>hardest
well there's a lot of things but if we're talking about the hardest it's obviously the PS2...
>>
>>345329145
The PS2 was a meme platform. It only sold like that thanks to the vulgar "FREE DVD PLAYER" gimmick.
>>
>>345329145
>it just keeps going
god damn
>>
>>345329145
What was the biggest factor? The DVD player thing? $200 pricetag?
>>
>>345329285
It also went dirt cheap, really fast. There were people buying PS2 even when the PS3 was out for the first 3-4 years, most 3rd world countries still have a PS2 only household.
>>
>>345329145

sonygger misinfo the gamecube sold way more than the ps2 could ever hope to have achieved
>>
Me.

*whips out dick*

Sega Consoles quickly became a joke after Sony stepped into the ring to give Nintendo actual competition without relying on mascots and banter.
But PS2 doubling as a DVD Player while being affordable in a short period of time quickly dominated that generation.
>>
>>345329585
>the Wii was just the gamecube with a different box, that THAT sonygger
filtered
>>
>>345329285
This. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say they still play PS2 today. Everyone I know still plays Gamecube.

I feel like Sega became a victim of their own marketing: They built they brand as being the 'cool' choice, but when they weren't the coolest kid around anymore... well, their fans abandoned them.
>>
>>345329804
I still play neither, but I still have a backlog on my PS2 if I were to ever go back to it

gamecube, not so much -- and I'm not the kind to forever play the same game ever after
>>
>>345328348
Lack of first party support, especially in america. Dreamcast had amazing 3rd party support, so much so that it has over 1000+ games even though it was only supported for 2-3 years.
People will say piracy is what killed it, or that playstation and xbox killed it, but it really boils down to lack of 1st party support.

Glad to see the industry hasn't changed all that much.

It was a combination of things first it was the sequel to the already successful PSone that was in many homes. it was a system that far surpassed what the PSone can do. DVD was a newish platform of watching movies and was still transitioning to take over the VHS and VCR market, so this was a cheap way to knock out two birds with one stone. getting the new playstation system and be able to watch those new fingled DVD discs. and much like the PSone lots of third parties jumped on board to release games for the PS2. it also tried to incorporate online play, which was something consoles didn't do before. im sure there is more but here is a small list of reasons
>>
>>345328348
The fact it was easy to pirate games by just burning them to CDs.
It's weird really, when the Saturn's anti-piracy measures have only just been cracked 20 years later.
>>
>>345330357
That's because the Saturn is a retardedly complex system.
>>
>>345329145

The PS2 is right.
People just looked at the Dreamcast and said "Well why should I buy this when I can wait a year to play more games, DVDs and ports)
>>
>>345330450
That's true, but also apparently the discs were all burned with an anti-piracy strip that is read at the same time as the game. You can't just burn saturn CDs and have them work like you could with DC games. You need to hardware mod.
>>
>>345330352
Genesis and saturn both had online, and so did dreamcast. To this day, there is still dremacast servers up for PSO and quake 3.
You dont know what youre talking about you underage nerd
>>
>>345328348
I don't know if anything one thing hit it particularly hard. It was more of a death by a thousand cuts sort of thing. I guess it's a toss up between Sega screwing over the consumer too many times with peripherals and the Saturn, and the PS2 being more powerful having DVD support, and Sony's marketing campaign apparently ripped the Dreamcast a new one.
>>
>>345329285
>>345329529
>>345329484
Yeah, let's completely undermine the fact that it had an amazing library of games too.
>>
>>345330628
if I were to guess, it was likely rushed out

like during development no one bothered with this shit as it just gets in the way

then they released it while never addressing the issue
>>
>>345328348
My man Rocco going hard as usual
>>
>>345328348
The Sega CD, 32X, and then the Saturn.

The Genesis also having way too many consoles fucked it up.
>>
>>345330725
Yeah, a sea of shovelware sure is "an amazing library"
>>
No good games. That piece of shit is even worse than the WiiU in that regard.
>>
>>345329145
In general the PS2 was a very attractive console to third world countires due to its lower price and ability to pirate games
>>
>>345331046
It also had a lot of good first party stuff and was the go to for third party stuff since Nintendo was difficult to deal with and Dreamcast was dead in the water.

