Backdraft is far from essential to his playstyle. It's a nice talent no doubt but there's no real choice on that tier. Which is another thing that would get changed with putting Chain Bomb and Mana Shield on the same tier, there would be an actual conscious choice in his build that might vary on team and enemy team composition. We wouldn't see the same cookie cutter build every game.
Also it's not about having problems dealing with him, every hero can be dealt with, but that doesn't mean certain heroes aren't too strong.

most assassins do need buffs desu. I don't like Blizzard's balance strategy of never buff anything that's not literally unplayable. Also Kael'thas is only good at damage. His CC is nothing special and he has no escapes until 20 and is squishy as fuck until 16

Dude, he's not gonna pop it unless he's in trouble. You blow some shit on him, he drops, he pops the shield and suddenly has this huge burst of HP while your shit is still down. Not to mention KT has a team that is probably going to peel and heal before you can burst through the shield. It's like ice block, except infinitely better.

Sonya gets kited by Jaina, doesn't mean her burst damage isn't completely unreasonable and wont be nerfed.

Well because the potential is the important part. Yeah you're giving up a lot of damage but when you use the empowered stun and aim to hit multiple heroes, it's gonna be worth more than the extra damage cuz otherwise you wouldn't be doing it.
But that flexiblity is another small aspect of why he's too strong. Again, I didn't say he was outrageously unfair, but across the board there are so many little things and edges he has over everyone else, the whole package is OP.
