SNK went bankrupt in 2000, Eolith stepped in to finish the NESTS saga while SNK restructured with Playmore to become SNK Playmore.
Granted, Playmore was essentially a dummy corporation started by the same founder as SNK since he knew SNK was a sinking ship and wanted to preserve his assets--so it could be considered the same company in that sense. But practically none of the original talent stuck around. Most of them left to start ArcSys.
Vanilla 2002 is the best one though.
The problem with SNK as we know them today is that they carry a huge sense of Japanese elitism. They figure that if their products are good enough to work right in Japan, they're good enough to work anywhere else. This fails to take into account how small of a land mass Japan is compared to their other markets (and how much better their internet is, let's be real here), so we end up with these fighting games--which, thanks to SF4, are successful based entirely on how good their online is--that are virtually unplayable because of shitty netcode.
