Hack 'n' Slash is still an incredibly important DPS combo. I've heard that the double-slash combo while in Sword mode is technically more DPS, but it has a pretty bad animation lock, and obviously you need gauge to maintain it.

Alright. Follow-up question: how good is the hack n' slash finisher? I'm liking the amount of forward movement that comes with it, that might prove to be great against things like Blos or Gore, but is the damage good enough to justify using it on stationary targets?
And while I'm rediscovering weapons I haven't played since 3U, how did the hammer change in 4U? Is it still golfsmash / super stomp heads all day or are there some cool new tricks?

From what I've heard (I have zero numbers to back this up), it has a really good motion value, and I've found in practical experience that it causes staggers quite reliably if you've already been wailing on a monster. If you have the time to pull it off without trading a hit, I think it's always worthwhile. Plus, you can morph out of it which is always handy.

You can survive a HR event enraged molten tigrex roar dead on with something like 511 defense. He hits harder than anything else I fought so far in G2.
does about 96% damage, yeah. but you can survive it.
If you block it it's only something like 15%.

Basically make it a long term goal you can chip away at. If someones shitty at the game but likes making good armor sets then they're SoL having to do masters test over and over. Another thing, don't make it the same quest over and over. Mix it up, hunting the same 3 monsters over and over gets dull.

I'm kinda stuck here, ok my HH set is as follows: HB, RS, E+1, and Maestro. I can either put on HG Plugs or Challenger+2. Challenger set saves me about 40 defense because of the garuga mask on the other set

Then Earplugs. If it's almost perfect, I doubt you really need the occasional boost that C+2 gives, and you'll have tons more openings. That's my two cents.

I feel like G is harder this time around. I don't remember having any particular problems with the transition in 3U. Now just trying to solo a pair of tetsucabras is taking everything I have.

I want relics in general to be reinstituted as a transmog/reskin system and post-honing weapon upgrade items to allow you to do things like get natural purple on weapons that wouldn't normally have them, boost raw more, boost secondary damage, awaken without a skill, etc (making non-relic weapons on-par with relics).

IG is basically impossible to use on some apexes without drive, since their deflection hitzones not only deflect mind's eye weapon strikes but also kinsects, without giving them extract, and frequently these include the red extract hitzone. GS is probably the best solo apex weapon. I'd feel better using a lance for it though because those movesets can be kind of erratic and a good shield is nice to have, as well as precise attacks that don't have a high chance of hitting something you don't intend to and glancing off harmlessly.

Just keep doing quests you haven't done and you'll get your keys and move on. If you haven't even faced Shagaru yet you're far from done, you still have like half of low rank and all of high rank ahead of you not counting the online campaign.

It's a fun game that encourages you to make and try out a lot of weapons and armours that require you to slay 3-20 of a monster or monsters apiece with each hunt taking about 5-30 minutes depending on how many people you have with you (or even more if you solo and it goes badly), so that adds up fast. Nevermind each monster is basically what you'd consider a boss in another game, and there's something distinctly satisfying about learning all of its ins and outs and shitting fury all over a boss. That part's what keeps me playing.

How to improve monster hunter so that their is a larger audience in the west:

I don't think you understand western audiences and AAA game design. Western AAA games often have non-slutty women not to appeal to wider audiences but to avoid controversy from smaller audiences that could potentially spread into a PR disaster for the game as a whole, since the masses are sheep. AAA game design in general is all about extremely low risk investments for moderate or potentially titanic returns, which is why AAA game devs are so slow to innovate and we still have the same cowadooties and elder scrolls we have had for years. They're safe.I'm all for less trashy female armour though. Not really muh soggy knee bullshit, I'm just a dude that likes playing both as girls and dignified, heroic characters. Open world would be cool too, and would probably actually make the game more popular with western audiences as well.

Oh fuck, I read that as 200+ HOURS, not HUNTER RANKS. Once you get close to the end of High Rank online, your HR "uncaps" and turns from an indication of how far you are in the game to a kind of experience level, though you only unlock some new quests every 25 or 50 ranks until you get to 150 or 200 (iirc, I don't remember which). G rank quests also give a lot more "experience" toward the next HR. You uncap at HR 7 and will probably immediately jump to somewhere between 40 and 80.

