Personally I didn't find it as fun, despite the large amount of gathering endgame content isn't as satisfying and it has less customization with armors and weapon skill setups, played for a good 100 Hours and got bored, 4U I put in like 600 hours.

I used to say that too until I played this, they just took it to a whole other level it just becomes mind numbing, easily the most boring start out of all the MH games. I'd hate to be a new player to the series if this is their first game.
Anyone else find adept gunlance to just be too clunky?
Like, I went into the game thinking my mains would be Adept Gunlance and Aerial Hammer.
Aerial hammer is everything I had hoped it'd be. Really fun, makes knockouts even better since you can usually get them out of a mount, and the upercut instead of the power slam and worthless spin makes it really easiy to hit the high heads.
But Adept Gunlance is just so slow. The way it locks you into the guard for a full second almost before you can turn is bad enough, but the biggest problem to me was the lack of the shot reload.
The new heat shit is really fun to manage with the gunlance, but it's so much easier to work with with that reload you can do after any shot.
Doing the normal reload constantly or having to wait for a good counter chance just breaks up the flow so hard.

Unless you're a completionist i don't get the complaint about the gathering quests. Like 90% of the key quests are hunts and around half of the villager requests are hunts too.
Even if you don't use a guide to know what quests are key quests you can get through the game only doing hunts. After village and guild hall 1 there is like one or two gathering key quests and the game marks them as urgent too.

When I played MHX I would host rooms any time of the day and in 5 minutes I would get a full party, so it was pretty fast to get ranks.

Use Aerial Gunlance, you can pretty much spam full burst over and over again faster than you could on the ground. Works great with Normal Shots. I honestly just used Guild for any other type of shot though.

Like, I'm not far into it yet, but it seems like they've made a lot of TECHNICAL improvements/changes rather than adding more monsters or areas really.
Stuff like being able to put in account items from the delivery chest, the guy that can take shit for you once per mission back home, the whole cat shit, the styles/arts, the balance changes, etc.
I imagine a lot of those will be coming back in 5, but with whatever parts don't resonate really removed.
And THEN they'll give us all the new monsters and fewer gathering missions. Maybe even some MHO ones.

Honestly, it's best if you have a crew to play with, but if you can get sucked into grinding for fancy armor and weapons against dinosaurs and dragons, then you'll have fun.
Also, finding the weapon for you is always an enlightening experience.
I found out I'm more of a tank person, and became enamoured with the stabby cannon that comes with a giant shield.

Try to get to at least village *3 or *4 before going online though, you want some experience and not just hold everyone back like the french
There's also some good programs on windows for building armor sets and finding materials once you understand the basics, look up videos on youtube as well for combos and all your moveset for weapons since there is most definitely moves you are missing if its your first time
Also try everything or at least mostly everything, you will surprise yourself with weapons that are fun

Honestly, 4U is a really good starting point. Good tutorial quests to introduce new players, decent balance of hunting vs gathering quests, and it doesn't have the added stuff Gen brought.
Gen is also a decent start, but some of the new things it added might not stick for future games, so don't get too used to these things.3U is the perfect MH to get, though. It had a good amount of new monsters, the areas were nicely designed for the most part, and it has the benfit of being on a console

HOWEVER, I think 4U is the best game in the series for both breaking the ice as a newbie and seeing how far down the rabbit hole goes.
The series isnt like other series with good online that has everyone jump ship once the next game comes out. Youll see a major dip from the last game due to the new one coming out, but the numbers of the last game increase once the new game wades. People STILL play Freedom Unite and Portable 3rd, which came out a LONG time ago

I didn't really use ranged weapons in 4U, but I've been trying out bow in this game. Access to both Power Shot and Arc Shot is really nice, it seems like one of few weapons where's there's never not a time you can deal damage. I can see it taking some skill to keep those hits going constantly. Is Spread the best type of Arc Shot?
Later in the game do you unlock more coating ingredients at the Trader? I run out of Power Coating pretty quick and then fights tend to drag a bit.

You'll want to do this anyway, but it's especially important when you're using up your precious Power Coatings to do fully charged shots in Critical Distance. Don't waste them firing off pot-shots at a far-off target. If fights feel dragging then there's a decent chance you aren't properly staying in Critical Distance.

I'm getting better at using the appropriate charge level depending on my distance, but should I try to adapt to the bow and constantly stay at the critical range of my level 3 charge? My current bow is Rapid, Spread and Pierce so there's a pretty big distance between the first 2 and the third. Is the damage difference on a level 3 shot really significant?

