Spirits/pets actually have massive damage reductions against any attacks that specifically don't target them, and spirits are really good for support, so it's a decent option. I'm actually having a hard time thinking of advice because I'm still adjusting to the fact that my pets are no longer glass buff dispensers. Just don't bearbow.

Perfectly viable, in that "going solo" doesn't necessarily mean "you're going to be without any help without joining a group" like it does in a lot of games. Events and things like world bosses are group-oriented, but you don't need to join a party to get credit for participating. It's actually rather nice that way.
