Nintendo gave lip service to the idea of the DS being a separate and distinct idea from the GameBoy line; this was most likely just to cover themselves if it sunk.
But the DS was hugely successful, was capable of traditional games anyway, and ended up with a solid variety. The distinction between the DS and the GB was quickly arbitrary. I wouldn't mind another single screen handheld from Nintendo that brought back the GB name, though.