PS2 has a better and more varied single player library than the Gamecube and while there was a lot of shovelware, it's not like that matters since you can just ignore it.
>>
>>345328348
>Poor release schedule, development hell, coupled with the fact they didn't really release any of their core games apart from sonic adventure and echo which were terrible
>Bernie stolar, the man who unironically didn't know about his own Streets of Rage franchise and said dreamcast was not the 'future"

There's more but you get the idea.

Man, I've been looking to download this game everywhere on xbox live. I guess i'll just have to use the rom on that shitty reicast emulator.

>>

It works fine on Demul. You can easily get a rom off TOSEC's dreamcast dump.
>>
>>345331046
>trying this hard

No one thinks you're cool faggot. The PS2 had one of the most quality selection of games of any console and if you disagree, you're either underaged or a tryhard faggot.
>>
>>345328348
No dvd player.
>>
>>345328348
In my opinion. The feud between Sega of America and Sega of Japan.
They just couldn't get along and instead of co-operating, they would just constantly fight each other, and make deals and decisions behind each other's backs.

Having both the 32X and the Saturn was a mistake. Should have focused on one solid 3D platform but instead we have one pointless device and one half-baked, difficult to program for, 2D specialised device.

Burned a ton of bridges there. Both underwhelmed massively. No main Sonic game was a mistake.

Dreamcast was pretty successful but the damage had already been done.
>>
>>345331590
Cool, thx anon.
I hate the bios file setup on reicast.
>>
>>345330753
One of the theories is that Sega was mostly finished with their next 2D console when they found out everyone else was gearing up for 3D, so they slapped on a second CPU to help with 3D and pushed it out the door.
>>
>>345332409

I honestly had no idea the Dreamcast existed when I was a kid.

I think I genuinely first saw it exists on /v/.
>>
That sonic adventure battle disc glitch fucked them up a bit.
Any if you guys had to replace your disc?
>>
>No DVD support
>PS2 destroyed the fuck out of it in sales
>Can basically read backups with no modding whatsoever, leading to piracy all over the place

Pretty much all of that.
>>
>>345328348
That game was fun as shit

The fuckoff huge German guy was fun
>>
>>345329804
And everybody I know has fond memories of PS2, but only one person, a friend of mine who played on my Gamecube, still cares about it. Even then, it's only Metroid Prime, and not SSBM or ToS that we all played together.
>>
>>345334294
>legendary but forgotten Gamecube games
Burnout 3: Takedown
Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters
Resident Evil
Star Wars Rogue Squadron
Metroid Prime (no nunchuk bullshit)
>>
>>345334798
Takedown wasn't on gamecube.
>>
>>345335303
>takedown wasn't on Gamecube
Legends then.
>>
>>345334798
Rogue Squadron isn't forgotten.

Even if the N64 original is up and away the best.
>>
>>345335667
Try again.
>>
>>345336089
Shit IDK, I had 4 consoles at the time plus a pc. Burnout 1 & 2 were legendary for their time.
>>
>>345328348
The Saturn.

Any other explanation is wrong.
>>
>>345336405
1 and 2 were on GC. 1 was nothing to crow about. I haven't played 2.
>>
>>345328348
Don't care about the Dreamcast, but I'd fuck that ginger hunk all night long.
>>
The Dreamcast became a gimmick console.

The thing about the Dreamcast is that theoretically you could use it to play games online and connect to the internet. The problem is that it did both of these things rather poorly. It can't be helped, it came out in 1998 for fuck's sake. Do you remember what using the internet was like back then? Now try to imagine that but on an underpowered console.

Honestly, it's like a nightmare version of VR now. The Dreamcast had a gimmick it couldn't even do properly, coupled with almost no games at launch and how easy it was to pirate games later meant there was very few reasons to get a Dreamcast beyond "Another Sonic game, maybe."

It's a bit of a shame though. If it worked, the Dreamcast would of been amazing but I guess it was a bit before its time. The technology for online play, GOOD online play wasn't really there yet. Not to mention the Dreamcast had good games like Crazy Taxi.
>>
>>345331807

I'd go so far as to say the PS2 still has the best selection of games yet.
There's a reason so many games got HD remasters from it to PS3 and even PS4.
