I have been playing since 1.0.2 and honestly they made most bosses piss easy compared to their old glory.
Eye of Cthulhtu lost like 1000hp and 10 damage.

The 2nd house is good because you have a really nice blend of stone bricks and boreal, you've also filled up the space inside without it being too busy. If you could change up the other houses a bit by replicating what you did with the bricks and boreal I think the village would look a lot better.
But there is no easy answer to making walls not look boring. I would put up bookshelves, dressers, bars, paintings, essentially anything to cover up the walls. For places that can't be covered up, try adding columns of marble or borders of pearlwood. It's really a matter of trial and error to see what works best, and I can't tell you what specifically would work.

It's a mix of both. Expert mode doubles enemy damage and increases their health, but it also adds new attacks to some mobs and to several bosses. Basically regular enemies become more tanky, but bosses are a lot of fun. The exclusive rewards range from fucking abysmal to invaluable. I'd recommend trying it if you feel confortable on normal mode, it'll make you learn better the game mechanics and force you to try new stuff in the game.

Tall gates are literally a castle portcullis. Fuck you a single zombie can kick it in during a Bloodmoon.
It's minor things like that which stop me from completely adoring Terraria. It's these little things, like a full ice furniture set existing but you can't make ice walls.
It's not like you could pretend that it's unbalanced. It's not "overpowered" to have a door that enemies can't kick in. You can stop them from kicking in a wooden door by placing a single dirt block in front of it. So why can't this massive, resource-intensive reinforced door be immune to it?
It's laziness.
We need those modding tools, and we need them badly. A modding API would keep Terraria going practically forever.
