Shmups are great because they're just the most core concepts in video games refined and pushed to their limits
No gimmicky movement, no combos, no lock on, no nothing, just move around the screen and shoot shit without getting shot

Pinball and Shmups have been two of my favorite genres recently.
They aren't huge time sinks so you can enjoy them without a huge commitment, and they don't have huge grinds associated so the only progression is actually you getting better at the game.

Otherwise you're talking about the primitive/traditional shmup like Twin Cobra, Raiden, R-type, Darius, etc.