I did because I was insecure about being shitty when I started playing online, but by the time I started playing online I found I was way better than the majority of people I played with until I hit the final ranks (g crown) where I'm only a little above average (which makes sense, a lot of the people that make it that far have been playing a lot longer than me and have also played longer than me since hitting g crown). You don't really have to, though. By the point where you are you should already have access to decorations, which are useful in high rank and essential in g rank, so you should be set for a while. I recommend trying to go through the high rank singleplayer campaign before entering online g rank though since wystones, something you get later in singleplayer, are a big help in G.
So to give some context, I suck at greatsword. I still think I'm able to use it about as well as any random, but I don't have the timing and positioning down to land charges consistently on all monsters.
With that said, one thing I struggly with a bit isfrenzy. Namely, the debuff. I never feel like I have to -try- to turn it into a buff with any other weapons, it just happens naturally over the fight, and very quickly at that. But with greatsword, I get the debuff way too often. So when you have frenzy with greatsword, is it best to play normally, still going for level 3 charges on soft spots, or is it best to just get a lot of quick hits in whenever possible? Is the buff gained after a set amount of damage, or a set amount of hits?

600+ should be fine for G2. If you can't get that much, I'd recommend evasion+1 for tiggies, it's very easy to roll through their roars. Most of them at least, I have to admit I haven't fought g-rank molten tiggy.

Carry nulberries to reset the timer and it'll probably be fine, unless you're going for good times. GS should be sheathed most of the time anyway, so it shouldn't be that much of a hindrance to pop a berry when it's getting close to proccing the debuff.

Openworld is just a buzzword at this point and doesn't actually denote any improvements to the game due to the "open world". Way back when it used to mean there was stuff to do in every corner and stuff to see no matter where you went. Now it just means you walk for a long time to get anywhere.

I'll try that. As for the mechanics, is the buff gained after a set amount of damage dealt, or a set number of hits landed? I think that's the biggest issue, just landing a couple good level 3 charges on the head just doesn't seem to be enough to clear it, I feel like I have more luck landing quick unsheathe attacks on any part available.

There's a minimum HR (minimum G rank permit once you hit G rank, those range from 1-3 and then the special permit which is the crown) for each quest, so if the game let you enter the quest it may be a little ahead of where you are but not so far that it's shit you just shouldn't have yet.

Nah, I do too. It's relaxing to just kill the same monster over and over with a group, since the group means you have much more room for error and you can generally feel yourself getting better at the fight each time you do it.

Its based on the total motion values inflicted IIRC. Which is why dual blades don't clear it in an instand. Just try and land more lvl 3 charges and you should purge it decently fast. Bring some traps along too, those will probably give you 3 easy hits a piece.

Anyway you can get AuL and firestarter, which is ten points of fire resistance, while fire resistance (L) is only five, by eating meat and veg (you can get both with milk and veg). Your actual physical defence also impacts damage from elemental sources. Elemental is cool because it also provides resistance to blights though.

Because Zinogre's head is very unfriendly to most melee since it's in the sky and staggers easily which sends it out of reach. CB and GS can still hit it for high damage and actually benefit from the stagger, but IG can't, so you pretty much just hit the back legs instead. Ranged weapons don't have this problem of course, and they aren't bothered too much by him running around either.

Pretty sure poison is almost useless in G except as part of Kushala's gimmick, due to inflated health, consistent poison damage regardless of rank and the fact that it's damage over time instead of an immediate burst like blast. Blast is always building up, poison doesn't build up while it's already procced, at least as far as I can tell. If it did it would be great though, and it IS great in low and high rank.
Blast also isn't as good as slime was in 3U, but yeah, it's still good, and exponentially better if you use it in a group or on multi monster hunts.
Raw is almost always the best thing for soloing and status+blast for groups, and elemental damages only have their niches on a tiny handful of monsters that have severe weaknesses though, which I think is really lame.

