I liked the item finding mechanic in RoR. Inventories are a must too.
A good feature is some type of enemies that don't attack you or have any real purpose, and just serve as passive fauna. It unsettles you just enough to think that they might attack.
In general, Horror games are at their best when you have a lot of freedom to do things and explore. They should be like haunted houses you can explore, not hallways with pre-existing scares.
