I loved XIII and XIII-2. They're as good as if not better than 8, 9 and 12.
7 and 10 are the only real outstanding games in the series although all the games are very good.
Haven't really gotten into lightning returns yet.
I've completed every other game in the series though. Even spent 4 months playing XIV. Have up at Titan because you couldn't really PuG him at that time anyway. Not sure about now

I'm 30 and played 7 when i was 12. Have played them all since then at release. replay 8 and 9 they're actually pretty bad. Versus was waiting for the engine to be fixed while a small team was doing pre-production but in 2008 they decided to build a new custom engine from scratch build only for Versus.
in in late 2008-early 2009 XIII was missing all its deadlines and crystal tools was still complete shit of an engine, Versus xiii team went into the XIII team and helped complete the game which released in december of 2009.
Then in 2010 XIV completely bombed and needed an overhaul, not only the FFversusxIII but the XIII team went into the XIV team to rebuild it from scratch.
Then when it was time for fucking Versus to shine and get a proper fucking team to develop it they decided to move it to next gen.
So stop spouting shit already. The game never went into proper developmet because Square Enix is FUCKING SHIT.

Have you played FFVI-IX or FFXII? It's like that. You follow a linear story. If there's no setpiece happening right now, you can take a break, explore, do sidequests etc. Once you are done, you can return to the story stuff and move on.

What ultimately matters is how enjoyable the game is.
Look at the Metal Gear Solid V example.
80% of what you do in that game is stealth/action infiltration missions. That part of the game is fucking fantastic. Its super enjoyable and great in every conceivable category.
Another 10% of that game is the Motherbase element- Which I personally find to be a compelling gameplay loop to achieve unlocks. It feeds both ways into the game, giving you new abilities for infiltration, while also requiring you to make risks during infiltration to unlock more tools.
The final 10% of the story is the story. The cutscenes of this story is great, and some of the cassette tapes are really good, but the story never comes together, feels unfinished, has a lot of filler, and is ultimately disappointing and anticlimactic.
So in the end, we have a game that is awesome and incredible 80% of the time you are playing it, and if you like the motherbase system, then it is a game that is awesome and incredible 90% of the time you are playing it.
Is a game that is consistently awesome and incredible like that not worthy of being called an awesome and incredible game? Does something really have to be awesome and incredible 100% of the time to be considered truly awesome and incredible? See what I mean? Loosen the elitist attitude, allow yourself to enjoy and be happy with games that are amazing 80% of the time you are playing them and you will love video games again instead of being cynical and hating them.

Enemies bleed in Duscae, Noctis bleeds if he's strongly hit and gets cuts, bruises, burns etc. in Platinum, Kingsglaive trailers showed blood-spattered Regis and Behemoth getting his throat slit with a ton of blood, first episode of anime had Noctis dying in a pool of blood and so on.
It's not as over the top as in God of War, but it's more than any FF had except for Type-0.
