I wasn't the only one who exclusively used my starter righter.
Sapphire was just sceptile and fire red was just charizard.
My yellow run had me break that rule, pickchu was pretty trash and lt. surge was impossible. From that run I learned hoe overpowered dugtrio was in gen 1, slash and earthquake would slaughter everything. Pikachu, and later articuno, were barely used since dugtrio would just kill everything.

Serperior is the only one that isn't ugly as sin, but it's also the worst one to use.
There are perfectly servicable replacements in-game. Lilligant, Seismitoad and Darmanitan all exist for a reason.

As a kid I only used my starter. But I learned that's not the best way to go.
Gary/Blue knocked out my Blastoise with his Venasaur. I was lucky to have had a pidgeotto with quick attack to snipe its last bit of health.
Ever since then I've made sure to keep at least 3 pokes around the same level.
