without medicine it'll almost always kill you
with herbal medicine you need a good doctor or full time bedrest
with regular medicine you can sometimes get away with letting them work normally
with glitterworld medicine you should build immunity fast enough to have them do everything they normally do
For things like parasites and sensory mechanites it takes like... 10 successful treatments to go away
This is not something that happens quickly. Your doctors will inevitably fuck it up enough times it may as well be a permanent affliction

I must have 100+ hours or so, Dwarf Fortress i must have around the same hours and i enjoy more playing Rimworld.
How do I incapacitate people so I can capture them? I found 4 cryo chambers in the first day and out popped 4 people with heavy weaponry, 3 of them are non-violent while I just swarm the 4th guy with melee fists.

Recommend starting with a team with one person able to do construction, one with growing, and one with research for the basic essentials.
I'd say build early buildings with wood since it's more plentiful and grows back. Save your steel for more advanced stuff a bit later, such as power. Mining will likely yield more steel, but not super fast. I felt mining takes longer for rooms, but you reduce fire risk.
I'd experiment with settlement lay out, but keep in mind raids and shit come from all directions of the map, so keep that in mind.

Fact is DF is so complex and good andfunthat whenever I sit down and play something that copies it, like RW, it just reminds me how little they copy the complexity.
For example the biggest down falls for Rimworld is it's just one flat Z level. One Z level. You can't dig down at all or build up. Your entire colony is entirely 2D while Dwarf Fortress is fully 3D with hundreds of layers of stone and having fortresses with 100 dwarves is like a standard session.
I like both, but I wish RimWorld had more complexity and things to do. It's too easy to reach the stage where your colony is unkillable and thriving and nothing is exciting anymore. Not to mention no hands or legs is just silly.
I just picked the game up again though. It has been more than a year since I played it last. I did one play session yesterday and noticed a few new things like taming animals and training them, but other than that they have added very little to the game from the looks of it.
Even DF has bigger yearly updates than RW, like what is their excuse? There are no seasons in RW either. No harsh winters or anything.

You can take it out with some weak SMG fire from cover, but you need insane luck. Bows do nothing to it. Melee does nothing to it. EMP grenades rape it.

Dorf Fort is a meme game. All you do is make a wall around your fort entrance plus a drawbridge over a pit, a winding path filled with traps, and some hammerdwarves and you're ready for just about anything. For your economy, just spam mugs and toys and you can buy ANYTHING from the caravan. Farming is dead simple and metal working is basically just a bit of micromanagement. The only challenge to the game is if you make it challenging forcefully with your embark location. The game is ridden with bugs and eventually you will lose due to FPS death. The amount of FEATURES in the game aren't really that much. It's more like detail bloat that doesn't add up to much except more FPS death. Considering this game has been in development for nearly a decade, the amount of progress made is pretty low. You could sit nearly any competent programmer down for a decade and he'll probably have something much better than DF. Think of the hundreds of games that have come out in the decade, some of them being made by small teams or one person.
DF lacks direction and suffers from bugs, FPS death, and needless bloat that aren't actual features. Rimworld might be neat in a few years as a game with actual direction and concrete gameplay.

Mountainous Boreal forests make the best colonies in my opinion
Fucking grizzly bears and cougars coming by to fuck shit up and attack colonists who wish to tame them. Fuck huge forests teeming with wildlife for making a cozy little mountainside village inside, long and deadly winters that make you start preparing for the next one as soon as the snow from the first one starts to melt for a bit of difficulty and mood setting. every season has its own challenges and chores to do, leaving you little room to fuck up lest you get shafted for it later come winter.

If it's a big enough fire your colonists will never be able to put it out effectively- after a certain amount of fire is on the map, the game automatically creates rain to extinguish it. Either catch wildfires early, or just allow it to burn up nearby stuff.

Your base comes into factoring that sort of thing a lot. Most people dig into a mountain without building any floors or anything, which'll make their mood plummet. Be sure to base your colonists around your playstyle.. Green thumb trait will give mood boosts, so try to get someone with that if you've got a big farm, etc.
I know the mood mechanic seems shitty and unrealistic to all you new players, but it's a necessary evil- if you don't like it, just roll some psychopath or bloodlust colonists.

I'm in a temperate area so I'm unsure if I need cooling or heating for prisoners.

Played for like 12 hours yesterday.
I saved a person from raiders and she joined my colony, but her stats were shit so I used her as an organ mule.
I took out her kidney, lung, jaw, both eyes, nose, both ears. I replaced her limbs with wooden ones and then removed them. She's now a kissless, hugless, legless, armless missing a a lot of organs.
She's blind, cant talk, cant walk, cant maniuplute anything and is bed ridden in the hospital. My other colonists have to feed her.
Before I took her legs, she went berserk and tried to kill my colony. Since she didnt have eyes , she coudnt see where to shoot so I had my colonists shoot her and took her back to the hospital.
She was real upset after I took her organs and her arms/legs. Her mood was 'on the verge of breaking' for about 10 days in game. She coudn't though, because she had no arms or legs.
Eventually though, she came around and accepted her fate. She keeps my other colonists company when they get injured and have to go to the hospital. She gives my colonists negative mood because she is 'disfigured' and has 'creepy breathing', but she keeps them company.
Her mood finally went up so I rewarded her. I took off her double eyepatches and replaced them with solid gold eyeballs. They don't allow her to see, but they look cool.

Why not take advantage of it? I used to fuck up traders doing it.
I usually put a table and a few chairs in a small room with a vent inside and made the room more easily accessible than the rest of my base. The traders would come in and I would rush to lock the door behind them. Since the room approaches boiling temperatures they end up dying of heat stroke in less than a day. You could also do the same thing by spamming heaters, since the AI is too stupid to try and break them you can simply turn them off when everyone is dead and claim your reward.

Turrets and hydroponics basins are completely negligible in power consumption compared to fucking sun lamps. Hydroponics take up like 70W, Turrets take up no more than 300W, but sunlamps take up 1600W.
I do not have growing seasons, it is literally impossible to sustain my colonists and my livestock on hunting alone, and herds rarely pass by anymore. I've also deforested half the map in a desperate bid to keep my fuel generators operational.

This is exactly what I do with human meat. Before I built housing sufficient for growing hay I would just cut up all my prisoners and people from the body pit and convert them to kibble for my turkeys. Honestly cannibalism isn't punished anywhere near as bad as it used to, I remember at one point my colonists getting so starved that they literally just dragged whole corpses to the people in the medbay to feed them.
