Have you ever been so anally annihilated by something you localize a game about it?

X means X. There is no X means A/B/C. I don't give a fuck if you hate the sound of "it can't be helped" or short/simple sentences. If that's the translation, that's the translation. OP's pic shows that perfectly. The JP text is short, blunt, and to the point. Just leave it exactly like that.
>>345406970
Ever heard someone at least once say how Jap dialog is dull as fuck when straight up translated or by people who can understand it?
That's basically where it comes from.
>>345407518

>>345408047
>how the Japanese developers want it
I think you mean how 8-4 wants it. Capcom over in moonland doesn't give a fuck, so long as the game sells. What's funny is how Bamco said they specifically want to avoid "localization" and censorship with Tales of Berseria in order to deliver "the exact experience the Japanese are getting".
>>345408095
Context and such is well and good, but there's a distinct difference between that localized mess and the proper translation. I hate to break it to you, but Japs talk really fucking flat, don't throw vulgarities around, and so on. Their entire language/writing system relies on short, simple sentences.
>>345403967
The only case where I think localisation is necessary is if something makes absolutely no sense after translation.
For example, Fireball and Fireball Charming were full of jokes and puns but little of it makes sense in English.
>>345407518

No. Game is much easier, and bows are better than they have ever been.
I see nothing wrong with this. It was said once, I got a chuckle, and then I beat the shit out of a Great Maccao with my DB.
how much dialog does monster hunter have?
I felt bad skipping so much of it when I played tri, but the characters tended to drone on and on without actually syaing anything, I mean in the op picture on the right they pretty much don't communicate anything to you besides "hey I'm bubbly and quirky" in a small wall of text
>>345408481
Oh shit, what do you know, THE TALES GAMES STILL HAVE MEMES. And the ones without were translated by 8-4.
Also, the exact experience is IMPOSSIBLE. Do you know what Namco does with most of their loces? Nothing, and they're shit, like the fucking Xenoverse or Sword Art Online.
One where they did change shit was Project X Zone 2 and it's localization was fantastic and had better writing than the Japanese version.

I don't get why the fact that people in different parts of the world all have vastly different cultural codes is so hard to get, and on top of that the differences in language and exposure make a world of difference. want something cool and exotic/foreign? throw some random english words in. But then people don't want it changing despite the fact that you won't find it cool or exotic if you're american!
>>345409215
Yes. Damn good game and comfy online
>>345409236
Because the OP's pic show's exactly what's wrong with that. The JP text is straight-forward with no bullshit, while the localized version is "lol so quirky xD".
What bothered me isn't the change in personality, since the original didn't really have a personality. What bothers me is the fucking meme. Why would some bitch in a pre-industrial dinosaur hunting society know about 21st century memes and phrases? If she was just saying "get good" or "stop sucking" it'd make sense. But no, they had to shove in a meme where it doesn't belong.
>>345409339

> I don't want some schmuck who thinks they can write something better than the original creator.
Again you're assuming the original creator is someone worth talking about over the translator in this case. This isn't like translating a novel it's a product, written by a team of people, with interns and other people doing some of it.
>It's like those faggots who do "re-writes" of doujins because they think the dialog/plot that the artist used were boring.

Because I've come to be wary and untrusting of "localizations" due to how many times they've butchered games. Pic related is a prime example of "localization" fuckery, especially from 8-4 who did MHGen and FE Awakening as recent examples.
>>345410457
People have different ideologies when it comes to translations.
>>345409963

>>345404160

>>345410457
Define faithful reproduction. Define "same tone and information"
At times of course that's easy. Especially if you only look at small sections and pick easy examples. But there are many times where the intent would be lost if you kept the same information, do you change it, or do you leave it?
>>345410639
>8-4 has done every Monster Hunter since Tri.
I'm aware, and that doesn't change my stance at all.
>Also, this is no way butchers a game
It certainly butchers the dialog, which is a part of the game, especially for games like FE Awakening and Xenoblade X (both of which got mauled by 8-4).
>WHY ARE YOU PLAYING MONSTER HUNTER FOR A FUCKING QUEST INTRO DIALOG?
I'm playing the game to have fun. Yes, the dialog in a Monster Hunter game is a rather minor portion, but that doesn't change the fact that they fucked it up.
>>345410832
How was Xenoblade mauled?
>>345405226

