ITT underrated games/hidden gems. Post shit worth checking out that people don't know/play.
too expensive on steam for an old game

How do I get gud at these games? I mean I used to build towns on empty maps as a kid, but whenever I tried to actually play against the AI I got my shit kicked in

pshhh...nothin personal kid
What's the best city builder RTS game?
I think it's Tiberian Sun.
>>345452394
Name of the game?

>>345452346
I knew this board is young, but holy shit, thats not settlers 2, you morons
I wanna okay a city builder but do not wanna deal with tedious micro management.
2070 was so fucking good but having to populate different islands to make wine and salad made me uninstall the game.
>>345452973
Dominions 4Prepare to summon suns to scroch the land, accelerate the whole world so every unit starts aging faster getting all sorts of nasty attributes, prepare to freeze the seas so the underwater nations can't get out or in, preapre to summon giant globs of dead bodies that can go out of control and literally take over the entire map because they end up unkillable, preapre to make generals that can with the help of some magical artifacts take on on entire armies.
>>345452973
Looks like some Dominions 4
>>345453063
settlers 4 came out in 2001, if you were 10 when you played it you would be 25
>>345453542
Oh god yes, I just wish there was more variety to it. Once you go through the tech tree a couple of times you're pretty much building up the same shit for every mission and basically doing the same stuff. Oh and the combat is clunky as hell but at least the game gives peaceful alternatives in most levels
>>345453661
yup, but there is no denying the game is top tiercomfy
>>345453267
i am older than that
>>345452346
how do I get good at Settlers?

>>345452579
If you take a tower (or take back one of your own) it seems like AI will then attack you relentlessly so don't do it till you're ready. Also figure out how many towers you need to spam along side each other to deter AI from agroing you. Bit cheap and can get boring, I'm sure the korean esports scene does it differently.

Nah, Enemy Nations.
Industry Gaint 2 is a great comfy economy management game with a superb soundtrack.

Damn... I made small mistake, I had some games for some time but my first computer I got around 1996 and I usually played first Anno, Tiberium Sun, Settlers 3, Tzar... etc.
My childhood is full of RTS and Nintendo games... I am old.

This would be an amazing game if the naval combat wasn't so goddamn impossible to use.
As it stands, it's still pretty fun if you can find ways to avoid pirate engagements.
Creeper World 3
This is like the more detailed and less abstract counterpart to Crusader Kings, all kinds dynasty shenenigans, council politics and firebombing your competition. It's great and even has multiplayer.
>>345456902
Except you always start out with enough money to build your own shop and from there upgrading it and advancing through politics is easy peasy. You almost cannot lose.
>>345451197

very intricate but refreshing in the same respect
b.a.t a very nice cyber punk point and click game it has some amazing characters

Every fucking time I start a new game I realize it's one of the best games to have ever been conceived.
>>345452394
It's a bit expensive for me. I passed on it once when it was on sale. How are formations and terrain bonuses?
>>345456902
This is basically The Sims of business and politics. It needs a sequel. A good one.
>>345458364
It's getting a sequel, don't know if it'll be any good though.
>>345458364
The Guild 3 is in the works, but it's by different people and I don't think there's a lot of information about exaclty it's supposed to play yet beyond vague buzzphrases like "it'll combine the best parts of the Guild 2 and Europe 1400".
>>345458228
This is true. Also, Maran Gor completely shits over all other gods.
Outlaws. Great Soundtrack.
I never played C&C where should I start?
>>345459298
Red Alert
>>345459298
Here:
https://cncnet.org/red-alert
Or OpenRA if you only care about skirmish/multiplayer.
Then go to Tiberian Sun, Red Alert 2, Generals and C&C 3. Renegade if you want an fps, and Red Alert: A Path Beyond and Tiberian Sun Reborn for multiplayer fpsif you can find players.
>>345459298
Red Alert 2
>>345459403
>>345459547
>>345459757
I only care about the single player, it has been a long time since I played a new good RTS campaign.
>>345459934
Then play the single player campaigns. Start with Red Alert.
>>345459934
Yeah, then RA, TS, RA2, C&C3 and Generals can be played at any time because it's completely different from the others.
Also, for other good RTS campaigns check out:

>Earth 2150

The people making TG3 are the same people that made Superpower 2, so they seem to know a thing or two about making niche simulators.
They also have this series of articles about their planned AI system, which sounds interesting:
http://www.golemlabs.com/?tech=2
I'm cautiosly optimistic.
Let's not forget about this game, guys. The visuals and gameplay were fucking spectacular in it. If there's any RTS I'd ever speedrun, it'd be this game.
>>345460370
I got this as a gift from a Steam friend. I really have to go back to playing it. I've never even finished the first mission.
Yeah the combat can get repetitive and the AI can be dumb as shit sometimes but if you enjoy games like HoMM and King's Bounty it's worth checking out.
Also the art style is amazing.Disciples III
Also, this game. Holy fuck, so much fun was had with this. The fact that units gained XP and transferred over in the campaign was addictive as fuck.
Outcast was great.
You can get the patched version on steam.
>>345460642
Dont mention it. Disciples died at 2.
>>345460578
Play it, dude. It's fun as fuck. It's how your guys gain XP and can be lost forever that makes you care. I think I completed the campaign at least 10 times as a kid.
>>345460729
>The fact that units gained XP and transferred over in the campaign was addictive as fuck.
I have a hunch you'd really enjoy Warzone 2100. It even has the persistant base/using transporters to bring units into the actual mission area thing going on.
>>345453107
just buy/produce some seeds nigger, 2 islands are sufficient to get to the top pop level
>>345460642
Be sure to get Reincarnation expansion though, it's the only version that's somewhat playable.
>>345452346
4 is literally improved 3 though.
played alot of Dark colony when I was young. The game has aged like milk...
>>345460918
Probably. But the always looming backlog and being impatient with new games doesn't help. It's easier for me to just play something I'm already familiar with.
>>345460642
Motherfucker are you serious? Disciples 2 is a god damn masterpiece in game design compared to the abomination that is 3. It's barely playable with the expansion but god damn they ruined a fantastic series.
Play Disciples 2 if you want a game like HoMM and King's Bounty.
Majesty fantasy kingdom sim is very good and extremely underrated
>>345456902
I hope the sequel doesn't suck, for all its faults guilds was a unique and interesting game
>>345461424
>tfw tried playing majesty as a kid
>gave up every time because I didn't understand what the fuck was going on
>>345461424
Seconding Majesty. Damn good game. A shame they sucked the soul out of the series with Majesty 2.
>>345451197
>You guys remember The Settlers?
>Great game right?
>We here at Ubisoft always make great games, therefore we proudly present the next title in the Settler series: ASSFAGGOTS with production lines
>Pre-order now goy!
>>345461424
I fucking love majesty, they should've made it so that multiplayer made players become heroes with one player being the majesty
This right here. King of Dragon Pass. Its not expensive and after some hours in you will feel like a clan leader thinking about crops, cattle, chaos and relationships to other clans.
>>345453542
>tfw no Dorf Fort with Cultures visuals.
Feels fucking bad man.
Cultures 1/2/Northland were my fav games as a kid, campaigns weren't great due to the repetition, but fuck huge custom maps were just the best.
I really wish there were more village management/building games with an emphasis on the people.
The Guild series had potential, but is overall pretty shit and the Sims is about the closest i've found.
>>345461759
