Lack of content outside competing for gyms and collecting pokemon, which the game encourages you to train and put in a gym.
The game heavily favours the people who specifically put time and money aside for it. You spend money, you get more pokemon, your pokemon get stronger, you level up and find stronger pokemon, you get more of your pokemon into gyms, you get more stardust/pokecoins in return. If you didn't get to the top during the first week of launch, you'll never make it.
Normally I wouldn't mind, but there is literally shit all else to do other than collect pokemon and challenge gyms, and the collecting pokemon part is getting pretty boring.

I only still play Pokemon for PvP. Even if they did implement it it'd be more of a chore grinding for teams than it is in a mainline game. Played it for ~2-3 days and got bored with it. The gameplay, if you can even call what's there that, is so fucking shallow, gyms aren't fun because the combat system is trash. The AR novelty wore off pretty quick.

The bug has been present for over 4 days now, that's 100+ hours, and not a fucking peep from Niantic about it. I played it a little bit and I think the popularity will be short-lived. Unless you live in the middle of a huge city (and not even in dense suburbs), there isn't a lot of close Pokemon stuff like gyms or stops that doesn't require a ton of walking or driving to get to.
You mostly catch the same pokemon in your local area, and after you've seen 10 rattatas and pidgeys, it just isn't that cool.
Couple that with the fact that you are competing with the biggest, most autistic, poop-socking fanbase in existence, as a casual player you will never come close to owning a gym or any of the crap like that.
The game is a really fun idea, but lacking in execution unless you are fanatically devoted to it.

I am a 308 pounds male who works from home and doesn't have any friends so never have any reason to go outside. Pokemon Go has given me a reason to get out of my chair and go out into the world. I am 308 pounds and started playing Pokemon Go on the 11th July 2016 and every day since then I have walked 5km+ and according to my "Fit Bit" done well over 10,000 steps everyday. I'm put too much time and effort into restarting. I just got back home from playing pokemon go with my friends, caught a bunch of pokemon tonight and travelled around the town with my friends going from lure to lure, hatched my 10km egg tonight too which had an electabuzz in it. It's even worse than that. High levels still see nothing but hordes of Pidgeys and Rattatta. I'm about to just give up because while I understand the need for shitmon, I'm just cannot take getting the same 5 Pokemon over and over and over and over. There might be a 150 Pokemon in gen 1, but there are only 50 Pokemon in my area and most of them are rare outside of the common 5 or 6.

As far as Pokemon nostalgia, there are plenty of other options with varying amounts of depth so I think i'm good there.

Because Pokemon Go is a great way to get outside and meet new people. I like to go for walks, but being able to catch pokemon and chat with fellow trainers while I'm walking makes the whole experience that much better. I've gotten into the habit of getting up early to go for a morning hunt and then going out again around 9 or 10 at night for my second hunt to catch the pokemon that only spawn at night. I've only been doing this for a week and I already feel a lot better physically than I did before. Exercise and fresh air are good for you.

I'm 30, and I've seen people of all ages playing this game. Everyone I've seen has been friendly and outgoing, at the very least asking what team you're on, while others actually make conversation. Hell, this morning a guy tapped me on the shoulder while I was doing a gym battle and asked what team I was on. When I told him "blue" he got hyped up and gave me a high five, and then said he and the group he was with would have the gym on lock down all day because they were doing something at the church where the gym was located.
Little interactions like that are fun.

honestly I think Pokemon Go has a lot of potential if they handle it well
first would be making it more stable of course, its clunky as fuck and crashes especially on older phones.
second would be improving the leveling process, make it so you don't need to catch a billion zubat to level up but actually involve battling and leveling your pokemon as a way to level;
maybe a team level and a trainer level, trainer level limits how high lvl Pokemon will listen to you (similar to the games with badges) and team level is the collective level of your team of 6 pokemon, all others are send to your poke-bank (basically you can star 6 pokemon and these are the only ones you can battle and interact with at a time)
third would be just a better spread of pokemon in general
a rural trail or a park should have lots of grass/rock types or whatever you would expect to find in a regular pokemon game
an urban area should have different types and so forth
lastly would be battling, this is desperately needed, gyms can be expanded a bit but battles outside would improve this game immensely, especially if you can set your game to some sort of "pvp" mode where if you remain in one area you will automatically battle anyone who comes around.
