Kirby's anime had this exact same problem. Too much focus on OC's no one asked for and even worse, Sakurai made it so that Kirby COULDN'T be focused on by making him an infant and incapable of speech. It's a fucking shame, because Dedede and Escargon are the better characters in the show, especially Escargon. He doesn't take away Dedede's spotlight unlike those two kids. Kirby could easily be their foil.

The games have no reason for him to talk, but in Crystal Shards, you can argue that he knows full well what's going on and takes a stand similar to say, Mario. The anime makes him incapable of knowing what's around him and flanderizes him into a mindless glutton who has to be told what to do.
Hell, he got kissed in the anime and looked clueless compared to Crystal Shards where he blushed and danced.

Kirby not talking could easily pass since nobody else talked in the games either besides rather specific cases, and in those Kirby seems more like your typical silent protagonist instead of a squeaking baby. Thankfully even the newer games kind of cut back on the voices for Kirby himself, letting him have some of his old identity back.