If your playing online, just keep doing X->A->X->A->X to it's head. If you're playing alone, don't fear to throw in some Forward+A+X in the mix as well.

When I'm Lance charging, there's a little shine effect around the hunter once I've been running for a second or so. I looked up motion values and either this doesn't effect damage at all, or it hasn't been recorded. Does the shine mean anything at all?
Spamming the charge finisher into a downed monster's back feels sinful. As soon as something falls over it's fucked. An online LR Nibelsnarf died in a little over 6 minutes. Offline monsters are limping before the 5 minute mark.

Remobra heads have a 4% drop rate making them rarer than plates.
Took me hours to get all three and it isn't even the good part of the weapon, just an intermediate grindy step.

I'm fuckin around with gunlance and I'm not really seeing the appeal. Coming off of bug stick straight into turtling may not have been a wise decision.
These new monsters seem to have a whole lot of multi-hit moves that really fuck over Lances trying to counter. Really makes me want to move over to Evade already but I also don't want to lose my AUL.

The lack of story, lack of difficulty, lack of new content, horrible amount of gathering quests, nostalgia pandering, fps and fov downgrade, and loads of other negative quirks like the inability to warp to your house, lack of item sets, lazy cutscenes, and bad town layout cement generations as worse than 4U for me.
I'll still probably out in hundreds of hours but it's certainly not going to be the thousands I put into 4U.

The Hunter's Hub is just a bunch of wide open space for no reason that takes longer than it should to move around and get ready for the hunt. There was absolutely no reason to design a gathering hall where the food table is so far from the quest counter.

Whenever I saw Lagi, Ludroth, or Gobul winding up for a charge, I sheathed my weapon and swam like a motherfucker. Vertical dodging is more useful for avoiding horizontal attacks, like Lagi's tail swipe.

Fuck the FPS drops, it's a battle you can't win. I suggest turning on 3D for the extra readability. 3D on gives you more pixels and depth perception which helps a LOT to know what the fuck is going on in your screen. 3D option on with physical 3D switch all the way down for AA so the game doesn't look like a PS1 game.

Much easier, and treated more like regular weapons. The kinsect is upgraded separately (but still tied with the respective IG it was paired with) So you don't need to buff kinsect X amount of levels before you can rank up your gear. -Charge Down (speed and stamina) cuts charge time for a power bug shot down to a second.

Best thing to do is replace the nub with a PSP stick. Pulling out the nub is the most gruesome thing you will do that week, and you really have to pull at it (and break it slightly, but you'll never want it back), but the thing actually WORKS with a PSP stick in there. Better still, you don't actually have to modify anything, the PSP stick just fits over the little nippleheh hehleft over snugly and tightly, and the lid will even still close as normal. 4U is the most beginner friendly game by far, and it's single player content is really well paced and presented imo. Even if the online won't be as active as Generations is at the moment, I think it's still a far better experience when it comes to learning how to play Monster Hunter. (Which is admittedly convoluted with all of the different kinds of items and statistics you need to learn.)
You can get it for less than 20 dollars these days, I recommend picking it up anyway and giving it a go. You probably won't regret it, and if you enjoy the game then you can pick up Generations later.

Use Aerial GL instead. Every full burst you let off after slamming out of the air basically pushes your heat gauge up just shy of a full colour, so after about three you can just wyvernfire and lock into red and go HAM.

If you haven't played FU online before, you've missed your chance at this point. Several years ago the community was still active on PS3 adhoc party, but it shrank once Portable 3rd came out and everyone migrated to that. I'm sure Gen and 4U have killed it even more.
You can play using something like MH Tunnel, but you'd have to find a community that still plays it online somewhere.
I remember using MHTunnel when /vg/ was first created to play Portable 3rd with /mhg/ before generals turned to shit, good times

Also guild bow is even more fun now that I've started using arrow swipes and backrolls, holy shit. Run in, do a swipe or two, backroll into a shot and power shot. Fun stuff.
They could totally expand on backrolls and swipes. Backroll to run in and swipe, backroll to load, forward and siderolls after a backhop, charging your arrow then swiping doing a charged doubleswipe, charging your swipe for half a second doing a little dash-in swipe...
Just imagine, if swipes became more viable and hop-rolls became more potent, bow would be so much more versatile, plus coatings would last longer in general due to swipes not consuming them.
Still waiting on arc shots not consuming coatings.
