Tough question. I think they are pretty equal, but for example I prefer Aoi to Akane (brown busty sporty muscle girl who eats a lot that survives at the end stereotype). But like, DR2 overall has better balance, DR1 just had Kirigiri who was doing everything for everyone and semi-useful Byakuya, while DR2 was pretty tight aside from Akane's "muh gut" and Soda existing.

The biggest problem I have with his death is how it was treated. Even if the character ended up being killed, the other characters would react to their death and you would get more backstory about them and why they played a part in the murder's plot. Not only did nobody react to his death, he was completely innocent in what happened to him. His death is treated like a joke where nobody cared and he doesn't get any vengeance from Mondo's death at all.
Other characters like Aoi got some nice development from Sakura's death, all i'm saying is why couldn't Ishimaru have done the same. His character feels completely wasted, especially when you put his backstory in perspective, it ends up feeling really cruel or heartless rather than sad or disheartening.