Nothing wrong with MOBAs, anon. It's what people want to play. Nobody is stopping you from enjoying the old RTS games, but the demand has simply decreased. I used to enjoy RTS a lot as well, but I just don't have the attention span anymore, and mobas are comfy.
Battle Realms.
It's a very unique RTS game since you actually have to actually train your soldiers.
By default you get a peasant hut that constantly produces peasants for free, you can send that peasant to a Dojo and train him as a spearman, or to a shooting range and get an archer. You can also combine different units by sending them to different training buildings - archer sent to an alchemist's hut will come out as a huge sumo dude with a huge artillery cannon. And if your unit goes through all of the training buildings he comes out as a Samurai that's pretty decent against everything. There are 4 unique factions, fighting animations are really well done and it even has a non linear (albeit pretty silly) campaign.
It went unnoticed when it was released due to being close to WC3, that was released only a few months later.
This great game right here. A shame the studio collapsed while working on the next one. Maybe one day.
>>345462178
Battle Realms 2 never ever. What happened to it?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCm6zGa2ijE
>>345462678
Devs tried to kickstart a shitty hearthstone rip-off instead. They failed miserably.
Then they tried to release an HD remake of the original game on Steam with functioning matchmaking and shit. They failed miserably, their main programmer left them, the game is still nowhere in sight.
I presume they just gave up.
>>345460370
What game?
>>345462990
Original War
>tfw always wanted to like RTSes but the RT part of it always stresses me the fuck out
What are some good TB ones? Besides HoMM.
DASH DASH DASH
>>345463141
King's Bounty, all of them.. Disciples 2. Age of Wonders 2/Shadow Magic and Age of Wonders 3. Obviously HoMM though you can always try the one nobody every played, 4.
>>345463245
Isn't HoMM complete shit beyond 3?
>>345462498
>that hotel management mission
I hated it so much.
a BRÜTAL hidden gem
>>345463420
5 is actually good with the expansions
>>345463141
Battle Isle 3
Battle for Wesnoth
>>345463420
No, 4 is just very different and 5 is very good game with all the expansions (if you can stomach the "Warcraft is really popular right now" artstyle).
It's hard to beat perfection.
>>345463432
>shitty RTS elements
the game was so freaking good then that happens, NOPE
>>345463420
HoMM 4 tried something new and wasn't successful at it. It's still pretty good, and has the best music and campaigns in the series imo.
>>345455549
I dont remember half those buildings, is this a mod?
>>345463605
It wouldn't be so bad if it was properly foreshadowed and explained. But no one expected it and the shift in gameplay focus came as an unpleasant surprise.
>>345452394
Got my full color manual coming today. The differences from 3.X to now are too big to ignore.
Better than Final Fantasy, any of them.
>>345463841
>underated
yeah right, its just about one of the more popular games for that system
What are some alternatives to Settlers?
Wanted to play through S4 but it seems the game is broken on a bunch of ATI cards on Windows 10. Played through S2 gold recently, thirsting for more games like that.
Why do all the recent settlers games have to be complete and utter dogshit? The one where you control fixed size segments of the map and have to fight at certain control points killed any interest I had in the series.
>>345456902
>>345457109
Guild 2 is a complete shithouse compared to the original. This is not an RTS game. Why did they try to make an RTS game out of it? Killed the series. Waiting to see if Guild3 has the balls to revive.
>>345463841
Everyone and their mothers heard about Golden Sun.
Why has this game been forgotton?
>>345458228

