/irg/ is a proposed general for indie RPG's, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, and the like. Games that are too small or old to warrant their own general.

xth for rip old thread
I think that later today I'm going to try Yume Nikkifor the first time.
>>120482952
Go into it expecting nothing but a walking simulator so you wont be disappointed.
>>120482952
have fun, anon
i'll continue playing lisa the painful later
Are they ever going to fix the mistranslated line in Off
>>120483150
which one?they'll probably never fix those occasional untranslated lines or the slightly questionable grammar here and there, either, so...
>>120483628
The important one at the end aboutHugo being the creator of batter and queen and not the other way around
I mean its an extremely important line about the plot and it expresses the opposite of what it should in the translation
>>120483715
hang on didn't they change it?
i can recall having read that that line was corrected in a more up to date revision of the translation
>>120483829
Well I found out recently when I played the game for the first time, I downloaded the v2 translation and the line is still there all wrong.
>>120483943
i could've sworn it was fixed for me
dunno, sorry
if it hasn't been fixed yet you can always step up to the task and fix it yourself
and maybe some of those , erm , other odd things which look quite french ?

>>120484076
i guess you'd need to find rpg maker 2k3 and learn how to load rpg maker games in it, or something like that
maybe rpgmg can give you some advice on how to do that? edit existing games made in rpg maker 2003, that is
>>120484138
Eh, Ill try to figure it out later If I feel like it.
>>120484226

I've tried Always Sometimes Monsters recently, after having had it in my library for a while. It's kinda okay, although I want to explore it more. I guess it's a nice change, seems pretty refreshing even if it deals with somewhat heavy shit.
Kinda want to try To the Moon, which I heard is very good.
Tried Science Girls for a bit, and it was kinda fun, I guess.
Tried The Sacred Tears TRUE and looks very promising.
One Way Heroics is pretty good, but I don't want to dish out that much money for the improved version.
Finished Eternal Senia and daaaaamn, that was very good while obviously working with very little. Some of the best boss fights in a while.
Last and least, I've tried doing a few runs of Eaten Alive and wow, it has to be one of the worst games I've ever played. Gameplay is bad, permadeath is bad (not that I even managed to die, mind you, but it's just bad in a game where the content is the same every time, it's just padding), protagonist is unlikable, and dialogue is edgier than a 4 bladed battery powered razor.
Anyone tried Sufferer? It's free on the maker's page.
http://www.foxeye.squares.net/product/sufferer/index.htm
It's about a girl in a swimsuit who fights monsters and pirates ARPG way on the island she's stranded on, while looking for a way home. Bears have inns and shops, because why not. It also has intensive underwater sessions, which are Fox Eye's trademark (if you're interested in underwater or have a drowning fetish, definitely check out the website, there's a couple more free games and some commercial ones that are rather cheap).
I find it rather fun, personally.
So if I'm making an rpg can I talk about it here? Or is there another general for that?

I played One Way Heroics to death- lots of fun there.
>>120498051
Yeah there's an /rpgmg/ general thread but if you're more theory-crafting, ideas and whatnot I don't see why it couldn't go here. Actual mechanics, scripting and such would probably go to the /rpgmg/ though.
>>120499803
Perfect! That's more what i was looking for since it's a game focused mostly on stories and timelines and stuff. I'll talk about it in a bit, gotta work right now.

Does EvilQuest count as indie? It's kinda fun, anyway. But I don't find it as funny as the maker probably intends it to be.
So uh, Heroine Quest. I guess it's pretty decent for something inspired by old RPG classics.

Can't find one and my Assembly editing skill is pretty much nonexistant.
>>120514963
did you download the sketch archive?
if so could you upload it somewhere? the link over at starmen.net is dead
>>120515218
such a thing exists?
So I'm playing Lisa the Joyful, I'm not looking for spoilers but for anyone who beat the game I'm looking for their opinion.
I recently beat Sindy Gallows, it cost me pretty much the last of my Rando Rations and Jerky. The merchant isn't available anymore and the only viable option to get more jerky I can think of is going back to Mr. Beautiful's world and killing all his pacifists.
I still have Dice Malone and Big Lincoln to kill. Should I just start over and try to preserve my healing items better?
I have to say this, the temptation to give into Joy is much stronger in Lisa: The Joyful. In Painful I always felt I could rely on my party members whenever Brad was withdrawn and Brad's skills still were effective. With Buddy alone during different parts the temptation to take Joy is way stronger; even after knowing what you learn in Painful.
Here I go.No spoilers please.

I'm the "I'm making an RPG" anon from before. Hi. It's called Band Practice.
It's a mostly story-driven adventure of a young Pup who wants to find his friends so he can practice some cool jams with them. But it's not that simple. Through a series of circumstances, he finds himself travelling through space, making stuff happen a lot.
You can explore the entire solar system (and a bit more!), finding stuff to do and things to see.
There's also gonna be tons of endings and unlockable stuff in subsequent playthroughs.
It's Band Practice.
Questions?