>>345410774

>>345410507

>>345410832

>>345411102
Yakuza 3
Incidentally; I don't mind the jovial and occasionally memey tone of MH's translation because NO ONE reads the flavour text. Whoever had to write all of it on whatever budget they were given almost certainly just glanced over what was said, making sure to keep the red bits intact, and bullshitted at lightspeed to fill the boxes. There is literally no point in trying harder than that for reams of shit no one will read.
>>345411238
That's not how it was in Japan though! IT'S BUTCHERED NOW.
I AM SO AUTISTIC, ONE LINE BUTCHERS AN ENTIRE GAME.
>>345410907
In no particular order:
>censorship out the ass with age changes, clothes changes, etc
>said censorship was lazily done, such as a fundoshi being changed to shorts, yet the inventory picture is still a fundoshi
>removed the breast size slider from the character screen (but it can still be changed via save edits since the value is still there)
>dialog is heavily changed, such as religious references being changed/removed, memes, and so on
>>345411243
MH in general does not rely heavily upon dialog; I'm talking about localizations in general here.
>It would be more faithful to the series however it would alienate some of the core demographic in the West.
How the fuck would an accurate translation alienate the core demographic? That's like saying that NISA bringing games over uncensored would alienate the core demographic.
>it's another butchering by "memetendo"
>criticizing "git gud" when it's a totally reasonable mentality

Point is localizations can be easily be worse nowadays.

>>345411297
I will slightly concede to your example.
Slightly because at least Sega admitted they fucked up.
>>345410832

>>345411407
>How the fuck would an accurate translation alienate the core demographic?
Well, if the prior games in the series had quirky dialogue it is what the audience that played through the series for the last many years would be used to. If this were to change suddenly it would alienate the demographic that was built up prior to the release of the new game despite the newer localization being closer to the original intent. Strictly speaking, when working with localizations the core demographic of the region does not necessarily get the same experience as what was originally intended

"logue" as in catalogue comes from the Latin root "logus", which means to pick out or to enroll
Dialog is the proper spelling. It's always hilarious when people try to smugly correct you and then end up getting it wrong themselves.

It works well in resident evil because it's designed around it. comparatively, In monhun the available control mechanics do not compliment the other design choices in the game like they do in resident evil. Monhun doesn't have much of a learning curve for the gameplay itself so much as it does for the limitations imposed on the player by the monsters mobility, your recovery options, your stamina, and the type of weapon you're using. You're actually fighting against poor and conflicting design choices more than you're really fighting monsters.

My ideal translation philosophy is that translators should do their best to make it sound like natural english speech or writing. Direct translations often sound weird or stilted because Japanese people just don't talk in the same way as western people. Rewriting dialogue to sound more natural is fine as long as the original information, intent and tone is preserved as much as possible. Completely changing the message just because you feel like it is plain wrong, but going in the opposite direction and leaving shit untranslated because you don't think you can approximate it accurately isn't right either. If there's a pun or joke or whatever that only makes sense in Japanese, try your best to make a similar one that works in English.
If there's some kind of reference, pun or cultural item that just can't be given an accurate translation, then either ignore it and just sacrifice the reference for the sake of natural speech, or leave it in with an approximate translation (if necessary) and then include an explanation in a supplementary document. Don't plaster translator's notes on the screen, and DEFINITELY don't try to translate cultural elements by using a western equivalent (like making rice balls fucking donuts). It's enough for me to know that takoyaki is food, which is easily communicated through context alone. If I really want to know what it is, I can look it up or read the supplementary material.
>>345414126

literal translations should be used in every case except when the text is rhyming, alliterating, or using another grammar or sound structure where a direct translation may not convey that at all. In cases like these, transliteration should be used instead.
Literally writing an incoherent and entirely unrelated wall-of-text as the translation is buttfucking retarded.
There was a mistranslation in Dead or Alive 5 from a japanese girl who wears kimonos and is a geisha in training where in Japanese she recites a feudal-era proverb as one of her win quotes. In the english translation she just says "cherry blossoms and warriors"

