i ever wanted and fantasy is perfect for the total war team.
>>
>>121544851
40K wouldn't work. Same reason WWI or WWII wouldn't work
>>
>>121544851
I really prefer fantasy. We wouldn't be enjoying the Old World on TW if GW hadn't foolishly nuked it.
>>

>>
>>121545519
>>121545097
>>121544994

I suppose I was more referring the 4x, RTS, strategic level gameplay--not necessarily the tactical level RTT gameplay.

DoW: Soulstorm captured the 4x strategic level gameplay well; but CA has a better handle on it.
>>
>>121544851
>Who here would have preferred a CA/TW spin on WH40k, and not vanilla WH?
I prefer better Warhammer instead of both of them.
>>
>>121546028
I'd be okay with a galactic 40k campaign. but i don't think CA is the best choice for it.

I'd also be okay with more tactical level game play in 40k.
>>
>>121547438

Sins of a Solar Empire is probably the better base for 4x-type 40k.

Ideally, though, some kind of turn-based with a heavy military focus would be great.

I don't like naval battles, so I'd prefer they just play out like Paradox plans with Stellaris (modified dice rolls between assembled ships, no actual real-time control), but I'd love to be able to autistically manage ground campaigns on individual planets, and then get to play Men of War or Total War style land battles at the key moments.

So I've been burning my way along northern Germania, razed Flevum which the Saxons then colonized, sacked Angulus (would have puppeted them, but I need to liberate Denmark from Angle rule first), and now attacking the Varinians to annex their settlement, and establish a stable base of operations on the Baltic.

I'll burn it down as soon as I finish up over here, of course.
>>
>>121546295
So 40k?
>>
>>121540792

>>

Stainless Steel for crusading and heavy cav rape, Bellum Crucis for historical, Third Age of you like LotR.

RoDG is my favourite though
>>
>>121544851
40k wouldn't work at all for TW, DoW 2 was better in multiplayer than DoW through I agree the campaigns didn't have the same replay value.

I'm poor, but I really want to give Attila a shot. Would it still be fun if I only bought the base game for 25 Trudeaullars, or are the DLC necessary for a fulfilling experience?
>>
>>121554281

>being this edgy

I could run Attila on my 7 year old comp, that had only been upgraded with 4 gigs extra ram, a medium-tier ATI CPU, and a GTS 450.

I could run it really well after getting a $250 ATI GPU.

Attila is fun.

You're a faggot. Lots of people here play with Medieval, but most people aren't edgy cunts who will only play games that were released 10 years ago.
>>
>>121554605

DLC are absolutely not necessary.

The base game includes at least 2-3 good campaigns - migrating barbars (worth two or more if you pick different tribes, the Alans in particular play differently with plenty of good Sarmatian cavalry, including horse archers), WRE survival, and now the Lakhmids if you want to play with a desert faction with Sassykid tech and buildings, but without the total easy mode of being the Persian Empire.
>>
>>121554875
I tend to gravitate towards Heavy Infantry and "civilized" aesthetics, but I like to start small, will I find a faction to my liking?
>>
>>121555129

Hmm, you could get the Roman Britain mod.

Alternatively, you could try the Lakhmids. They get Persianate architecture, and I think they can get Roman defector troops, which are heavy infantry decked out in Roman equipment, and even capable of Testudo.
>>
>>121555129
civilized heavy inf while starting small is going to be hard without the DLC but the franks and saxons have loads of heavy inf, including based heerbann for the franks which are some of the best units in the game. Ostrogoths can also recruit roman units units from captured roman military buildings, but they can't build said buildings themselves.

>>
>>121554281

Atilla fixed almost everything wrong with Rome 2 (probably the weakest entry in the entire series) both stylistically and technically.

Vintage, vanilla Rome was good--but you've got your nostalgia goggles on a little too tight. It took a good year or 2 of work in the modding community to make a more hard core, historically faithful game than the original that was technically and historically satisfying.
>>
>>121554281

The original Rome game was MUCH more fantasy than anything historically accurate.

Three Roman factions? Ancient Egyptians in Ptolemaic Egypt? That's pure fantasy.

Went back to Attila.

281 fucking hours in, and now I learn that it DOES have direct artillery control. I knew Rome II had it, but there was no button in Attila, and it wasn't until I saw that it was linked to cinematic mode in R2 that I thought to look for a cinematic mode hotkey in Attila.

Thera is a great time.