The reason why this general is a dead general is because a) indie games have a negative reputation to them and b) currently, Undertale is overshadowing this thread, which even though it keeps all the furfags and degenerates out, it also makes this thread essentially a corpse drained of its vital fluids.
Kind of sucks really, I really wanted an active place to talk about whether or not I should be streaming my Lisa playthrough.

>>120571780
First. I think it helps if you understand Brad's connection withLisa.
Alternatively, if you like putting together the pieces of past events and that feeling when you come to a realization as you fit everything together, then just jump in at Painful.
>>120572196
Got it. Thanks, pal.
>>120542859
It's entirely driven by story (with some combat, I'll figure it out) and the main goal is finding different endings. I'll probably add some puzzles in as well.
>>120573456
What have you gotten working so far? Have you made any other games before?
>>120576340
I have, but none of them are finished or on the internet. They were mostly fone to play with friends.
I have a build working that works for two planets (earth and mars) and a few moons, but I'm probably going to restart the project from scratch since it's a year-old build and some things need to be optimized.

I liked Brokentooth more than Undertale's final boss themes, but they were less memorable than most normal boss themes anyway (stuff like Undyne's theme or Mettaton EX of course blow most LISA stuff out of the water). In general both games have incredible soundtracks, Undertale's is undeniable quality but LISA gets bonus points for being amateurish and at the same time very unique and fitting the mood.

So for these here indie rpgs that we're fond of, I assume the traditional 'Dragon Quest' that RPGMaker does isn't exactly hyped for it.
We want weird shit and time travel and morality and all that? That seems to be what defines the 'indie' lately.
Or am I just wrong?
>>120644030
anything that's indie and memorable will do, i'd wager
>>120644030
>traditional 'Dragon Quest' that RPGMaker does
What do you mean by that exactly anyway? A lot of these games that we've been talking about have been made in RPGMaker and I don't think I'd consider them Dragon Quest like.
>>120644204
Fair enough
>>120644353
The very base of RPGMaker is to make Dragon Quest clones. Meaning a 'young hero finds friends and saves the world' wouldn't have the same impact that something like LISA, To the Moon, or Undertale (or Always Sometimes Monsters to a lesser extent) would have...because the games aren't designed that way.
They're designed to be an indie jRPG, more than anything. People have just gone into the 'weird or time travel or morality' mentioned above as the main theme of their game...rather than beating up monsters, getting exp and saving the day.
>>120641167
>Schuld
I'm still disappointed by the plot twist
>>120644353
i think he's referring to classic "go into town, kill thing, proceed" kinda stuff
>>120644204
to expand upon what i am trying to say
games which provide a unique experience or otherwise really shine among the sea of little rpg's made by people are what i'd say worth a mention on here
so even your traditional "dragon quest" like game might be worth playing through if it's unique somehow, be it through delivering an interesting atmosphere, to telling a memorable story, to having well-developed and interesting characters, or simply showcasing unique features you rarely, if ever see in games
>>120644823
Ah okay, I like that answer a lot more. Reason being I'm just messing around with RPGMaker for fun but I don't have the artistic or musical skill to craft something that'll have a unique atmosphere, so I'm going with my roots.
Hopefully the story will be memorable and the 'well-developed and interesting characters' is always my foremost goal.
So mostly I guess we'll just see what happens with what I do have and we'll proceed from there.
>>120644686
But RPGMaker is a rather powerful tool, and saying that it's only good for making Dragon Quest clones is like saying that a crowbar is only good for prying nails out of wood.
To expand on the other point you're bringing up, 'beating up monsters, getting exp and saving the day' and being memorable or good are not mutually exclusive.
Ultimately indie games by their nature don't have large pools of resources to craft a highly technical game with high fidelity. Indie games generally have to rely on a gimmick or innovation of some kind that makes them memorable (For popular examples think Undertale's narrative being novel and interesting for this generation of players, or how Minecraft found a way to allow people to apply their imagination in an engaging way.)
That is the reason why most of the games we might be talking about have 'weird shit and all that'. It's one of the easiest ways to have an impact on one's audience and makes the game more memorable.
>>120645487
>I like that answer a lot more.
well excuse me for providing a short quick response princess
>I don't have the artistic or musical skill to craft something that'll have a unique atmosphere, so I'm going with my roots.
maybe you can find some people who can help you with that on here or over at /rpgmg/
not saying that you need to be some sort of artistic master or mozart in disguise, though
really, i think it's important that in order for your game to shine it needs to be unique and show it somehow
when i started playing off i was intrigued by those strikingly colourful environments, the judge speaking in such an odd fashion, the weird and yet perfectly fitting tunes and the general look and feel of the game
undertale has an interesting concept of not requiring you to kill anything and instead offering peaceful solutions for basically everything
i think you can see where this is going
>>120644686
What are you talking about? LISA, OFF, Space Funeral, Hylics, Gingiva, To The Moon, etc etc etc were made with RPG Maker. RPG Maker isn't just for "making DQ clones about the hero and friends", it's a decently powerful tool for creating all sorts of RPG and adventure games. The fact that it uses basic DQ gameplay if unmodded also doesn't mean shit, LISA used a default RPG Maker battle system and it's completely different. It's entirely up to you to craft the feeling of your game with graphics, music and mechanics. RPG Maker is a game making tool, not a sandbox make your adventure game.
Unless your gripe is with the basic RTP resources, in which case I guess you have a point, albeit poorly communicated. If you are serious about making a commercial indie game with it, you better be able to make unique assets yourself or at least capable of hiring artists and composers. Ultimately though there is potential for a good game to be made with generic RTP assets if you can craft a compelling story or create unusual gimmicks or mechanics that are good enough to attract the attention of at least a small part of the indie crowd.