>>345418654
Actually, 400 years ago was the last time English suffered a drastic change (the homogenization of vowel sounds from the various english regions), and it's been essentially dead steady since then. You can expect that it'll still be the nearly same for the next few thousand years, for the same reason that Icelandic has been nearly unchanged for the last 1000 years: It was cemented in great literary works like the King James Bible and Shakespeare. There's too much writing, from then all the way to now, for isolated pockets to begin deviating like languages did thousands of years ago.
A couple of shifted vowels, some new words from the times (like "newspaper," "computer," "airplane"), a few slangs and idioms - that's all you can expect to change over the next several thousand years.
Bilingual here. I speak both English and Japanese. You fuckers need to shut up with this meme that translating something exactly leaves it "awkward and stilted".
It's not difficult to translate something, then alter it to make the sentence flow naturally. This is literally the most basic form of translation.
This localization is shit, and not just because it loses the meaning of the original text, not only because it's filled with stupid fucking memes, but because it wastes my fucking time and doesn't teach me anything new about the game or the world of the characters.
It's stupid, dumb, inflated text that adds """""personality""""" to the series and I'm really fucking sick of it in the English versions. I just spam the A button in these games and ignore all this stupid time wasting shit, and I wish I could just sit back and enjoy this stuff. Also, what's up with this translation specifically? I noticed Killer Beetle is switched to fucking Shiny Beetle? It's always been Killer Beetle, in Japanese it's fucking キラビートル which is literally pronounced "kira biitoru". This indicates that the translators read the text for the description of the bug, and then changed the fucking name because they thought it fit better. Yes I'm fucking mad.
>>345402218

Because the localization was done incredibly well and we know full well that Sakurai gave permission for them to do that. Also, the changes mostly involve tweaking characters to make them funnier or exaggerate their personalities, not entirely changing the meaning of the fucking text.
Lurk more.
>>345420031
the worst part is it takes capcom nearly an entire year to fucking localize these games.
japs have already gotten hyped, pre-ordered, waited patiently, got the game, played it for hundreds of hours and moved on by the time we get it and all the footage you could ever want to see of these games is already uploaded in full before there's even a solid western release date.

>>345402218
Japanese writing has always been bland as fuck. The shit going on in OP pic looks like it was written by Gearbox, but that doesn't change the fact that outside of word/kanji puns, Japanese writing is pretty fucking dry.
Here's a Golden Sun example
>Japanese: Energy is a type of energy
>English : Psynergy is a type of energy
My biggest problem with modern localisations is the trend to try turning fucking everything into a joke, while at the same time, a lot of these localisation guys aren't nearly as funny as they seem to think they are.
A localisation that takes liberties can be done very well, but I'd rather take a dry, direct translation over some failed writer completely flipping the script in an attempt to be funny, especially when they end up making shit like in the OP which is needlessly wordy and incredibly obnoxious compared to the rather simple but helpful presentation of basic information that was in the original Japanese.
Don't try to fix what isn't fucking broken.
>>345423121

>>345420812
Monster Hunter is a social game disguised as a video game and is 100% the reason why it's nearly three times as popular in crowded japan than it is outside of japan.
These games have historically had very poor game design if only for the reason that Capcom has done little if anything at all to update or change the engine they've used since this series' conception in 2004. Almost everyone who's done an MH knockoff has done it better, even the chinese company operating Monster Hunter Online.
It's a lot less likely to turn you into a sour frustrated beast when you can verbally communicate with friends or even strangers in a personable setting. Otherwise, playing it solo or online with randoms with limited communication options is basically ripe for creating situations where making friends through the games is harder than making enemies.
>>345423126
I don't get what you're saying.

I don't know much about anime localization except from Ghibli movies, I rarely watch them and if I do it's jap audio with subs because Japanese voices crack me up

This famalams.
Inside jokes are inside jokes for a reason. They should stay within their communities. It's when normies and newfags try to bring that shit to a bigger audience that shit gets all fucked up.

You could also learn chinese and get a job in literally any company but the chinks are some of the worst people to work with.

What did he mean by this?TN: "What did he mean by this?" means explain and give some examples

Was it VA'd? If it was, then you should be getting the nuances in the delivery. If that one also sucks, then maybe there wasn't any particular care put into it, doesn't mean Japanese = bland.

Nigga even english has a lot of stuff that can be interpreted in multiple ways. You can easily lose stuff like implications and puns in translation.

I-I like both.
They've both got their moments.
You morons do know that Capcom hires an outsource company to do the initial translations. Then the text comes back and they have a team of in-house editors go through ALL of the text. They have the final say in what's published.
If half of you fagots knew Japanese, you'd know that it is a terribly boring language and that their idea of "writing" is recycled tropes (like it's a fat character, let's call him "Fatty").
Monster Hunter is especially terrible because you have over 100 NPCs that tell you useless information or straight up lies. Like this Bherna Gal in general. If you look at your Hunter's Notes, you'll see that barely any info is given about the monster. It'S 10x better (even if it has *gasp* a meme in it) to flavor up the text.
Last point, if you want the most boring experience ever possible when reading Minster Hunter, play the fan-translated English patch of Portable 3rd. Easily the worst text I have read in my life. But, OMG, it's faithful to original.
