Dear /v/, I need some advice, I plan on getting a new gpu but I can't decide which. I want to play recent games and games released in the next couple of years to run at 60 fps minimum on max settings. The question is what nvidia gpu should I get so it doesn't hit the bank and isn't overkill.

980Ti or 1070.

1070 my soul brother from another mother. Actually deciding which manufacturer to order from right now. It's not as banana sandwich as the 1080, but it should be a good improvement and stable card for the next few years.

>>345363583
That's too expensive for my budget ($300-$400).

Time to get that shiny i7, I guess.
should have gotten the unlocked version of the CPU

Then you don't get to play games at max settings and 60+ FPS

Yeah, I was thinking about upgrading my whole rig, but don't have the funds for it at the moment. The 1070 should last me for a while, and the next time I upgrade I'll just start from scratch.

>Async Compute gives another 20-25fps on top of the API

I would get an AMD GPU, because right now the 1070/1080 and eventual Ti or TITAN cards don't have hardware level Async Compute present as part of the architecture, and it's all handled at the software level.

All that said, the Nvidia GPUs are designed for brute force computing. Which may be fine for most games, but also bear in mind that AMD's GCN architecture is now up to version 4.0. Which means all previous, current, and future cards will age much better than Nvidia GPUs will until ACEs are added to their architecture (if ever that).

So my recommendation is to go AMD due to this. Finally, devs are beginning to leverage the technology console side, seen here: http://wccftech.com/async-compute-praised-by-several-devs-was-key-to-hitting-performance-target-in-doom-on-consoles/

And they're reporting that they're gaining anywhere from 3 to 5ms in latency reduction when rendering. This latency would be leveraged PC side, when the game is ported, if the game is programmed in the DX12 or Vulkan API.

The above link has devs from iD, Ubisoft, and an Independent developer all stating that they gained significant benefit from using the technology.

All that said, at the end of the day, make the decision that best fits you based on budget and interest.

All right, I'll pose the question differently, how long will a 960 hold up?
And how long will the 970 hold up?

A bunch of frames per second.
Ask google.

At the moment the R9 480X is your best bet, based on the video above.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXCYsFebIOE

^ Has 15 games rendered at Ultra settings at 1440p.

On average the card does between 32-60fps, with dips down in between. However, I imagine most gamers, perhaps yourself included, will game at 1080p. In which case, you should be able to hit 60+fps on ultra settings in all games current and upcoming.

At $230, it's price/performance is very good. In the future, you can pick up a second card for the same price, and with DX12 & Vulkan's explicit multi-adapter (basically the API sees multiple GPUs as one single unit with shared memory and shaders), for the games that do support it; you'll be able to get higher framerates and render resolutions for reasonable prices.

2xR9 480s are still less costly than a single GTX 1080. On top of that, the performance will improve over time as AMD writes better drivers.

Finally, if performance in future DX12 and Vulkan API titles is a complete mess, it will be less because the GPU or driver is bad and more because the developer is incompetent--as these APIs force responsibility more onto the developer to not be hacks (as they've asked for, in terms of low-level access).

Jesus, slow down there, AMD shill.

Isn't that the card that is burning out people mobos?

post your face when you realized the nvidia logo is a cameleon

>>345366565
Yes
Glad you can use google, which is more than most people
>>
>>345366775
I don't see it.
>>
>>345366565

It's not burning out motherboards. However, yes, there are many who are reporting that the card is drawing above the PCI-E spec for it's rating. Which can damage the motherboard.

Supposedly, there are some new drivers out that address this power issue that was occurring in the previous driver issue. So, if you do intend to buy it, do your due diligence in research before you spend the money.

I would still recommend it due to the ACEs, DX12/Vulkan benefits, and a longer-term card viability compared to nvidia at the cost.

Alternatively, you can wait till October, when the R9 490 is expected to release, which is a dual R9 480X GPU in one card solution.

Aka 4608 shaders w/ 16GB of GDDR5 (8GB per GPU effective).

>>345366829

People still arguing the cause of it? Last I read, it was mostly happening to people whose power supply wasn't beefy enough.

Too late, just bought http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487259

Thanks for the info though. I'm sure Pajeet will put the 200 rupees into your account, as stipulated by your contract.
>>
>>345367312

I don't care what card you buy. I said before, buy what you want based on budget and interest.

Don't be a douche.
>>
>>345366996
>People still arguing the cause of it?
Yea they are, but it seems the amount of juice drawn through the PCI-E slot by the card its self is the issue.
>>
>>345363583
R9 390 for maximum future proofing for that budget. only games you won't be able to keep 60fps stable all the time are Witcher 3 and GTAV and a few others.
>>
>>345364142
yup u shuda. my 4690k is OC to 4 and could be more than that. its a dank may may cpu

Which is the best aftermarket gpu manufacturer? performance-wise and consumer support-wise

there's not a card on the market that will do that other than maybe a GTX 1080 but that's a big big maybe