It's a bare knuckle brawl between different eras and peoples from history.

Multitudes of various cultures killing each other such as mongol samurai, vikings, Romans, Ottoman turks, Renaissance Germans, Conquistadors, monster men, Aztecs, Indian tribesmen, slavic blood knights, medieval French, Scott-Irish clansmen, Moorish caliphates, Russian boyars, English pirates and more still.

I'd say it's worth a go.

that was the enemy army actually.

I attacked Rhodos and 7000 spears emerged and began moshing together into the pit you see there. It might have been because I had artillery, but it still doesn't make any sense. They continued to mosh in circles until my game black screened, as described here:

You don't have to micro in DeI, just gruppe all your kavallerie und spam charges at der thickest enemy blob.
>>
>>121601459
In my experience they fuck up when blobbed and are most effective when you keep dragging them through into other targets. I basically melted their rear and charged straight through to their frontline, and i did it by spreading all around them and dragg ling them as wildly as i could. If your cav is inside another unit and you tell it to charge another behind it, theyll charge through the blob killing anyone in their way, and they keep moving forward with the spear instead of drawing swords. Theres a bit of micro to be done.
>>
>>121602159
Since you have all the time in the world to spam hammer and anvils in DeI your microing is only saving you a couple minutes.

So this is my Pontos campaign so far.

So far I like how multipolar the world is. Carthage is huge, Rome is huge, Greece recently united to face the threat of Rome, all the major barbar cultures are still relevant, egyptians are relevant, and the eastern cultures have eliminated bactria and solidified themselves against the sillykids. Speaking of which, they're monstrous, which is awesome because they used to get rekt easy; they're my defensive allies right now but we all know what eventually has to happen. Right now I'm just focusing on conquering armenia, then I'm going for total control of the black sea-. After 80 turns of relative turtling, it's interesting to see how closely it resembles history without my involvement.

Current in a campaign where I absorb German lands up to the angles and before Heryncia. Not exactly sure what I will do with the rest of the nodicks and the alaman that are still posing a threat. My campaign finances also dropped from nearly 20,000 a turn to 11,000 right now but my armies also got big as fuck.

How do you
fight horse archers armies?

Do you think bottlenecking them on bridges is cheating?

I just can't stand losing my precious legions

>Sorry in advance for crappy resolution
>>
>>121637453
There's a reason Attila and later the Mongols caused so much damage.

You don't fight a horse archer army. You get wrecked by it.
>>
>>121637713
Why did no one ever develop a counter-tactic to horse archer armies? I mean, it isn't like nomads were new to people. The first civilization had to deal with them. The Romans had to deal with them. The Islamic world and Europe had to deal with them. How do you go so long with developing a way to defeat them.
>>
>>121637917

In Europe the best solution would be to force the horse archers into a bottleneck like a river crossing. Then put your best troops at dealing with missiles ahead to block the crossing, support them with siege weapons like the scorpion to out range the horse archers.

I tried to use some crossbowmen, but it would only take 2-3 volleys from the horse archers to even kill a formation that was in loose ranks.
>>
>>121637917
Because before the widespread use of gunpowder there was no counter other than getting lucky geographically, and even then that was sometimes not enough.

A bunch of Mamluks repelled the Mongols, but that was because they were a small force left behind while the leader went back to Mongolia after the death of the Khan.
>>
>>121637917
Maybe there was no real counter against horse archers armies?

Maybe choosing terrain (where horse can't properly fielded, wooded, etc) or strategic movimients could be a counter IRL, but in RTW engine (at least in Rome 1) horse archers can even tear armies apart in city combat, whicht can be infuriating.
>>
>>121637917
There were of course those speciale ones who managed to not only defeat but crush horse Archers armies.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman%E2%80%93Parthian_War_of_161%E2%80%9366

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Jaxartes

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han%E2%80%93Xiongnu_War

A balanced army, critical use of foot archers and a brilliant tactician can beat a horse archer army, apparently
>>
>>121624527
is that rome 2? what mods are you using?
>>
>>121639540

Crossbowmen with defensive palisades set up would be able to deal with horse archer armies when attacked. Without defensive fortifications, or terrain to force their movement it is just stupid to engage the army.

Though I suspect in reality that horse archer armies would haver much less troops compared to what a regular army could field. Since for every man that can ride a horse and shoot would also need 2-3 horses each. Can't go to battle with the same horse you use to pull your shit. Can't go through a long battle without another stead to replace yours when it gets tired.
