Starcraft:
>game built solely on micromanagement and mobile-game tier Eco management
>almost no base holding
>like 12 units for each of its 3 factions
>two game stages which I'll call "Zerg-rush" followed by "megalith spam"
>games rarely run over fifteen minutes
It was impressive for its time but it lacks the depth and complexity of a true rts

Supcom Forged Alliance:
Units:
>Over 100 different units across four factions
>four tiers of navy, land, and air all of which stay in play in different stages of the game
>air units have finite fuel supplies and must land to refuel at refueling station
>incredible diversity of units even within factions
>almost every unit is unique allowing dozens of different strategies to do anything preventing a meta
Economy:
>two different resources, one you can generate but one you must harvest from the map encouraging map control
>dead units/buildings can be harvested for resources as well as rocks and trees etc. across the map
>When either resource stalls you suffer a different penalty
>if you stop production of something or an upgrade of something all resources sunk into it are lost forcing you to actually think about what you're doing
Strategy
>four tiers of units (t1, t2, t3, and experimental)
>land units all posses different abilities (cloak, radar jamming, hover, amphibious, submersible, etc. )
>units trade health for firepower/range/speed/etc. so no two are the same
>air transports so your land units don't have to walk everywhere, but units may die as transport takes damage
>land units win wars but air units (bombers, gunships, giant laser UFO's) can provide support/weaken defenses/ take out key targets like enemy eco
>mid-late game shields to protect your base/fire basses/AA-battery's/ anything else you have, cut they're expensive to maintain and once they go down it takes a long time to go back up
>three tiers of PD/AA towers which vary greatly across factions
How is SC better again?

When the creators gave up the community took over. It's a rebalance mod, a bug fixing mod, a multiplayer mod, and they host the servers we play on. It's very active and apart from occasional connectivity problems it's great to have a game hosted by its own community.

The cybran in vanilla supreme commander had a timer, if you couldn't cripple your enemies before the got significantly into T2, or your rushed monkeylord didn't murder the fuck of them, you basically lost the game. Your units were made of paper

with FA and FAF, it's still there, your units are tissue paper, but you have a lot of bullshit to make up for it, on top of everything costing less. Not to mention teleport/mazer coms for that personal, commander on commander fuck you.

FA has too much. There's nothing stopping ACU-T2 rush for an early turret turtle; and good luck figuring out how to match a skilled opponent's economy. It's not obvious if it's just overall advancement order per resource availability, but winning a game because you produced 5 engineers instead of 4 at the start of the game seems a bit ludicrous. It's obviously a MOBA snowball setup, and that's not really strategy. It's just learning exactly how many factories a map allows.

"Bricks, the better Percival"
>>345218015
just the opposite actually, the diversity allows you to deal with all of that. That t2 acu won't fair too well against few cloud of mercies. Those early engi's wont snowball if they're taken out by a t1 bomber/light assault bot in the first two minutes. His awesome Eco will go off like fireworks if you can sneak a tac-missle past his defenses
>>
>>345211945
starcraft games frequently run way longer than 15 minutes unless you're at the amateur level where everybody just rushes because idiots don't know how to defend it

also

chess:
>game built entirely around build orders with only 64 possible squares
>almost no base holding
>like ten units for two identical factions
>two game stages which i'll call "pawn push" followed by "queen spam"

meanwhile

go:
>etc.

you're comparing two completely different approaches and acting like one is inherently worse. a relatively limited design philosophy isn't necessarily a bad thing and can still lead to high level play with a lot of variation. more doesn't necessarily mean better. limits can be interesting in and of themselves.

>>
>>345219241
yeah, and that's fine. people have different preferences. there are things that are objectively better or objectively worse, but i don't think design complexity is one of those things, at least not on its own.

>just the opposite actually, the diversity allows you to deal with all of that.
Except it doesn't: early specialization is of such variety, preparing for all of it (including checking his base, micro'ing units) while simultaneously trying to keep up an economy isn't feasible. Maybe there are tells beyond experience suggesting when it's OK to make more factories, but it's such a tight line that stalling or underproducing and getting the base shagged is the impromptu magnum opus of how awful the learning curve is.

AA is so simple that early bombers are completely impractical.
>>
>>345216785

All you're photos are from supcom 2 for some reason. My usual build for 1v1 is airfactory + 3 pgens, then I build 2 engies and an air scout. This way I can scout his base to see if he's ecowhoring in which case t1 bomber or otherwise I just use it mass produce engi's. It's true that how you start can affect the whole game in 1v1's between pros but in the vast majorities of games where it's 6v6 on some giant map it's almost irrelevant
