edition

NOTE: The general consensus at /kspg/ is that you should torrent the game rather than purchasing it. The developer Squad is incompetent, extremely mismanaged, and is very resistant to all feedback or criticism. Furthermore, despite being poorly made, lacking a proper development team, years of unfixed bugs, and being in need of a serious physics and optimization overhaul, Squad has gone ahead and decided that they're just adding several new features, and have jumped straight to version 1.0 without proper balancing and bugfixing just to boost sales. With their performance to date, it's clear they do not deserve your shekels. If and when Squad begins developing KSP like the competent adults they like to play at being and stops acting abusively and manipulatively towards their community, we'll remove the above disclaimer. Until then, we as a community have decided it stays.

Understand that we here at /kspg/ don't hate KSP. We've simply grown bitter over the way Squad has dragged such a promising title into the mud, and hope that our input might help to keep this sinking ship afloat a bit longer. However, we cannot in good conscience recommend buying this game to anyone.

That is just a shitty explanation of a PID controller. When the guy says "where it isn't", he is explaining the error of the PID. The controller tries to minimize the error and therefore figures out where it is, from where it isn't (the error). That video tries to explain it to the layman, but fails horribly by making things even more vague than what it is.

Here is a decent video that explains what a PID controller is:

do you have any math or programming background? if you do you can just read the wiki.

if not, think of it this way. you have a sentry turret that is supported by a bearing and a motor. the motor allows it to be turned to face any direction. if a target is seen by a sensor, you'd need to turn the gun to face the target.

under a very basic control system, you'd determine the angle between the gun and the target and run the motor at full power in the direction the gun needs to go until it's at the angle it needs to face. the issue with that is that because the gun is accelerating, by the time it reaches that angle and the motor shuts off it'll end up overshooting the angle due to inertia. the motor then would activate at full strength to turn the gun the opposite direction back towards the target, causing it to overshoot again. this repeats forever.

if you've ever played Garry's Mod on a wire server you've probably seen a gun programmed like that.

a PID controller accounts for that by considering the gun's current angular velocity and distance from the target angle to prevent overshoot. to know "how" it does that you'll need to know math.

Liftoff. Damn, this rocket is fast, got 300 m/s at 4k meters
>>
>>120911820
>>120912321
I've been using PID loops in kOS to try to write a script that will keep a plane flying straight-and-level. I'll tell you how it works.

In this example let's say that we want a craft's speed to remain at 200 m/s. The fundamental part of the PID loop is to compare the current speed to the desired speed. The goal is to get the error as close to 0 as possible.
(Desired speed)-(current speed)=(error)
(200)-(196)=(4).
We now know that the craft is 4 m/s under the goal, and we can increase the throttle to compensate. Just using P does not require a time aspect because it is an instantaneous calculation. It does not really tell you how much you need to change the throttle because it doesn't have any idea how much the speed will change based on the change in throttle. That's where the Derivative comes into play.

The derivative compares two measurements of the error, the error where it is now and then once again over a set amount of time.
(error1-error0)/(change in time)
(4-1)/1. In one second the speed changed by 3 m/s and it's now only 1 m/s below the goal. It knows that if nothing is changed by the next measurement (presumably 1 second from "now") that it will be over its goal, so it wants to keep the ship accelerating, but not too much, so it will turn down the throttle a tad. This will only make comparisons one by one based on how fast it's approaching its goal.

Finally the integral is used to "remember" past changes over time.
(integral) = ((integral) + (error))*(change in time)
It's basically a summation of all the derivatives that have been calculated. Each time the integral is calculated it adds what it was the last time it was calculated, meaning it sort of becomes an average over time.

And, well, there you go, that's PID theory in a very simple nutshell. You essentially need to add all of these things together and it will give you an amount that you should change your variable by.
>>
>>120913720
The P calculates if a change needs to be made.
The I determines how much it should change by based on all of its previous changes (feedback).
The D calculates how much it thinks it should adjust based on how close it is to getting to its goal (feed forward).

More fuel/engine doesn't always mean more dV.
Setting engines to full blast at launch isn't efficient unless you calculated a good liftoff TWR.

Off to Minmus. I think it should be enough fuel to get an orbit, only because gravity of Minmus is so weak. I cold hold my orbit over 70km, by doing one quite easy maneuver.

>I started to put more gas at 3000, and at 8000 I had full power
You're missing the point. Your engines aren't as efficient in atmosphere as they are in space so you should maximize your atmospheric efficiency by maintaining a constant TWR until you're out of the atmosphere. The faster you go the more induced drag you generate and if you're going past terminal velocity then you're generating a shit ton of it.

>>120914816
>I stayed there for half a cycle anyway.
You're still losing dV by having a subspace orbit. You lost dV that you just had to make up with your next stage anyway. You basically did the same thing twice.

My guess is that it was a P loop but lacked I and D unless you understand calculus so well that you were able to implement it completely on your own.

This is my latest creation. I wish I could calculate lift and drag coefficients in kOS but I'm running into a lot of road blocks, including my speed of sound calculations not matching up with FAR's.

Yeah that's just a P loop then. Still cool though.

When I have a few days off in a row I want to make an instrument landing system using the vector draw function. I've already made a program that will draw a vector pointing in the direction of prograde and I can draw a vector starting from the end of the runway out to over the ocean, but since the coordinate and vector system is so damn convoluted that I'm having trouble tuning it to exactly what I want.

Here's an old video made a long time ago of an autothrottle PID loop. It's completely different from the one I posted a minute ago because this one calculates throttle based on the change in velocity where as the one I posted already attempts to calculate the exact throttle position needed to maintain an acceleration of 0 based on mass, drag, and available thrust over max available thrust. This video is cool though because it displays some of the inner workings of how PID loops actually function.