My favorite Tower Defense, it even had a "deluxe" edition a few months ago.
It's not that old (2012) but yet I can't find anyone who played it.
I can't even remember how I discovered this game for myself so.. Here it is.
Fucking DROD
Seriously, if you like puzzles, you -need- to play this game
It's such a careful work of love for puzzles and secrets

this game was rad as hell, I need to get the 1.1 version someday
I was pretty sad when the remake kickstarter failed.
>>345460729
Warlords Battlecry does the same with regular units. All units who gain champion status can be carried over to the next campaign. Your hero can literally summon an armored skeleton giant with a champion status immediately.
Tetrobot and co.
Seriously underrated puzzler. Probably my second fav game ever.
>>345454227
We're all going to die here.
one of the best strategy games ever made and one of the few rpg/rts mixes that actually worked.
Warlords Battlecry II/III - 16 races, more than 20 hero professions, endless possibilities.

>had a great crafting system
>had decent combat
>had great spell casting
>only those who played it know why it's good
It really is good.
Nexus: The Jupiter Incident
Oh boy, I can post this one somewhere else than in a GBA thread. Look up stuff for this one and you will be blown away by the only RTS on the GBA.

>>345452579
Two things: Get your economy done correctly. You can also change your food for mines, so everyone gets fish at first until bread and meat are produced.
Secondly, the ai is retarded and you can abuse it. If one tower of the ai gets attacked, it send all units to defend without attacking back on their way to said tower. Also keep as little towers for yourself, it only attacks if the ai feels strong enough, not when you gather all units around your few towers
>>345465350

Battle Realms was a great ass game. Too much micromanagement, but still great.
I can't get it working on my PC these days. :(
>>345465876
It works as well as RTS should on the GBA. Not perfect but a testament on the bizarre technology that is the GBA.
Civil War Generals 2: Grant, Lee, Sherman.

Then it becomes top tier uncomfy.
>>345466212
Even the GoG version? I had some troubles with pirated ones due to minimap not showing, but GoG version ran fine. At least on Windows 7, didn't try running it on 10 yet.

>>345463141
play RTS/RTT games with active pause feature, like Earth 2150 or Blitzkrieg.
>>345465479
Seconding this. Arx Fatalis is a great game. It has a unique setting undergound with a good backstory to boot.
>>345465479
It's a fucking awesome game with great replay value since almost all playstyles are viable. Completed it as an archer, melée fighter, thief backstabber, mage, and combination of them all often.
The only thing that new players going in need to be warned of is the cryptic bullshit you have to solve in order to progress. I ran around for ages in the catacombs, trying to find the solution to progress further down each level. Don't even get me started on the part with the 6 runes you need to arrange.
I-It was supposed to be a trilogy...

So do you guys actually like these games or is it just nostalgia talking?
More of a real time civ than age of empires. The amount of economy, taxes, diplomacy, loyality and spies make it unique

It's an okay settlers clone, that looked pretty good for 1999. I think it was more of an rts than settlers, because you had to micromanage single units.
The whole scenario was really weird though. Jowood was a pretty based company back then

>>345468862
I played it last year for several hours. The arcade like combat is really fun and doesn't require much to learn compared to most other more complex space simulations.
I just got bored at some point when it was pretty much do everything in this quest hub, then get a mission to go to the next system and do the same. But the story was pretty gud and fun to follow. Sadly I never had the chance to play it online, where people could be pirates, like a mini eve online

also does anyone remember some old scifi game in which you controlled some sort of hover tank and fighting other tanks? the movement was pretty fast paced and i remember some kind of customization for your weapons and engines, the entire game took place during a revolution or something, probably got the game from a magazine in the early 2000s

Personally I enjoyed the remake more, but you are entitled to your opinion.
The one thing Disciples 3 improved compared to 2 was magic system, it's not nearly as absurdly broken.
Better than Warcraft 3, not even rusing.

Its not really complex though. The web is basically pointless. You have to go every direction. The combat is awful. Its got some nice music, among other things, and some great ideas. I am looking forward to the sequel, but the game is pretty simple, and stupidly easy once you understand how to build ships.

Man, I remember religiously reading PC mag for reviews of games. Still have a list from 2003 which games should I buy/play. But back then, there was no fast internet, nor there was legal way to buy games. Only local pirate shops, and the game had to be popular.

>The first and foremost challenge facing Night Dive was figuring out who actually owned the rights to the game. It was developed by Monolith and published by Fox Interactive, but in the decade-and-a-half since it came out, Monolith was acquired by Warner Bros. Interactive, while Fox Interactive was purchased by Vivendi, which then entered into a merger with Activision. Warner appeared to be the primary rights holder but told Night Dive that Activision "has some ownership" as well, as a result of that merger.; Activision, however, said it couldn't confirm its standing because the records predated digital storage and it wasn't entirely sure where the paperwork was. 20th Century Fox, which Night Dive also contacted, was in the same boat.
>There wasn't much enthusiasm for the idea of re-releasing NOLF from anyone, according to the report, but the wheels didn't come off entirely until December 2014, when Night Dive received a letter from an attorney representing Warner that threatened legal action if it went ahead with a new version of the game. That led to further back-and-forth regarding licensing, but in February the final word came down that Warner wasn't interested in either publishing an updated NOLF itself, or partnering with Night Dive to make it happen. Because of that, Night Dive said it will now let its trademark on the title lapse.
Fucking Warner

We were about to commit a large chunk of development time in making sure that No One Lives Forever 1 & 2 were 100% compatible with Windows 8 64, Linux, OSX, had a full complement of Steam features, achievements, working multiplayer, dedicated servers… this is our baby, and we really wanted to give it every chance that we could, to make sure that people would play it again, and enjoy it to its fullest extent."