It's not that it does reduced damage, it's that it does almost the exact same damage. With sleep, you're not still applying status while the monster is asleep, you're setting bombs and waiting for the GS to mosey over to the monster's head and smash that bitch's skull in. With paralysis the status doesn't last very long, so you create a pretty decent opening that hugely increases team dps, and then almost immediately start applying paralysis again. With blast there's no downtime whatsoever, you just keep applying blast to the next proc every time it procs because it's instant. Blast still deals constant damage even in G, but G rank blast weapons have much higher blast values so they also proc more often; Sleep's value is proportional to the highest damage your team can do and also procs more often in G, and paralysis is proportional to the optimal damage per second of your entire team and procs more often in G. With poison you gain like 2 to 10 dps over the course of 30 seconds to a minute, during which time your weapon is basically just a weak pure raw weapon, and then have to build it up and proc it again. 10 extra dps is tremendous in low rank and pitiful in g rank, and building up faster isn't a huge boon when you have 30-60 seconds' downtime where it isn't even building up.
I could be totally wrong, but I used a poison weapon for most of the game so I'm pretty sure it can't build up and proc twice. If it could it would be fine for hunts that lasted ~5 minutes or more to begin with.

What do you mean, like the reasons you'd do them? They level up to become the game's greatest challenges, they're great for grinding certain monsters for parts without having to cycle for advanced quests, you can gather nice materials including trading gratuities for the wycoon on them (though you can do that on expeditions too), and the two most important things, they're the only way to get divine and I believe true armour spheres, and they're how you get relics, which are the strongest weapons in the game and also some decent armours that often look nice.
If you're just grinding for armour spheres or whatever, go with whatever monster is easiest or most fun for you. Obviously if you're grinding for monster parts go with the monster you need parts from. If you're grinding for relics, look for a guide on which monsters give which relic skins (I believe the OP pastebin has one but it might not, see >>121568738), figure out which you want, then look for a quest that has that monster in the first slot, that weapon/armour bias, and ideally a second slot occupied by rajang (deviljho also gives you a very high chance for good relics, but takes much longer to kill than rajang, and if you're relic grinding you want to shave off as much time as possible).
Regardless of what you go with, try to get quests where the monster/one of the monsters is in the first area after you leave the starting zone. It's just more convenient.

Khezu has to ground itself with its tail to discharge electricity. It's probably too panicked with a hunter stabbing it in the neck. Plus even if it did you wouldn't be affected since the electricity wouldn't be able to reach the ground through you, and like the rest of its body you'd be protected by its tail. To hurt you it would have to do something that would probably hurt itself more.
Better question is why Tigrex scraping you against the ground doesn't turn you into hamburger meat.

Element Attack +3 is the single biggest damage boost to elemental shots, far stronger than anything else, the only problem is that it's hard to gem in as opposed to other offensive skills. All your points come from Tali + Decorations most likely because no good armor gives points in it

You need purple sharpness, so honed blade or sharpness+1 if you don't have it naturally. If your purple sharpness is low, razor sharp to go with it. Then you need "essential" skills for your weapon (things like quick sheathe / crit draw on GS, maestro on horn, etc.) After that, you split the difference between DPS skills like Challenger, or defensive skills if you feel like you need them.
If you're worried about getting carried, then I'd put a premium on evasion / defensive skills. No one will mind if you're doing slightly less damage than them, they'll mind if you cart, so given the choice between evasion+1 or challenger+1, go for the former.

You wouldn't be able to upgrade them later on into the best relics, but relics are generally better than the craftable weapons you can make from similar ranked monster hunts at any point in the game. In fact in my experience it's only in G where you're unlikely to get a relic that's even slightly better than the best things you can craft in that rank.
The fact that you replace them instead of upgrading them is just one of the multitude of things wrong with relics, but if you want the best weapon for any given point in the game after you unlock GQs it'll always be a relic.