I set it up so that over a certain percentage error the script will utilize all 3 P I and D functions to get me where i need quickly. As it gets closer it drops the I until it gets within acceptable ranges and then it's just P. Staying in full PID close to 0 causes funky results like overshoot and windup so simplifying helps a lot.

I'm running the x64 version, because I've got some plans for high-res textures generation on the fly.
But no texture is used here, so no RAM required. probably some VRAM, though, I didn't monitored that.
This one does not impact the performance much, and there's still probably room for optimization.
Still, even with vsync it turns the game into a Furmark-like app. The GC does heat a lot.
As for U5, I didn't test anything yet, there will probably be some changes to make, but I don't expect too much.

/kspg/, you have been selected by the United Launch Alliance to go on a one way trip to a man grade floating outpost on Venus, and live there for three months until you instantly die of insufficient resources, premature balding or mexican certified spaceaids.

Luckily your personal chariot and savior of mankind and all things spess Tory "Bringing SpaceX Down To Earth" Bruno has allowed you to import a total of 2 things from earth to the extraterrestrial settlement.

What do you take along, /kspg/?

It kinda baffles me that it's been 4 years and the game still has no visible atmosphere.

5 or 6 hours.
It probably need another 10 hours to integrate it properly to the game and optimize it a bit (plus I'm still kinda slow to write shaders, I didn't know how to make one two weeks ago).
>>

It needs to be a physical object. Also the total size may not be over 2x2x2 metres and the total mass may not exceed 600kg, so no fucking Tory Bruno over.

When I first started. I read this http://www.hindawi.com/journals/isrn/2013/498765/ and thought about creating an ascent optimizer for ksp, but that thought only lasted for like 5 minutes.

Maneuver nodes and mods like kerbal engineer (which should be stock by now) make math unnecessary for ksp. You don't even need math to go to another planet, just a protractor.

They created those pyramids because they destroyed their planet, as the people of planet mostly had a male persona and held science over compassion, which caused them to destroy their planet through technology. Anyway, the pyramids they created were a way to transport to the next habitable planet, which was earth.

This sounds familiar somehow. Is this from that squeeky-voiced cartoon video about Jews being 7th dimensional creatures?

no, the fraud of claiming they are "indie" is the deception this general builds its foundational hatred upon.

They've made tens of millions of dollars, very little to none of it is actually filtered back into development, the goalposts are repositioned almost daily for whatever they have in mind. 1.0 meant nothing and added nothing. They've moved all the money to offshore account and have scrubbed websites that report how much they've made because of "gang concerns"

they also have fired the majority of the whites that got excitement about the game up, and have only hired two or three people with those tens of millions of dollars while claiming they spend nothing on marketing while buying traffic and maker videos and producing full marketing trailers for every update

oh also they're a marketing company, not an "indie dev"

and they accidentally announced the "definitive" version would be released in November 2016

not an indie dev, but that is the cover they use to obscure the fact that they are actually running a scam and a fraud.

Yes, it's called math and understanding how software development works, because it is a part of my career.

How's multiplayer coming? Maybe they could have portioned off 1m to make that happen? No?

>>120949875
poking holes without actually poking holes. You asked a question, I answered it. Fuckoff please.
>>
>>120949282

They had a good idea at one time, but the game's success is what killed it. The devs were adding great things to the game and had excellent things in the works. Then somewhere around version .18, squad went full retard. They "hired" some mod developers that did what could easily be about a week of work (on a daily 8 hour work schedule, that is) on the game. B9 was the best of them all, and of course they got rid of him. Their releases would take forever and not much content was added.

It is obvious that the money they are getting is NOT being spent on new devs to help crank out excellent updates and squash old bugs, and is just going into the pockets of the execs. They took one man's dream and gave him the boot once the game started becoming successful and hooked up the milking pumps to milk all the money out of the game.
>>

I am nearly positive he went to adrian and said "they're releasing everything in a year, we are losing a great marketing opportunity"

and then "career" mode "development" started and went on for two(?) years with little to not new additions, and devs like B9 that raised the bar too high were ostracized
>>
>>120950903

Proof of what? Them making millions? That can be easily verified by looking at the long-outdated SteamSpy numbers. Even if each copy of the game was sold for $7 (and they weren't,) they made well over three million dollars US. Adding to the fact that they're using a tax haven as their company's "Headquarters?" You'd have to be pretty dumb to think they haven't made millions already.

That Monkey Squad is a marketing company is nothing that requires any proof, nor is the fact that they announced the version on the Wii U is going to be the "Definitive Edition."
>>
>>120951052
>Please provide proof :^)
He and Bob (who died) we're hired in response to the great forum purge after Harv mentioned DLC on the dev stream. This occurred in April(?) I think of that year, 0.18 had come out the previous December.
>>
>>120951058
thank you. to me, it's very obvious that they are setting themselves for a "we would love to keep developing, but the big bag triple a labels have locked us out" scenario in a year, but they won't open up the IP, instead, they'll just leave it to rot on all the systems and pick up some long tail sales while continuing to sue everyone who might possibly impede on the IP

Funilly enough it has nothing to do with censorship but with something called the GEMA Klausel. Basically the GEMA is allowed to block any kind of Music video until someone is able to proof that it's their own music. If you're some kind of indie and put your video on youtube, the GEMA can block it until you proof you're the rightful owner. Which is easy to proof but still you have to do it.

At one time the GEMA even sued a kindergarten because they sang a christmas song.
