Too bad the Tenchu series died out after Tenchu Z. What a fuckup that was.

All they had to do was remake, and expand upon Wrath of Heaven / Return from Darkness.

But you know what I'd really kill for? A game that's like a fusion of Tenchu and GTA.

Thief 1 and 3 (with mods) is better than 2 (but 2 is probably a better stealth game, Thief has better spooky than stealth though).

Although, I would prefer Contracts over BM (despite the fact that BM is objectively better) and Thief 1 over second (despite, again, second being superior. The Sneaky Upgrade mod pack for 3, that includes T3 Gold and Minimalist Project as well as a bunch of other smaller mods makes Deadly Shadows into a legit fun game.

I don't know if you'd call it a better stealth game or not, but I thought it was a better game overall aside from smaller levels.

I will say that I value exploration and good spooky atmosphere in Thief more than pure stealth though. If you only play Thief for stealth you will probably still like 2 better. 2 just doesn't have enough weird architecture for me, it's more about robbing regular places. Though the second half where you visit the forests and mechanist hidden bases was fucking awesome though.

I like Chaos Theory but I'd probably put pretty much any MGS up there over it. Not necessarily because Thief 2 and Blood Money are better games, but more because Splinter Cell feels like it derives from MGS while Thief and Hitman have their distinct styles.

To be honest, that nonsense aside, Ground Demoes was SO much better than MGS5 it wasn't even funny. If the whole MGS5 had just done away with fulton shit and been 12 missions as good as GZ, it would have been worth every penny.

They would have needed to tighten up the stealth mechanics though. Some of the enemy sight stuff is bullshit.

They are doing a LOT more than almost every other episodic release to keep it fresh though. They really want you replaying these levels to milk everything out of them. And the pacing of release does kinda support that.

Sneakan Cell Blacklist is pretty good. Conviction wasn't bad either except that it was more of a stealth shooter.

Absolution as well, though you're rated horribly for playing it as a shooter and the stealth is so ball-crushingly hard I am almost certain they didn't design it for Hard-Expert-Purist level play just for how much of a pain in the ass it is to sneak anywhere.

Despite all that, you're a dope if you skip any of those, their weaknesses aside.

Tenchu Z had the best level design and stealth mechanics in the franchise, bar none. A LOT of effort went into that.

Of course they sapped every bit of fun from it: The music is gone. Only two bosses. Reused everything...

Fatal Shadows, which came before it, was a game almost entirely made of incredibly tightly packed levels and halls. Ghosting Absolution is somehow less frustrating than that stealthy shitfest. I loved it all the same but fuck it to hell.

The Wii/PSP Tenchu game?... Eh... it was about a fraction of a good game idea. I WANTED to like it so bad. But I couldn't. What a fucking mess.

Also killing off Ayame is illegal.

The Ship is social stealth.

Sneakan Cell Chaos Theory, Double Agent, Conviction, and Blacklist all had various forms of MP, bro-op and vs. High end play on those was kinda degenerate and closer to deathmatch than real stealth.

I'll eat my hat if ThieveryUT is still alive, but it was guards vs thieves Thief-themed mod for UT99. Still kinda corny but it did some things right. Playable solo if you just wanted to fight the AI guards, but you may as well get The Dark Mod if you want amateurish Thief mods or just get good T2 mods if you like that sort of thing.
