Well, only if you count the dungeon and boss fight on both ends of the desert as well. The actual desert area kind of sucked aside from the music.

I think there's latency but it's more that you can't "control" your steering like an analog stick could, it goes one way or another on full so you gotta be careful. That said it's still fun.

Altepa? Not really, the thing that makes the area amazing are the interconnections with Quicksand Caves and Rabao for the comfy oasis town.
Other than that, it's easily topped by Thanalan
Deserts of Kharak. Namely because they have more than just one color of sand and the terrain varies.

Altepa actually feels like a desert, whereas most of Thanalan, baring parts of South Than, feels too enclosed, small, or fake. The Sagolii Desert, for instance, reminds me of The Great Sand Dunes more than an extension of a actual desert.
the best thing about Deserts are Desert townsstill doesn't hold a candle compared to MH2's Dundorma but I really miss having actual cities for guild quests
