The gunplay is atrocious, the weapons don't procude a satisfying kick or to a minima visual recoil, and the shitty ass static rotating muzzleflashes (Fallout 4 tier) kills any kind of attempt at realism or authenticity. Bloodsuckers are mutant creatures with a very tough hide. An auto shotgun or explosives are recommended.

But yeah, vanilla STALKER doesn't have realistic damage. A headshot will kill most human characters out right but they will tank shots to the chest. STASLKER with a realistic damage mod is pretty great though.

And you're still better off using the 2x Red Dot, because the objectives are often very close and whilst you're trying to find the next enemy to shoot with a long range scope they can just hop towards you or shoot you from the the other objective point without a real problem.
There's little to no usage for long range scopes in the game, which is a shame, in my opinion.
Half the time you'll be in situations like pic related because all of your teammates have run off somewhere and died, so you have to secure the open spot even though you previously were trying to hold off the long distance.

I'm actually playing Stalker for the first time right now. Unless I'm understanding things incorrectly, there's a built in dice roll on shots that causes them to just vanish sometimes, presumably as part of the accuracy stat on guns. It's the only explanation I've seen for all the times I've fired a shot that couldn't possibly miss doing no damage. The gun physics might be realistically modeled otherwise, but that doesn't really mean much when your skill is being artificially curbed.

I still like the game, and I'm at a point where the issue is much less noticeable, but it's still mildly irritating.

inb4 "low crouch and iron sight". The misses will still happen. If the solution is to mod, then the game itself isn't what has the good gunplay, it's the mod.

Well that's a very close quarters map, there's no point using a big scope there. The role of a sniper/designated marksman is to take out important targets like MGs and other snipers. Most of the shooting in the game is against other people. If you shoot people in the head on Master difficulty, they die. Bloodsuckers are a huge outlier in terms of damage they can survive. And if you pull off a lucky shot, they will go down anyway.

I actually wanted to try out a long range scope in that map and it just didn't feel much different from using the 2X Red Dot considering how many obstacles there are in in the center. And if the enemy gets on the right side, you pretty much can't do anything there as a sniper since it's just building upon building.
Problem with being an anti-sniper or even MG is that often a lot their team's marksmen also run off somewhere else.
Also, another problem that's very common for the sniper class is if you try and sit in windows or next to a wall then you're pretty much guaranteed to get fucked by an RPG at some point.

Ro1's gunplay is MEATY. It feels way more meaty and loud and intense than RO2.

Flamers in comparison take very little practice. You use smoke, flank the enemy, and many times you will easily get 5 kills per life.

Also I pick up every damn American weapon I see when I am Japanese and I find myself killing a lot more enemies.

At least sometimes during primetime hours a bunch of regular Jap players come on and absolutely wreck the american team with good teamwork.

But I never see Russia win in primetime hours, EVER. If you go on Russia you are begging to lose.

I will now and always believe Day of Defeat Source has the best gunplay I've ever seen.

The weapons feel so satisfying to use and their uses are so perfectly balanced in a rock paper scissors style.

It's pretty much pick two of accuracy, power, mobility.

The servers were always great communities too and there were so many amazing custom maps.

Too bad Valve doesn't care about it anymore.

Too bad we'll never get a promised Day of Defeat 3.

I also miss some of the weapons from the original too.

They really aren't.

The Krauts get better the MG34 and 42 which are just better than the DP, and they get the MKB which is probably the best gun in the game. But on the other hand the Slavs get the PPSh and SVT, which are quite a bit better than the MP40 and G41. The T-34 is also miles better than the PzIV. The game is pretty well balanced asymetrically.

Slavs just lose most of the time because the long time players from the original RO are mostly wehraboos, and the people that only play Russians are kiddos who say Enemy at the Gates and CoD WaW.

Mines rarely work and most of the time your team forgets to even plant them. Type 89'ers are no better than Thompson, the thompson is definitely better, also Americans get the fucking BAR.

Banzai charges work only with tons of organization. American's don't nearly need as much micromanaging from TLs to succeed.