I think he's refering to the RTP

That's funny, because I like LISA's OST considerably more than Undertale's, but I do think Undertale's themes were better and more fitting when it came to the final bosses. (Bonetrousle, Heartache, and Waterfall are my favourite undertale tracks). LISA's best tracks were all in random battles or one-off areas- aside from Summer Love.

To the Moon is absolutely terrible, don't bother. Were it a book, it would take a reviewer of the most base rank to even bother penning it "sentimental tripe" in the local news column.
This fight went surprisingly well. Terry stayed alive until there was just one guy left.
Maybe using only required party members won't be so bad after all...
>>120667735
The music was pretty good though.

Is this the fight against the 4 guys?
>>120677589
5, actually. But yes.
>>120678751
Nicely done.
I remember the first time I played that with only Brad and Terry and went on to fight the big guy after.
>He can't understand how stupid you can be so stupid.
>>120679115
Thanks. I didn't even know you could fight them in two different battles, but now that you mention it, it does make sense.
I'd say that would've helped to know beforehand, but again, things went far smoother than expected (mostly due to Terry striking it rich with RNG, but oh well).
>>120679728
I always forget LISA's unique running away mechanics.
I mean they make sense, but you don't see them often.
>>120680089
I can't once recall a time that I ran during my first playthrough. That may very well change this time around now that my self-imposed challenge leaves me with 3 shitters for most of the game.
>>120680816
Nah, only one shitter. :^)
At least Terry has Insult and Fardy does good damage if he manages to hit.
>>120680882
Yeah, I suppose it was Insult that got me through that fight. And I've never actually used Fardy (or Percy), so at most I've only looked at him on paper and assumed the worst based on that.
>>120681062
Percy's skills are not bad, he has physical and special damage and a heal, but without MP he is totally useless and his stats are mediocre.
>>120641167
How can I find info on 14/? and &&? It's like impossible to search for either one
>>120681938
I'm starting to have hope in this run.
I'm also considering recruiting a bait party member or two just to use for the mandatory Russian Roulette bit because fuck that shit.
>>120683759
You should definitely do that. Beastborn and Nern are free.
>>120683957
I couldn't bring myself to use Nern in such a way after he proved to be a bro in my last playthrough. The ending hit me hard as fuck. I'll definitely pick up Beastborn, though.
>>120495502
You know this got me thinking, as stoic and deadpan as the Batter is, anyone else got the vibe that he was a ticking time bomb? Like the guy was always pretty close to completely snapping?
Makes sense given his monstrous form in the judge ending
>>120685648
How so? In the endhe still puts the world ahead of his friendship with Brad.Man that ending hit me hard...had Birdie, Jack and Olan. My main man Olan was the only one who could even hurt me for -75 damage and he was still stalling and crying like the rest. I killed the youngest (Jack) last and Olan first.

I had pretty much the same party, but with Nern instead of Jack.Despite Nern's decision, it was at this point that I was questioning Brad's morals, and even then Nern clearly didn't want to fight Brad anyway. And yeah, Olan is best bro.
Okay, I'm gonna be that guy. So Off won't run for me presumably because of a resolution problem, is there any way to get it to work without downloading something that won't make my antivirus shit the bed? That's what happened last time. Ran for 5 minutes.
>>120495560
To the Moon was okay. Just okay. It ran on a frustratingly tiny screen and it doesn't go fullscreen. Music was fair, I thought it'd be godly because of all the people hyping it up but it just didn't feel that great. The only reason I teared up at the end is because I sort of forced myself to.
>>120718807
Are you sure it's a resolution problem? That sounds a bit odd. What exactly is the issue and did you install the fonts it needs?
>>120719087
I'm getting a DirectDraw error and everywhere I look there's this Cherry person that says to use AnotherFullscreenMode, which I've tried, but that's what made my antivirus go nuts. I did install the fonts. When It did run, it ran perfectly, until, well, it didn't.
