Buy the HD collection. Start with the original. The series really starts to get good with Going Commando, the second game.

The collection has some bugs but it's still the best way to experience the series. If you like it buy Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time. If you liked the Arena gameplay in Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal you can buy Deadlocked.
Into the Nexus is more like Insomniac's farewell letter to the PS3 and if you manage to like the series enough after all that, go buy it. It's shorter than the rest of the games though.

Even with the digital version? I bought physical Nexus when it came out, but I didn't need the code since I already had Booty. I remember finishing Booty 100% in one sitting.
But A4O is terrible even with people to play. They drag your camera that you already can't control, you're forced to compete for bolts just so you can actually have decent guns which means once person will always come up short by 10-20k bolts a level which is an entire upgrade, and the levels themselves really aren't that fun.
Gonna get the HD collection on Vita. Been waiting for a long time. Only ever played up your arsenal.

Most people would say Crack in Time. ToD is good though and if you're a fan you'll enjoy Nexus.
Reminder not to pay for Deadlocked HD even at that cheap of a price. It's an almost completely broken port prone to crashing constantly, extreme framedrops(Robot graveyard dropped to sub 10 for me and it just barely runs at 20's at times), every single cutscene has animation stutters where the characters slowly jut into positions every half a second which makes watching them a pain, and stuff like this is literally in the second or third cutscene of the game and happens once more on the big bad's cutscene like one or two scenes later.
I got it for free with FFA and I still regret it.

They were the worst in Robot Graveyard where I was sure the game would crash every time I ran through it with how bad it was running, the one giant ice area is pretty bad, and any match located in the main area(Especially the barrier one with the Tyhrranoids you use to grind out weapons) were pretty much 15 with drops.

It can have technical problems but still be playable. You can complete the entire game, it's just painful to do it.
I personally had either two or three crashes. One was in the Robot Graveyard due to two of the robots exploding while I was doing a jump and several more were spawning, and I know at least another one was in the ice arena while it was trying to start a cutscene.
Could just be me, but I had nothing but problems with the HD version and just couldn't believe people paid $20 for it at one point.

Depends what you want. Vita gives you portability but L2/R2 are bound to the back touch screen and from what I understand it also has some more gltiches that weren't present in the PS3 version on top of some framedrops in I think 1.
