I guess what they were trying to do was riding the momentum of the FIFA World Cup 2002 (Korea/Japan). The whole world had its eyes on Japan at the time. You could have swapped out Puffy with any other girl band, really, and it would have been the same show. And yes, the aforementioned parody of Duel Monsters really did annoy me that much, not even because of my interest in Yugioh, but because the gags weren't even that well done, given the amount of shit you can make fun of with Yugioh, e.g., the constant cheating in the first arc and the obvious pay2win joke since it's a bunch of kids playing against adults with jobs half of the time.