That's the long and short of it. Monster Hunter titles have always been self-contained: they are what they are. Want monsters from previous titles? Too bad: you got what you got (and Raths). At this point, the monsters are a major selling point now that there are so many. For example, MHX's monster lineup is one of the reasons I'm so excited for it. I'd be far LESS excited for it if MH4U had all of its monsters instead.
So it's a business decision, but also a traditional decision, since it's just the way the games have always operated. You get new monsters in different iterations of a generation. I mean, they might change that sometime down the road, but it's just not how they do things now.
Finally done solo farming raging brachy for obliterators. What are the necessary DB skills to go with my new blast DBs? Starting off with the usual honed blade + razor sharp but after that, should I go for evasion, evade extender, more DPS skills like challenger?

A lot of people are going to say Challenger, but before you aim for that, make sure you can make proper use of it. If you're wasting the entirety of a monster's rage mode dodging or getting hit, you may want some sort of Evasion skill instead. HGE is also a sound investment.
If you play online a lot, C+2 might rate higher on your list of priorities, but still, make sure you can take advantage of it first.

Mycology is a meme from when Steak wasn't sold by the wycoon, it only gives regular dash juice, not Mega, ignore it.
Evasion +1 won't be useful at all, DB is all about positioning with the spin, you won't see any hits in your face, at worst you'll sheathe and dive but you can most of the time simply dash away.
Make a set for HGE, one for regular earplugs and one for none.

Mounting monsters underwater actually kind of makes sense. You could easily navigate to a monster's back. To balance it, they could make monsters super aggressive if you get behind them, give them unique moves to swat you away and such. I think it could work.
Haven't yet acquired the Steve weapon for my main (SA), but looking at Ping's, I've a question:
It seems that ticking Sharpness+1 doesn't do anything whatsoever for the Steve weapons for any weapon type. Does the whole roll-to-sharpen mechanic mean then that you don't need/don't benefit from Sharpness +1? If so, I feel like I should probably build it at least to carry me through most of HR and so that I can stop needing to use armor that gives me Handicraft (and so get different skills).

Gotta use those siege weapons. Eat for bombardier (moxie if you're fighting the event one), and blast his ass with ballistae when you get an opportunity. Try to bring him down as often as possible through mounting and dragonating, and then aim for three spots: The back until you break off the dragonator in his shoulder, his chest and his head which are weakspots. When he flies up in the air you can not only cancel his shitty aerial combo that will fuck you over but also bring him to the ground by using the two aerial binders that are on the ground on him (they'll start off as regular binders, don't use them for a while and they'll turn into aerials). The first time you make him cry ping by the shiny and everyone grab that, it'll be a one-shot binder you can use in the ballistae in an emergency; If two people successfully hit him with one it will bring him down. Use the dragonator on the wall whenever possible, and as soon as you break his back use the dragonator that falls out (I believe the game does a chime to let you know you've knocked it out, but I don't remember for sure). If you wait too long it will disappear, and generally when it falls out it will be when he's been knocked down by something else and about to get up, so it'll not only do significant damage but also lengthen the opening to wail on him. And bring dragon, fire or blast weapons or pierce HBG as the other anon said. I also recommend having one or two IGs to mountspam him, at least until the dragonator comes loose.

I just got PTSD from Ukanlos charging into a wall, me getting clipped by his foot, and carting because I took full damage from it.

Of those, small bombs. Anyone that has SnS is good for it, and shooting a ranged weapon ABOVE the bomb so as not to hit the monster is ideal if you're sleep bombing.

Also note that IG has two excellent ways to detonate bombs. I'm pretty sure you can't dodge in time if you do this but you can detonate them at point blank if you're doing something stylish and have to act fast by going from sheathed (which you probably already are, since you were placing bombs) to r+x, which instantly shoots the kinsect while drawing your weapon. If you're sleep bombing its pheromone can be aimed away from the monster and still in the bomb's huge hitbox to detonate it safely. It's probably the second or third best bombing weapon after SnS and maybe LBG (which has the advantage of being able to put monsters to sleep basically on demand).

I figure it might be better with EE so I can at least backstep towards monsters when they're running all over the place. With regular evades, if zinogre runs away to charge, I actually have to sheathe (which takes fucking forever) to even have a chance to poke him before he finishes charging.

I don't use GL but I'm pretty sure I've seen gunlances do the lance charge before. Try r+forward+x+a, that's what it is on lance. Makes you run fast at the cost of a lot of stamina, good for chasing monsters.
