Try swapping Challenger+2 in for AuL and get Evade Extender. Pierce wise, stick with Destiny's Arm. Normals can be done with Griscannon, but Furia's an option for Normal/Pierce (with RD+2) as well.

Rusty is probably the most disappointing monster in 4U.
I actually like the Ukanlos zone fight a lot, it feels very unique. But the Battlegrounds was clearly made for Gogmazios, and most other fights just drown in the space.
The weapons are the real oddity. They just don't fit in where they're supposed to be, which is made even more mysterious by how well-implemented, timely and popular the Seregios and Chaos Magala weapons were.
Hope they're honing their skills on unique weapon attributes in MHX. I'd love to see each Elder Dragon have a unique aspect to their gear.

Are you keeping your weapon sharpened?
Keep in mind that even though the hammer doesn't have a blade, your "sharpness" level is a damage and animation modifier. Let it get too low, and you will bounce off of hard places on the monster.
With this exception, there is no other way for a monster to become resistant to your attacks, as far as their health base goes.
Second, get to know the places Qurupeco cannot visit. It has been a while since I've played any 3rd gen game, but there is no monster that can exist in EVERY zone on a map. Get to know where a monster won't go, and where is sleeps, and you will have a much easier time when paint runs out.
Keep at it. Everyone has that experience in their first MH game.
And please upgrade your weapon constantly. Even if it means going out of your way to hunt one more jaggi, pure damage increase is the #1 route to success aside from gitting gud.

I genuinely believe Monster Hunter has mostly fair mechanics, and most bullshit can be avoided or countered. But Rajang has some of the dumbfucking mechanics shoved into a single monster that I've ever seen. It's like they decided on a cool monster whose gimmick is just being fucking mad all the time, then started piling moves on him. And just kept piling more shit he can throw at you over and over without knowing when to stop.

Circle to the left. Though his backhop hitting you forward is bullshit, but Rajang is easy as hell to predict.

Run towards the shadow, then away after the first bounce. He'll land right next to you, primed for reaming.
The only time I'm afraid when hunting Rajang is when I'm online and hunting him in a group. That's when his fucking mouth beam is sorta unpredictable.
I still have trouble trying to gauge S Zinogre's dragon bugs will go, and that's also hard to predict online.