>They don't want money then?
It's hoarder mentality taken to its logical extreme.
Every single fucking company that sits on an old title is specifically doing it to prevent other people from profiting on it, or ideas similar to it. Doing this creates legal hurdles that other companies need to spend time and money navigating in order to avoid stepping on the lawsuit landmine. This suppresses other companies financially with minimal effort.
Also, thanks to Disney's corporate jewgold-seeking behavior, by constantly "lobbying" the United States legal system for extensions of time in copyright law (read: the only copyright system that matters apparently) basically every single fucking "intellectual property" that's made by anyone will now last 90+ fuckin years, and will renew the moment they do something with it.
If a meteor hit and killed everyone, legally, Disney's last created movie property wouldn't be public domain until 21xx.You think i'm joking, but i'm NOT. This is the world we live in; filled with pseudo-monopolies.
> Shit will never be fucking public domain again.

So instead of allowing another company to reproduce a game and earning royalties for doing nothing; they sit on the game because they could, potentially in the future, do this themself and earn all the money?
That in combination with the need to buy rights; left and right which will never get published is seriously fucked up. And if we consider that it would take 90 year before other companies could even try to get a public domain access many great gaming series will die, because they rather let it die in a cellar than selling the rights or even sell the right for one game of the franchise.
>>345483754went full retard, sorry
>>345483676
>The camera was fucking killer, quite literally.
I'd rather say the unskippable death animation.
>>345483103
Just make sure you don't die ever. I swear if I see that bitch on my death bed im gonna punch her in the face
>>345483806
>do this themself and earn all the money?
100% of the profits is more than 99%
welcome to unregulated capitalism.
>>345473353
oh I didn't know that, thats awesome
Also, first Empire Earth was great, probably best WW1/2 campaigns in any RTS.
The AI is utterly retarded, but it's still a great game.
Good memories on this one
>>345472495
I was surprised /v/ never made a connection to Ishameal and Max during the MGSV conspiracy threads.
>>345458228
So theres a bunch of versions of this now. What's the best one? GoG? Steam? IOS?
Ahem.
>>345484764
Steam shits itself for anything older than 5 years, GOG versions will run on everything
>>345478731
Sell me on the games anon
>>345484446
It's a shame that the game could support colossal armies when mercenary rushes were the tactic you would encounter 99% of the time.
>>345480815
I've heard it's supposed to have a great story, but how is it gameplay-wise? Playable? Hard to get into?
Guys, maybe you'll help me, there was a action adventure game where you were some kind royal or bodyguard, you woke up near some naked chick, got some training and then in the cutscene was poisoned after failed assasination atempt. You woke up in hospital, changed is some kind of monster (looking like werewolf) you could use from this point on skill that slowly changed you into a moster, i've been looking for this game for 5 years now...
>>345460370
Holy shit this game.
Fucking amazing, we need more games where it depends on you how many of your people survive and if they will appear in the next missions. You could actually build an attachment to some of your guys.
>>345485587
Dark Earth?
>>345485962
Holy shit yes, and some1 posted it before lol. Thanks mate
>>345472218
>-electric playground
>Never seen this being talked about
Fuck everything.
>>345486846
That game's sequel was fucking horrible, even if it continued that awesome spell system.
>>345455524
I love the game for what it is but I'm just too stupid/hyperactive for business simulators. will probably give it another try in the future.
>>345476169
what game is ?
>>345488073
Caesar III i think
>>345469674
I never played the scenarios or skirmishes, but I spent hundreds of hours in the comfy building mode
Hard West. Xcom on the wild west with a gritty as fuck history and atmosphere.
>>345469130
Aww snap, one of the best RTS ever.
>>345458237
Formations are, actually, *HUGELY* important. You script your armies, telling them where to stand and how to act and it makes a remarkable difference.
There were a lot of old underrated tycoon style games back in the day.
>>345479000
this game spooked me so much when I was a kid that I developed this weird fear that when I went to bed and opened my eyes, Boo would be there waiting for me to look at him so he can spook my balls off.
