You can't buy battle items like pots and revives from the cash shop. Everything in the cash shop other than pokeballs is either an upgrade or a booster iterm. You only use pots and revives if you care about gym battles which is demonstrably p2w.

Gym dominance has nothing to do with skill and everything to do with joining the right team and/or living in an area with lots of gyms that are almost never contested. The little skill involved in gym battles only helps you attack gyms, defending them is entirely dependent on the CP of you and your team's pokemon since you have no control of them in battles when defending.
Also the payout for holding gyms is pathetic, only 10 coins for each gym you hold. And you can only cash out every 21 hours regardless of how many gyms you hold. Good luck holding TEN (10) gyms at the same time just to earn the equivalent of $1. I doubt most people playing are in more than 2 or 3 gyms.