>>345488331
meh, it was alright. I kind of half regret paying $12 for it.
>>345484764
Jesus Christ don't get the Steam one
It doesn't allow you to have multiple saves, UI is shit and some features have been completely removed
This was the best platformer for the Genesis
it looks fucking gorgeous even today
Constructor, anyone?
Fuck that AI difficulty though.
>>345484810
Mah fucking nigga.
Still have to finish the first one, but Odyssey was and still is GOAT.
So much time spent just wandering around as a kid.
>>345484764
iOS version has a lot of new content but is annoying to play on a touch screen and less convenient to savescum, which you'll surely do after failing a heroquest and getting a council member killed despite having done everything perfectly
>>345485161
It is an older game, so don't expect any sort of handholding. The only directions are at the start of every chapter and even those can be vague. Explore everything, not only will you improve your skills, but you will also find items that you cannot buy normally. Combat is grid- and turn-based, which is also used for a variety of traps that you solve in the same layout as regular encounters. There are also lots of riddle boxes spread around the overworld, some pretty easy (mainly the ones for main quests) and others ridiculously hard.
Playing it blind first, then going for a 100% run feels incredibly satisfying.
>>345479468
no i loved it
>>345491036
I see, thank you.
i love this so much
Every time I mention this game to someone they haven't heard of it. Recently picked it up again and finished it after years and years and it's still brutal towards the end, very underrated.
Does anyone remember MDK?
>>345483867
April Ryan was one of my first crushes. Really fucking loved that game when it came out.
>>345491575
i remember playing that on the xbone port and thinking the controls were awful but i think my brother really liked it.
>>345491575
The OST of JFG is incredible. The composers of Rare were fucking talented.
SS Anubis, Sekhmet and Eschebone themes are in my head forever.
>>345491575
Do all the people you talk to happen to be 11 years old anon? Seriously it's one of Rare's best known pieces of work.
>>345492465
funny how it was called Sudden Strike in germany and Blitzkrieg everywhere else
literally reverse translation
>>345491575
Beanland/Norgate at their very best. No one else alive can pull that off on a 8MB cartridge. Very best OST on the N64, bar none.
>>345474430
>>345471765
Never met a single person whoalsobeat this game.
The gift of the precurssor being a bunch of new worlds for everyone to live in was a massive copt out.
This game is called hexplorer and I've never seen it posted anywhere. I can guarantee you wont get any result on any imageboard archive, I had to browse old games for hours to find it since there's a lot of things with similar names.
It's okay, one of the earliest rpg's using the voxel engine, with lots of characters and skills that works like items you find, fun but with little content and repetitive, it has great levels with puzzles and secrets. At the time it was a wonderful fucking incredible game to me though.
I just want to post it before I forget it exists again.
Good morning to you
Some low budget version of Valkyria Chronicles, was fun at the time though
>>345492465
I spent hundreds of hours in Sudden Strike's multiplayer. It's easily the best WW2 RTS I've ever played. I was in a clan doing 4 v 4, 6 v 6, absolutely fucking fantastic game. Awful single player- it didn't even have AI, just scripted waves when your units hit a certain part of the map. It was so cheaply cobbled together, and yet its aesthetic was absolutely 100% perfect. Truly a great game, I wish the community was still around.
>>345473070
check all games from that guy, prolly best cyberpunk games.
Dont play one with the ghost, its kindy shity, playable but no where near his scifi adventures
>>345493550

this thread is for shit games only
>>345491429

this thread is such plebby shit
it does not even scratch the surface of hidden gems
only very few good games are posted
arx fatalis is one of them

there is so much hidden gold on PC that even with almost 500 posts to this thread, almost none of it is mentioned
/v/ is literally a console peasant zone littered with neogaf and redditthis game is also available on PC and xbox, making it a microsoft exclusive. and part 2 is shit
>>345492192

>>345468862
All the servers are deader than E.Y.E.
Damn shame.
Mageslayer, made by Raven Software (Heretic, Hexen, etc.)
Fun, simple top-down hack-and-slash. Pretty short.
